Deuteronomy 8
1 All the commandment which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which Jehovah sware unto your fathers.
Vous observerez et mettrez en pratique tous les commandements que je vous prescris aujourd'hui, afin que vous viviez, que vous multipliiez, que vous entriez dans le pays que l'Éternel a juré à vos pères et que vous le possédiez.
2 And thou shalt remember all the way which Jehovah thy God hath led thee these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble thee, to prove thee, to know what was in thy heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or not.
Tu te souviendras de tout le chemin que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, t'a fait faire pendant ces quarante années dans le désert, afin de t'humilier, de t'éprouver, de savoir ce que tu avais dans le cœur, si tu garderais ou non ses commandements.
3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by everything that proceedeth out of the mouth of Jehovah doth man live.
Il t'a humilié, t'a laissé avoir faim et t'a nourri de la manne, que tu ne connaissais pas et que tes pères ne connaissaient pas, afin de t'apprendre que l'homme ne vit pas seulement de pain, mais que l'homme vit de toute parole qui sort de la bouche de Yahvé.
4 Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.
Ton vêtement n'a pas vieilli sur toi, et ton pied n'a pas enflé, pendant ces quarante années.
5 And thou shalt consider in thy heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so Jehovah thy God chasteneth thee.
Tu considéreras dans ton cœur que, comme un homme discipline son fils, ainsi Yahvé ton Dieu te discipline.
6 And thou shalt keep the commandments of Jehovah thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.
Tu observeras les commandements de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, pour marcher dans ses voies et pour le craindre.
7 For Jehovah thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills;
Car l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te fait entrer dans un bon pays, un pays de ruisseaux d'eau, de sources et d'eaux souterraines qui coulent dans les vallées et les collines;
8 a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig-trees and pomegranates; a land of olive-trees and honey;
un pays de blé, d'orge, de vignes, de figuiers et de grenadiers, un pays d'oliviers et de miel;
9 a land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack anything in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig copper.
un pays où tu mangeras du pain sans manquer, où tu ne manqueras de rien; un pays dont les pierres sont du fer, et dans les collines duquel on peut extraire du cuivre.
10 And thou shalt eat and be full, and thou shalt bless Jehovah thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.
Tu mangeras et tu te rassasieras, et tu béniras Yahvé ton Dieu pour le bon pays qu'il t'a donné.
11 Beware lest thou forget Jehovah thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his ordinances, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:
Prends garde que tu n'oublies Yahvé, ton Dieu, en n'observant pas ses commandements, ses ordonnances et ses lois, que je te prescris aujourd'hui;
12 lest, when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;
de peur que, lorsque tu auras mangé et que tu seras rassasié, lorsque tu auras bâti de belles maisons et que tu y auras habité,
13 and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;
lorsque tes troupeaux se seront multipliés, que ton argent et ton or se seront multipliés, et que tout ce que tu possèdes se sera multiplié,
14 then thy heart be lifted up, and thou forget Jehovah thy God, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage;
ton cœur ne s'élève et tu n'oublies Yahvé, ton Dieu, qui t'a fait sortir du pays d'Égypte, de la maison de servitude;
15 who led thee through the great and terrible wilderness, [wherein were] fiery serpents and scorpions, and thirsty ground where was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;
qui t'a conduit à travers un désert grand et terrible, avec des serpents venimeux et des scorpions, et une terre assoiffée où il n'y avait pas d'eau; qui t'a fait couler de l'eau du rocher de silex;
16 who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not; that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end:
qui t'a nourri dans le désert de la manne que tes pères ne connaissaient pas, afin de t'humilier et de t'éprouver, pour te faire du bien à la fin de ta vie;
17 and [lest] thou say in thy heart, My power and the might of my hand hath gotten me this wealth.
et de peur que tu ne dises dans ton cœur: « C'est ma puissance et la force de ma main qui m'ont procuré ces richesses ». »
18 But thou shalt remember Jehovah thy God, for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth; that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as at this day.
Mais toi, tu te souviendras de Yahvé ton Dieu, car c'est lui qui te donne le pouvoir d'acquérir des richesses, afin d'établir son alliance, qu'il a jurée à tes pères, comme elle l'est aujourd'hui.
19 And it shall be, if thou shalt forget Jehovah thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.
Si tu oublies l'Éternel, ton Dieu, et si tu vas après d'autres dieux, si tu les sers et te prosternes devant eux, je témoigne aujourd'hui contre toi que tu périras.
20 As the nations that Jehovah maketh to perish before you, so shall ye perish; because ye would not hearken unto the voice of Jehovah your God.
Comme les nations que l'Éternel fait périr devant vous, ainsi vous périrez, parce que vous n'avez pas voulu écouter la voix de l'Éternel, votre Dieu.
