Acts 10
1 Now there was a certain man in Caesarea, Cornelius by name, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment,
Il y avait à Césarée un homme nommé Cornélius, centurion d'une cohorte appelée Italica;
2 a devout man, and one who feared God with all his house, who gave gifts for the needy generously to the people, and always prayed to God.
il était pieux, vivait dans la crainte de Dieu, ainsi que tous les siens, faisait beaucoup d'aumônes au peuple et priait Dieu sans cesse.
3 At about the ninth hour of the day, he clearly saw in a vision an angel of God coming to him and saying to him, “Cornelius!”
Cet homme eut une vision; il vit distinctement vers la neuvième heure du jour un ange de Dieu qui entrait chez lui et lui disait: «Cornélius!»
4 He, fastening his eyes on him and being frightened, said, “What is it, Lord?” He said to him, “Your prayers and your gifts to the needy have gone up for a memorial before God.
Il le regarda tout effrayé. «Qu'y a-t-il, Seigneur?» lui répondit-il. «Tes prières et tes aumônes, lui dit l'ange, sont montées jusqu'à Dieu, et il en a été fait mention devant lui.
5 Now send men to Joppa, and get Simon, who is also called Peter.
Et maintenant envoie des hommes à Joppé, et fais venir ici un certain Simon, surnommé Pierre;
6 He is staying with a tanner named Simon, whose house is by the seaside.
il demeure chez Simon le tanneur, dont la maison est près de la mer.»
7 When the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier of those who waited on him continually.
Quand l'ange qui lui avait parlé fut parti, Cornélius appela deux de ses domestiques et un soldat pieux de ceux qui étaient attachés à sa personne;
8 Having explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.
il leur raconta tout et les envoya à Joppé.
9 Now on the next day as they were on their journey and got close to the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray at about noon.
Le lendemain, comme ils étaient en route et s'approchaient de la ville, Pierre monta sur la terrasse de la maison vers la sixième heure, pour y prier.
10 He became hungry and desired to eat, but while they were preparing, he fell into a trance.
Il eut faim et demanda à manger. Pendant qu'on lui préparait quelque chose, il eut une extase,
11 He saw heaven opened and a certain container descending to him, like a great sheet let down by four corners on the earth,
il, vit le ciel ouvert et un objet ressemblant à une grande nappe nouée aux quatre coins en descendre et s'abaisser vers la terre;
12 in which were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild animals, reptiles, and birds of the sky.
à l'intérieur de la nappe il y avait des quadrupèdes de toute espèce, des reptiles de la terre et des oiseaux du ciel.
13 A voice came to him, “Rise, Peter, kill and eat!”
«Lève-toi, Pierre, lui dit une voix, tue et mange.»
14 But Peter said, “Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.”
Mais Pierre répondit: «Nullement, Seigneur, car jamais je n'ai rien mangé de souillé ni d'impur.»
15 A voice came to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed, you must not call unclean.”
Alors une voix s'adressa à lui une seconde fois: «N'appelle pas souillé ce que Dieu a purifié.»
16 This was done three times, and immediately the thing was received up into heaven.
Cela se répéta par trois fois et aussitôt après l'objet remonta au ciel.
17 Now while Peter was very perplexed in himself what the vision which he had seen might mean, behold, the men who were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon’s house, stood before the gate,
Pendant que Pierre méditait, incertain du sens de la vision qu'il venait d'avoir, les hommes envoyés par Cornélius et qui s'étaient informés de la maison de Simon se présentèrent à la porte d'entrée
18 and called and asked whether Simon, who was also called Peter, was lodging there.
et appelèrent pour savoir si: «Simon, surnommé Pierre, demeurait là.»
19 While Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men seek you.
A ce moment même l'Esprit dit à Pierre, qui était à réfléchir sur la vision: «Voici trois hommes qui te demandent,
20 But arise, get down, and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them.”
lève-toi, descends, et pars avec eux sans scrupule, car c'est moi qui les ai envoyés.»
21 Peter went down to the men, and said, “Behold, I am he whom you seek. Why have you come?”
Alors Pierre descendit: «Me voici, dit-il à ces hommes, je suis la personne que vous demandez; quel motif vous amène?»
22 They said, “Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous man and one who fears God, and well spoken of by all the nation of the Jews, was directed by a holy angel to invite you to his house, and to listen to what you say.”
Ils répondirent: «Cornélius, centurion, homme juste et craignant Dieu, auquel toute la population juive rend un bon témoignage, a reçu d'un saint ange l'ordre divin de te faire venir dans sa maison et d'écouter tes paroles.»
23 So he called them in and provided a place to stay. On the next day Peter arose and went out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.
Alors Pierre les fit entrer et leur donna l'hospitalité. Le lendemain, il se mit en route et partit avec eux, et quelques-uns des frères de Joppé l'accompagnèrent.
24 On the next day they entered into Caesarea. Cornelius was waiting for them, having called together his relatives and his near friends.
Le jour suivant, ils arrivèrent à Césarée. Cornélius les attendait et avait réuni ses parents et ses amis intimes.
25 When Peter entered, Cornelius met him, fell down at his feet, and worshiped him.
Au moment où Pierre entra, Cornélius, qui était allé à sa rencontre, tomba à ses pieds et se prosterna.
26 But Peter raised him up, saying, “Stand up! I myself am also a man.”
Mais Pierre le releva. «Lève-toi, lui dit-il, comme toi, je ne suis qu'un homme»,
27 As he talked with him, he went in and found many gathered together.
et il entra en s'entretenant avec lui. Trouvant un grand nombre de personnes réunies,
28 He said to them, “You yourselves know how it is an unlawful thing for a man who is a Jew to join himself or come to one of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any man unholy or unclean.
il leur dit: «Vous savez, qu'il est défendu à un Juif de se mettre en rapport personnel avec un homme d'une autre nation ou d'entrer chez lui; mais, pour ce qui me concerne, Dieu m'a appris à ne regarder aucun homme comme souillé ou impur.
29 Therefore I also came without complaint when I was sent for. I ask therefore, why did you send for me?”
Voilà pourquoi, étant appelé, je suis venu ici sans objection; je demande donc pour quel motif vous m'avez fait appeler.»
30 Cornelius said, “Four days ago, I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour, I prayed in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing
Cornélius répondit: «il y a quatre jours, j'avais jeûné jusqu'à cette heure-ci, et, à la neuvième heure, j'étais chez moi à prier, quand tout à coup un homme portant un vêtement éblouissant se présenta à moi
31 and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer is heard, and your gifts to the needy are remembered in the sight of God.
et me dit: «Cornélius, ta prière a été exaucée et il a été fait mention devant Dieu de tes aumônes.
32 Send therefore to Joppa and summon Simon, who is also called Peter. He is staying in the house of a tanner named Simon, by the seaside. When he comes, he will speak to you.’
Envoie donc à Joppé et fais venir Simon surnommé Pierre, il demeure dans la maison de Simon le tanneur, près de la mer.»
33 Therefore I sent to you at once, and it was good of you to come. Now therefore we are all here present in the sight of God to hear all things that have been commanded you by God.”
Immédiatement j'ai envoyé vers toi; tu as eu la bonté de venir, et maintenant nous sommes tous en présence de Dieu, prêts à entendre tout ce que le Seigneur t'a ordonné de nous dire.»
34 Peter opened his mouth and said, “Truly I perceive that God does not show favoritism;
Pierre prit alors la parole: «En vérité, dit-il, je reconnais que Dieu ne fait point acception de personnes,
35 but in every nation he who fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him.
mais que, chez tous les peuples, celui qui le craint et qui pratique la justice lui est agréable.
36 The word which he sent to the children of Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all—
Il a envoyé sa Parole aux enfants d'Israël, en leur faisant prêcher l'Évangile de paix par Jésus-Christ, le Seigneur de tous;
37 you yourselves know what happened, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
vous savez ce qui s'est passé dans toute la Judée, ce qui avait d'abord commencé en Galilée à la suite du baptême prêché par Jean;
38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
vous savez comment Jésus de Nazareth, oint par Dieu d'Esprit saint et de puissance, allait de lieu en lieu en faisant le bien, en guérissant tous ceux qui étaient sous l'empire du diable, parce que Dieu était avec lui
39 We are witnesses of everything he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem; whom they also killed, hanging him on a tree.
(nous avons été témoins de tout ce, qu'il a fait dans le pays des Juifs et à Jérusalem); ceux-ci l'ont mis à mort, ils l'ont pendu à une croix.
40 God raised him up the third day and gave him to be revealed,
Mais Dieu l'a ressuscité le troisième jour et a permis qu’il se montrât
41 not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen before by God, to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
non à tout le peuple, mais aux témoins qu'il avait choisis d'avance, c'est-à-dire à nous qui avons mangé et bu avec lui après sa résurrection d'entre les morts.
42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that this is he who is appointed by God as the Judge of the living and the dead.
Et il nous a ordonné de prêcher au peuple et d'attester que c'est lui qui a été désigné par Dieu pour juger les vivants et les morts.
43 All the prophets testify about him, that through his name everyone who believes in him will receive remission of sins.”
C'est de lui que tous les prophètes rendent ce témoignage: le pardon des péchés sera accordé par son nom à quiconque croit en lui.»
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the word.
Pendant que Pierre parlait encore de ces choses, l'Esprit saint descendit sur tous ceux qui écoutaient la Parole,
45 They of the circumcision who believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was also poured out on the Gentiles.
et les croyants circoncis qui avaient accompagné Pierre étaient confondus de voir que le don du saint Esprit s'étendait aussi aux païens.
46 For they heard them speaking in other languages and magnifying God. Then Peter answered,
En effet, ils les entendaient parler en langues étrangères et glorifier Dieu.
47 “Can anyone forbid these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just like us.”
Pierre dit alors: «Peut-on interdire l'eau du baptême à ceux qui ont reçu l'Esprit saint aussi bien que nous?...»
48 He commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay some days.
et il ordonna qu'ils fussent baptisés au nom de Jésus-Christ. Ceux-ci le prièrent de rester quelques jours avec eux.
