Acts 27
1 When it was determined that we should sail for Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners to a centurion named Julius, of the Augustan band.
Quand il fut décidé que nous irions par mer en Italie, on remit Paul et quelques autres prisonniers à un centenier nommé Julius, de la cohorte Augusta.
2 Embarking in a ship of Adramyttium, which was about to sail to places on the coast of Asia, we put to sea, Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica being with us.
Étant montés sur un navire d'Adramytte, qui devait longer les côtes de l'Asie, nous partîmes. Aristarque, Macédonien de Thessalonique, était avec nous.
3 The next day, we touched at Sidon. Julius treated Paul kindly and gave him permission to go to his friends and refresh himself.
Le jour suivant, nous arrivâmes à Sidon; et Julius, qui traitait Paul avec humanité, lui permit d'aller voir ses amis et de recevoir leurs soins.
4 Putting to sea from there, we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.
Puis, étant partis de là, nous suivîmes les côtes de l'île de Chypre, parce que les vents étaient contraires.
5 When we had sailed across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.
Après avoir traversé la mer de Cilicie et de Pamphylie, nous arrivâmes à Myra, en Lycie.
6 There the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy, and he put us on board.
Là, le centenier trouva un navire d'Alexandrie, qui allait en Italie, et sur lequel il nous fit monter.
7 When we had sailed slowly many days, and had come with difficulty opposite Cnidus, the wind not allowing us further, we sailed under the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone.
Après plusieurs jours d'une navigation lente et pénible, nous arrivâmes vis-à-vis de Cnide. Le vent ne nous permettant pas d'aborder, nous suivîmes les côtes de l'île de Crète, vers Salmone.
8 With difficulty sailing along it we came to a certain place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea.
Après l'avoir longée, non sans difficulté, nous vînmes à un endroit appelé Beaux-Ports, près de la ville de Lasée.
9 When much time had passed and the voyage was now dangerous because the Fast had now already gone by, Paul admonished them
Comme il s'était écoulé beaucoup de temps, et que la navigation devenait dangereuse — l'époque du Jeûne étant déjà passée — Paul fit entendre ces paroles d'avertissement:
10 and said to them, “Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.”
Je vois que la navigation ne se fera pas sans péril et sans de graves dommages, non seulement pour la cargaison et le bâtiment, mais aussi pour nos personnes.
11 But the centurion gave more heed to the master and to the owner of the ship than to those things which were spoken by Paul.
Mais le centenier se fiait plutôt au pilote et au capitaine du navire, qu'à ce que Paul disait.
12 Because the haven was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised going to sea from there, if by any means they could reach Phoenix and winter there, which is a port of Crete, looking southwest and northwest.
Comme le port n'était pas bon pour hiverner, la plupart furent d'avis d'en repartir et de tâcher de gagner Phénix, port de la Crète, qui regarde le Sud-Ouest et le Nord-Ouest, pour y passer l'hiver.
13 When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close to shore.
Une brise du Sud s'étant mise à souffler, ils crurent qu'ils exécuteraient à leur gré leur dessein, et, ayant levé l'ancre, ils côtoyèrent de près l'île de Crète.
14 But before long, a stormy wind beat down from shore, which is called Euroclydon.
Bientôt après, un vent furieux, appelé Euraquilon, vint s'abattre sur l'île.
15 When the ship was caught and could not face the wind, we gave way to it and were driven along.
Le navire se trouva entraîné, sans pouvoir résister à l'ouragan, et nous nous laissâmes aller à la dérive.
16 Running under the lee of a small island called Clauda, we were able, with difficulty, to secure the boat.
Ayant été poussés au-dessous d'une petite île, appelée Clauda, nous parvînmes avec peine à nous rendre maîtres de la chaloupe.
17 After they had hoisted it up, they used cables to help reinforce the ship. Fearing that they would run aground on the Syrtis sand bars, they lowered the sea anchor, and so were driven along.
Après l'avoir hissée, on prit des mesures de sûreté. On lia le navire par-dessous avec des cordes; puis, dans la crainte d'échouer sur les bancs de la Syrte, on amena les voiles, et on se laissa ainsi emporter par le vent.
18 As we labored exceedingly with the storm, the next day they began to throw things overboard.
Le lendemain, la tempête étant toujours aussi forte, on jeta la cargaison à la mer.
19 On the third day, they threw out the ship’s tackle with their own hands.
Le troisième jour, nous jetâmes de nos propres mains les agrès du navire.
20 When neither sun nor stars shone on us for many days, and no small storm pressed on us, all hope that we would be saved was now taken away.
Pendant plusieurs jours, ni le soleil, ni les étoiles ne se montrèrent, et la tempête restait toujours si violente que nous perdîmes toute espérance de nous sauver.
21 When they had been long without food, Paul stood up in the middle of them and said, “Sirs, you should have listened to me, and not have set sail from Crete and have gotten this injury and loss.
Comme il y avait longtemps qu'on n'avait mangé, Paul se leva au milieu d'eux et leur dit: Mes amis, il aurait fallu me croire, et ne pas partir de Crète; nous aurions évité ce péril et cette perte.
22 Now I exhort you to cheer up, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.
Mais maintenant, je vous exhorte à prendre courage; aucun de nous ne périra, et il n'y aura de perte que celle du navire.
23 For there stood by me this night an angel, belonging to the God whose I am and whom I serve,
Cette nuit, en effet, un ange du Dieu à qui je suis et que je sers, m'est apparu
24 saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar. Behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.’
et m'a dit: Paul, ne crains point; il faut que tu comparaisses devant César; et voici que Dieu t'a donné tous ceux qui naviguent avec toi.
25 Therefore, sirs, cheer up! For I believe God, that it will be just as it has been spoken to me.
C'est pourquoi, mes amis, ayez bon courage, car j'ai cette confiance en Dieu, qu'il en sera comme il m'a été dit;
26 But we must run aground on a certain island.”
mais il faut que nous soyons jetés sur quelque île.
27 But when the fourteenth night had come, as we were driven back and forth in the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors surmised that they were drawing near to some land.
C'était déjà la quatorzième nuit que nous étions ballottés sur l'Adriatique, quand vers minuit, les matelots estimèrent qu'ils approchaient de quelque terre.
28 They took soundings and found twenty fathoms. After a little while, they took soundings again, and found fifteen fathoms.
Ayant jeté la sonde, ils trouvèrent vingt brasses; un peu plus loin, ils la jetèrent encore, et trouvèrent quinze brasses.
29 Fearing that we would run aground on rocky ground, they let go four anchors from the stern, and wished for daylight.
Alors, craignant de donner contre des écueils, ils jetèrent quatre ancres du haut de la poupe, et ils appelaient de leurs voeux la venue du jour.
30 As the sailors were trying to flee out of the ship and had lowered the boat into the sea, pretending that they would lay out anchors from the bow,
Mais, comme les matelots cherchaient à s'échapper du navire et mettaient la chaloupe à la mer, sous prétexte de jeter des ancres du côté de la proue,
31 Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, “Unless these stay in the ship, you cannot be saved.”
Paul dit au centenier: Si ces hommes ne restent pas à bord, vous ne pouvez être sauvés.
32 Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat and let it fall off.
Alors les soldats coupèrent les cordes de la chaloupe et la laissèrent tomber.
33 While the day was coming on, Paul begged them all to take some food, saying, “Today is the fourteenth day that you wait and continue fasting, having taken nothing.
Puis, en attendant que le jour vînt, Paul les exhorta tous à prendre de la nourriture. Voici, leur dit-il, le quatorzième jour que vous êtes dans l'attente, et que vous restez à jeun, sans rien manger.
34 Therefore I beg you to take some food, for this is for your safety; for not a hair will perish from any of your heads.”
Je vous exhorte donc à prendre de la nourriture; car cela est nécessaire à votre salut. Aucun d'entre vous ne perdra un cheveu de sa tête!
35 When he had said this and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all; then he broke it and began to eat.
Ayant ainsi parlé, il prit du pain; il rendit grâces à Dieu, en présence de tous; puis il le rompit et se mit à manger.
36 Then they all cheered up, and they also took food.
Tous alors, reprenant courage, mangèrent aussi.
37 In all, we were two hundred seventy-six souls on the ship.
Or, nous étions en tout deux cent soixante seize personnes à bord.
38 When they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea.
Quand ils se furent rassasiés, ils allégèrent le navire en jetant les provisions à la mer.
39 When it was day, they did not recognize the land, but they noticed a certain bay with a beach, and they decided to try to drive the ship onto it.
Le jour venu, ils ne reconnaissaient pas la terre; mais, ayant aperçu un golfe avec une plage, ils résolurent d'y mettre, si possible, le navire à l'abri.
40 Casting off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time untying the rudder ropes. Hoisting up the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach.
Ils coupèrent donc les câbles des ancres qu'ils abandonnèrent à la mer, et ils lâchèrent les amarres des gouvernails; puis, ayant mis au vent la voile d'artimon, ils tâchèrent de gagner le rivage.
41 But coming to a place where two seas met, they ran the vessel aground. The bow struck and remained immovable, but the stern began to break up by the violence of the waves.
Mais, étant tombés sur un endroit battu par la mer, des deux côtés, ils y firent échouer le navire; et, tandis que la proue enfoncée restait immobile, la poupe était brisée par la violence des vagues.
42 The soldiers’ counsel was to kill the prisoners, so that none of them would swim out and escape.
Alors les soldats furent d'avis de tuer les prisonniers, de peur que l'un d'eux ne vînt à s'échapper à la nage.
43 But the centurion, desiring to save Paul, stopped them from their purpose, and commanded that those who could swim should throw themselves overboard first to go toward the land;
Mais le centenier, voulant sauver Paul, les empêcha d'exécuter leur dessein. Il ordonna à ceux qui savaient nager de se jeter à l'eau les premiers et de gagner la terre,
44 and the rest should follow, some on planks and some on other things from the ship. So they all escaped safely to the land.
et à ceux qui restaient, de se mettre, les uns sur des planches, les autres sur quelques débris du navire. C'est ainsi que tous parvinrent à terre, sains et saufs.
