James 4
1 Where do wars and fightings among you come from? Do not they come from your pleasures that war in your members?
D'onde veem as guerras e pelejas entre vós? Porventura não veem de aqui, a saber, dos vossos deleites, que nos vossos membros guerreiam?
2 You lust, and do not have. You murder and covet, and cannot obtain. You fight and make war. You do not have, because you do not ask.
Cubiçaes, e nada tendes: sois invejosos, e cubiçosos, e não podeis alcançar: combateis e guerreaes, e nada tendes, porque não pedis.
3 You ask, and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.
Pedis, e não recebeis, porque pedis mal, para o gastardes em vossos deleites.
4 You adulterers and adulteresses, do not you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
Adulteros e adulteras, não sabeis vós que a amizade do mundo é inimizade contra Deus? Portanto qualquer que quizer ser amigo do mundo constitue-se inimigo de Deus.
5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who lives in us yearns jealously”?
Ou cuidaes vós que em vão diz a Escriptura: O espirito que em nós habita tem desejo de inveja?
6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
Antes dá maior graça. Portanto diz: Deus resiste aos soberbos, porém dá graça aos humildes.
7 Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Sujeitae-vos pois a Deus, resisti ao diabo, e elle fugirá de vós.
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Chegae-vos a Deus, e elle se chegará a vós. Alimpae as mãos, peccadores; e, vós de duplo animo, purificae os corações.
9 Lament, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.
Senti as vossas miserias, e lamentae, e chorae: converta-se o vosso riso em pranto, e o vosso gozo em tristeza.
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.
Humilhae-vos perante o Senhor, e elle vos exaltará.
11 Do not speak against one another, brothers. He who speaks against a brother and judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.
Irmãos, não falleis mal uns dos outros. Quem falla mal de um irmão, e julga a seu irmão, falla mal da lei, e julga a lei: e, se tu julgas a lei, já não és observador da lei, mas juiz.
12 Only one is the lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge another?
Ha só um legislador, que pode salvar e destruir. Porém tu quem és, que julgas a outrem?
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow let’s go into this city and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit.”
Eia pois agora vós, que dizeis: Hoje, ou ámanhã, iremos a tal cidade, e lá passaremos um anno, e contrataremos, e ganharemos;
14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
Digo-vos que não sabeis o que acontecerá ámanhã. Porque, que é a vossa vida? É um vapor que apparece por um pouco, e depois se desvanece.
15 For you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that.”
Em logar do que devieis dizer: Se o Senhor quizer, e se vivermos, faremos isto ou aquillo.
16 But now you glory in your boasting. All such boasting is evil.
Mas agora vos gloriaes em vossas presumpções: toda a gloria tal como esta é maligna.
17 To him therefore who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
Aquelle pois que sabe fazer o bem e o não faz commette peccado.
