Matthew 14
1 At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Jesus,
Κατ' εκείνον τον καιρόν ήκουσεν Ηρώδης ο τετράρχης την φήμην του Ιησού
2 and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptizer. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him.”
και είπε προς τους δούλους αυτού· Ούτος είναι Ιωάννης ο Βαπτιστής· αυτός ηγέρθη από των νεκρών, και διά τούτο ενεργούσιν αι δυνάμεις εν αυτώ.
3 For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.
Διότι ο Ηρώδης συλλαβών τον Ιωάννην έδεσεν αυτόν και έβαλεν εν φυλακή διά Ηρωδιάδα την γυναίκα Φιλίππου του αδελφού αυτού.
4 For John said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
Διότι έλεγε προς αυτόν ο Ιωάννης· Δεν σοι είναι συγκεχωρημένον να έχης αυτήν.
5 When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
Και θέλων να θανατώση αυτόν εφοβήθη τον όχλον, διότι είχον αυτόν ως προφήτην.
6 But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced among them and pleased Herod.
Ότε δε ετελούντο τα γενέθλια του Ηρώδου, εχόρευσεν η θυγάτηρ της Ηρωδιάδος εν τω μέσω και ήρεσεν εις τον Ηρώδην·
7 Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask.
όθεν μεθ' όρκου ώμολόγησεν εις αυτήν να δώση ό, τι αν ζητήση.
8 She, being prompted by her mother, said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptizer.”
Η δε, παρακινηθείσα υπό της μητρός αυτής, Δος μοι, λέγει, εδώ επί πίνακι την κεφαλήν Ιωάννου του Βαπτιστού.
9 The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given,
Και ελυπήθη ο βασιλεύς, διά τους όρκους όμως και τους συγκαθημένους προσέταξε να δοθή,
10 and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.
και πέμψας απεκεφάλισε τον Ιωάννην εν τη φυλακή.
11 His head was brought on a platter and given to the young lady; and she brought it to her mother.
Και εφέρθη η κεφαλή αυτού επί πίνακι και εδόθη εις το κοράσιον, και έφερεν αυτήν προς την μητέρα αυτής.
12 His disciples came, took the body, and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
Και προσελθόντες οι μαθηταί αυτού εσήκωσαν το σώμα και έθαψαν αυτό, και ελθόντες απήγγειλαν τούτο εις τον Ιησούν.
13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place apart. When the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities.
Και ακούσας ο Ιησούς ανεχώρησεν εκείθεν εν πλοίω εις έρημον τόπον κατ' ιδίαν· και ακούσαντες οι όχλοι ηκολούθησαν αυτόν πεζοί από των πόλεων.
14 Jesus went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them and healed their sick.
Και ότε ο Ιησούς, είδε πολύν όχλον και εσπλαγχνίσθη δι' αυτούς και εθεράπευσε τους αρρώστους αυτών.
15 When evening had come, his disciples came to him, saying, “This place is deserted, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food.”
Ότε δε έγεινεν εσπέρα, προσήλθον προς αυτόν οι μαθηταί αυτού, λέγοντες· Έρημος είναι ο τόπος και η ώρα ήδη παρήλθεν· απόλυσον τους όχλους, διά να υπάγωσιν εις τας κώμας και αγοράσωσιν εις εαυτούς τροφάς.
16 But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
Ο δε Ιησούς είπε προς αυτούς· Δεν έχουσι χρείαν να υπάγωσι· δότε εις αυτούς σεις να φάγωσιν.
17 They told him, “We only have here five loaves and two fish.”
Οι δε λέγουσι προς αυτόν· Δεν έχομεν εδώ ειμή πέντε άρτους και δύο οψάρια.
18 He said, “Bring them here to me.”
Ο δε είπε· Φέρετέ μοι αυτά εδώ.
19 He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.
Και προστάξας τους όχλους να καθήσωσιν επί τα χόρτα, και λαβών τους πέντε άρτους και τα δύο οψάρια, αναβλέψας εις τον ουρανόν ευλόγησε, και κόψας έδωκεν εις τους μαθητάς τους άρτους, οι δε μαθηταί εις τους όχλους.
20 They all ate and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces.
Και έφαγον πάντες και εχορτάσθησαν, και εσήκωσαν το περίσσευμα των κλασμάτων, δώδεκα κοφίνους πλήρεις.
21 Those who ate were about five thousand men, in addition to women and children.
οι δε τρώγοντες ήσαν έως πεντακισχίλιοι άνδρες, εκτός γυναικών και παιδίων.
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
Και ευθύς ηνάγκασεν ο Ιησούς τους μαθητάς αυτού να εμβώσιν εις το πλοίον και να υπάγωσι προ αυτού εις το πέραν, εωσού απολύση τους όχλους.
23 After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.
Και αφού απέλυσε τους όχλους, ανέβη εις το όρος κατ' ιδίαν διά να προσευχηθή. Και ότε έγεινεν εσπέρα, ήτο μόνος εκεί.
24 But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
Το δε πλοίον ήτο ήδη εν τω μέσω της θαλάσσης, βασανιζόμενον υπό των κυμάτων· διότι ήτο εναντίος ο άνεμος.
25 In the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.
Εν δε τη τετάρτη φυλακή της νυκτός υπήγε προς αυτούς ο Ιησούς, περιπατών επί την θάλασσαν.
26 When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It’s a ghost!” and they cried out for fear.
Και ιδόντες αυτόν οι μαθηταί επί την θάλασσαν περιπατούντα, εταράχθησαν, λέγοντες ότι φάντασμα είναι, και από του φόβου έκραξαν.
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up! It is I! Do not be afraid.”
Ευθύς δε ελάλησε προς αυτούς ο Ιησούς λέγων· Θαρσείτε, εγώ είμαι· μη φοβείσθε.
28 Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.”
Αποκριθείς δε προς αυτόν ο Πέτρος είπε· Κύριε, εάν ήσαι συ, πρόσταξόν με να έλθω προς σε επί τα ύδατα.
29 He said, “Come!” Peter stepped down from the boat and walked on the waters to come to Jesus.
Ο δε είπεν, Ελθέ. Και καταβάς από του πλοίου ο Πέτρος περιεπάτησεν επί τα ύδατα, διά να έλθη προς τον Ιησούν.
30 But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
Βλέπων όμως τον άνεμον δυνατόν εφοβήθη, και αρχίσας να καταποντίζηται, έκραξε λέγων· Κύριε, σώσον με.
31 Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Και ευθύς ο Ιησούς εκτείνας την χείρα επίασεν αυτόν και λέγει προς αυτόν· Ολιγόπιστε, εις τι εδίστασας;
32 When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.
Και αφού εισήλθον εις το πλοίον, έπαυσεν ο άνεμος·
33 Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, “You are truly the Son of God!”
οι δε εν τω πλοίω ελθόντες προσεκύνησαν αυτόν, λέγοντες· Αληθώς Θεού Υιός είσαι.
34 When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.
Και διαπεράσαντες ήλθον εις την γην Γεννησαρέτ.
35 When the people of that place recognized him, they sent into all that surrounding region and brought to him all who were sick;
Και γνωρίσαντες αυτόν οι άνθρωποι του τόπου εκείνου, απέστειλαν εις όλην την περίχωρον εκείνην και έφεραν προς αυτόν πάντας τους πάσχοντας,
36 and they begged him that they might just touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.
και παρεκάλουν αυτόν να εγγίσωσι μόνον το άκρον του ιματίου αυτού· και όσοι ήγγισαν ιατρεύθησαν.
