Acts 22
1 “Brothers and fathers, listen to the defense which I now make to you.”
Mes frères et mes pères, écoutez ce que j'ai à vous dire maintenant pour ma défense.
2 When they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they were even more quiet. He said,
Quand ils l'entendirent parler en langue hébraïque, ils redoublèrent d'attention. Alors il dit:
3 “I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict tradition of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as you all are today.
Je suis Juif, né à Tarse, en Cilicie; mais j'ai été élevé ici dans cette ville, aux pieds de Gamaliel, instruit dans la connaissance exacte de la loi de nos pères. J'étais plein de zèle pour Dieu, comme vous l'êtes tous aujourd'hui.
4 I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women,
Cette secte, je l'ai persécutée à mort, chargeant de chaînes et jetant en prison hommes et femmes:
5 as also the high priest and all the council of the elders testify, from whom also I received letters to the brothers, and traveled to Damascus to bring them also who were there to Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.
le souverain sacrificateur m'en est témoin, ainsi que toute l'assemblée des anciens. C'est d'eux, en effet, que je reçus des lettres pour les frères de Damas, où je me rendis, afin de jeter aussi dans les chaînes ceux qui se trouvaient là et de les amener à Jérusalem pour les y faire punir.
6 “As I made my journey and came close to Damascus, about noon suddenly a great light shone around me from the sky.
Or il arriva, comme j'étais en chemin et que j'approchais de Damas, vers midi, que tout à coup une grande lumière, venant du ciel, resplendit autour de moi.
7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’
Je tombai à terre, et j'entendis une voix qui me disait: Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu?
8 I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.’
Je répondis: Qui es-tu. Seigneur? La voix me dit; Je suis Jésus de Nazareth, que tu persécutes.
9 “Those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they did not understand the voice of him who spoke to me.
Ceux qui étaient avec moi virent bien la lumière, mais ils n'entendirent pas la voix de celui qui me parlait.
10 I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ The Lord said to me, ‘Arise, and go into Damascus. There you will be told about all things which are appointed for you to do.’
Alors je m'écriai: Que ferai-je, Seigneur? Le Seigneur me répondit: Lève-toi, va à Damas, et là on te dira tout ce qu'il t'est ordonné de faire.
11 When I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.
Et comme je n'y voyais pas, à cause de l'éclat de cette lumière, ceux qui étaient avec moi me prirent par la main, et j'allai à Damas.
12 “One Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews who lived in Damascus,
Un certain Ananias, homme pieux selon la loi, auquel tous les Juifs demeurant à Damas rendaient un bon témoignage, vint me trouver;
13 came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ In that very hour I looked up at him.
et, se tenant devant moi, il me dit: Saul, mon frère, recouvre la vue. Au même instant, je recouvrai la vue et je vis Ananias.
14 He said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.
Puis il me dit: Le Dieu de nos pères t'a destiné à connaître sa volonté, à voir le Juste et à entendre la parole de sa bouche.
15 For you will be a witness for him to all men of what you have seen and heard.
Car tu seras pour lui, devant tous les hommes, le témoin des choses que tu as vues et entendues.
16 Now why do you wait? Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’
Et maintenant, que tardes-tu? Lève-toi, sois baptisé et purifié de tes péchés, en invoquant son nom.
17 “When I had returned to Jerusalem and while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance
De retour à Jérusalem, comme je priais dans le temple, je fus ravi en extase;
18 and saw him saying to me, ‘Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not receive testimony concerning me from you.’
et je vis Jésus qui me disait: Hâte-toi, sors promptement de Jérusalem; car on n'y recevra point le témoignage que tu me rendras.
19 I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue those who believed in you.
Je répondis: Seigneur, ils savent eux-mêmes que je mettais en prison et que je faisais battre de verges dans les synagogues ceux qui croient en toi.
20 When the blood of Stephen, your witness, was shed, I also was standing by, consenting to his death, and guarding the cloaks of those who killed him.’
Lorsque fut répandu le sang d'Etienne, ton témoin, j'étais là, j'approuvais, et je gardais les vêtements de ceux qui le faisaient mourir.
21 “He said to me, ‘Depart, for I will send you out far from here to the Gentiles.’”
Alors il me dit: Va; car je t'enverrai au loin, vers les Païens.
22 They listened to him until he said that; then they lifted up their voice and said, “Rid the earth of this fellow, for he is not fit to live!”
On avait écouté Paul jusque-là; mais à ce mot, ils se mirent à crier: Ote de la terre un tel homme! Il n'est pas digne de vivre!
23 As they cried out, threw off their cloaks, and threw dust into the air,
Ils poussaient des cris; ils jetaient leurs vêtements, et faisaient voler la poussière en l'air.
24 the commanding officer commanded him to be brought into the barracks, ordering him to be examined by scourging, that he might know for what crime they shouted against him like that.
Le tribun ordonna alors de mener Paul dans la forteresse et de lui donner la question par le fouet, afin de savoir pour quel sujet ils criaient ainsi contre lui.
25 When they had tied him up with thongs, Paul asked the centurion who stood by, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and not found guilty?”
Comme on l'attachait pour lui donner les coups, Paul dit au centenier qui était présent: Vous est-il permis de battre de verges un citoyen romain, qui n'a pas même été condamné?
26 When the centurion heard it, he went to the commanding officer and told him, “Watch what you are about to do, for this man is a Roman!”
A ces paroles, le centenier alla avertir le tribun: Que vas-tu faire? lui dit-il; car cet homme est citoyen romain.
27 The commanding officer came and asked him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?” He said, “Yes.”
Le tribun, étant venu, dit à Paul: Dis-moi, es-tu citoyen romain? Oui, répondit Paul.
28 The commanding officer answered, “I bought my citizenship for a great price.” Paul said, “But I was born a Roman.”
Le tribun reprit: J'ai acheté à grand prix ce droit de citoyen. Et moi, dit Paul, je l'ai par ma naissance.
29 Immediately those who were about to examine him departed from him, and the commanding officer also was afraid when he realized that he was a Roman, because he had bound him.
Aussitôt, ceux qui devaient lui donner la question s'éloignèrent; et le tribun eut peur, quand il sut que celui qu'il avait fait charger de liens était citoyen romain.
30 But on the next day, desiring to know the truth about why he was accused by the Jews, he freed him from the bonds and commanded the chief priests and all the council to come together, and brought Paul down and set him before them.
Le lendemain, voulant savoir exactement de quoi Paul était accusé par les Juifs, le tribun lui fit ôter ses liens; et, ayant ordonné aux principaux sacrificateurs et à tout le Sanhédrin de se réunir, il amena Paul et le fit comparaître devant eux.
