1 Samuel 20
1 David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said to Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my iniquity? What is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?”
ダビデはラマのナヨテから逃げてきて、ヨナタンに言った、「わたしが何をし、どのような悪いことがあり、あなたの父の前にどんな罪を犯したので、わたしを殺そうとされるのでしょうか」。
2 He said to him, “Far from it; you will not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small, but that he discloses it to me. Why would my father hide this thing from me? It is not so.”
ヨナタンは彼に言った、「決して殺されることはありません。父は事の大小を問わず、わたしに告げないですることはありません。どうして父がわたしにその事を隠しましょう。そのようなことはありません」。
3 David swore moreover, and said, “Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes; and he says, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved;’ but truly as the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.”
しかしダビデは答えた、「あなたの父は、わたしがあなたの好意をえていることをよく知っておられます。それで『ヨナタンが悲しむことのないように、これを知らせないでおこう』と思っておられるのです。しかし、主は生きておられ、あなたの魂は生きています。わたしと死との間は、ただ一歩です」。
4 Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatever your soul desires, I will even do it for you.”
ヨナタンはダビデに言った、「あなたが言われることはなんでもします」。
5 David said to Jonathan, “Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to dine with the king; but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field to the third day at evening.
ダビデはヨナタンに言った、「あすは、ついたちですから、わたしは王と一緒に食事をしなければなりません。しかしわたしを行かせて三日目の夕方まで、野原に隠れることを許してください。
6 If your father misses me at all, then say, ‘David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem, his city; for it is the yearly sacrifice there for all the family.’
もしあなたの父がわたしのことを尋ねられるならば、その時、言ってください、『ダビデはふるさとの町ベツレヘムへ急いで行くことを許してくださいと、しきりにわたしに求めました。そこで全家の年祭があるからです』。
7 If he says, ‘It is well,’ your servant shall have peace; but if he is angry, then know that evil is determined by him.
もし彼が「良し」と言われるなら、しもべは安全ですが、怒られるなら、わたしに害を加える決心でおられるのを知ってください。
8 Therefore deal kindly with your servant, for you have brought your servant into a covenant of the LORD with you; but if there is iniquity in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?”
あなたは、主の前で、しもべと契約を結んでくださいました。それでどうぞしもべにいつくしみを施してください。しかし、もしわたしに悪いことがあるならば、あなた自らわたしを殺してください。どうしてあなたの父のもとへわたしを引いていかなければならないでしょう」。
9 Jonathan said, “Far be it from you; for if I should at all know that evil were determined by my father to come on you, then would not I tell you that?”
ヨナタンは言った、「そのようなことは決してありません。父があなたに害を加える決心をしていることがわたしにわかっているならば、わたしはそれをあなたに告げないでおきましょうか」。
10 Then David said to Jonathan, “Who will tell me if your father answers you roughly?”
ダビデはヨナタンに言った、「あなたの父が荒々しくあなたに答えられる時、だれがわたしに告げるでしょうか」。
11 Jonathan said to David, “Come! Let’s go out into the field.” They both went out into the field.
ヨナタンはダビデに言った、「さあ、野原へ出ていこう」。こうしてふたりは野原へ出て行った。
12 Jonathan said to David, “By the LORD, the God of Israel, when I have sounded out my father about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if there is good toward David, will not I then send to you and disclose it to you?
そしてヨナタンはダビデに言った、「イスラエルの神、主が、証人です。明日か明後日の今ごろ、わたしが父の心を探って、父がダビデに対して良いのを見ながら、人をつかわしてあなたに知らせないようなことをするでしょうか。
13 The LORD do so to Jonathan and more also, should it please my father to do you evil, if I do not disclose it to you and send you away, that you may go in peace. May the LORD be with you as he has been with my father.
しかし、もし父があなたに害を加えようと思っているのに、それをあなたに知らせず、あなたを逃がして、安全に去らせないならば、主よ、どうぞ幾重にも、このヨナタンを罰してください。どうぞ主が父と共におられたように、あなたと共におられますように。
14 You shall not only show me the loving kindness of the LORD while I still live, that I not die;
もしわたしがなお生きながらえているならば、主のいつくしみをわたしに施し、死を免れさせてください。
15 but you shall also not cut off your kindness from my house forever, no, not when the LORD has cut off every one of the enemies of David from the surface of the earth.”
またわたしの家をも、長くあなたのいつくしみにあずからせてください。主がダビデの敵をことごとく地のおもてから断ち滅ぼされる時、
16 So Jonathan made a covenant with David’s house, saying, “The LORD will require it at the hand of David’s enemies.”
ヨナタンの名をダビデの家から絶やさないでください。どうぞ主がダビデの敵に、あだを返されるように」。
17 Jonathan caused David to swear again, for the love that he had to him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul.
そしてヨナタンは重ねてダビデに誓わせた。彼を愛したからである。ヨナタンは自分の命のように彼を愛していた。
18 Then Jonathan said to him, “Tomorrow is the new moon, and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty.
ヨナタンはダビデに言った、「あすはついたちです。あなたの席があいているので、どうしたのかと尋ねられるでしょう。
19 When you have stayed three days, go down quickly and come to the place where you hid yourself when this started, and remain by the stone Ezel.
三日目には、きびしく尋ねられるでしょうから、先にあなたが隠れた場所へ行って、向こうの石塚のかたわらにいてください。
20 I will shoot three arrows on its side, as though I shot at a mark.
わたしは的を射るようにして、矢を三本、そのそばに放ちます。
21 Behold, I will send the boy, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows!’ If I tell the boy, ‘Behold, the arrows are on this side of you. Take them;’ then come, for there is peace to you and no danger, as the LORD lives.
そして、『行って矢を捜してきなさい』と言って子供をつかわしましょう。わたしが子供に、『矢は手前にある。それを取ってきなさい』と言うならば、その時あなたはきてください。主が生きておられるように、あなたは安全で、何も危険がないからです。
22 But if I say this to the boy, ‘Behold, the arrows are beyond you,’ then go your way, for the LORD has sent you away.
しかしわたしがその子供に、『矢は向こうにある』と言うならば、その時、あなたは去って行きなさい。主があなたを去らせられるのです。
23 Concerning the matter which you and I have spoken of, behold, the LORD is between you and me forever.”
あなたとわたしとで話しあった事については、主が常にあなたとわたしとの間におられます」。
24 So David hid himself in the field. When the new moon had come, the king sat himself down to eat food.
そこでダビデは野原に身を隠した。さて、ついたちになったので、王は食事をするため席に着いた。
25 The king sat on his seat, as at other times, even on the seat by the wall; and Jonathan stood up, and Abner sat by Saul’s side, but David’s place was empty.
王はいつものように壁寄りに席に着き、ヨナタンはその向かい側の席に着き、アブネルはサウルの横の席に着いたが、ダビデの場所にはだれもいなかった。
26 Nevertheless Saul did not say anything that day, for he thought, “Something has happened to him. He is not clean. Surely he is not clean.”
ところがその日サウルは何も言わなかった、「彼に何か起って汚れたのだろう。きっと汚れたのにちがいない」と思ったからである。
27 On the next day after the new moon, the second day, David’s place was empty. Saul said to Jonathan his son, “Why did not the son of Jesse come to eat, either yesterday, or today?”
しかし、ふつか目すなわち、ついたちの明くる日も、ダビデの場所はあいていたので、サウルは、その子ヨナタンに言った、「どうしてエッサイの子は、きのうもきょうも食事にこないのか」。
28 Jonathan answered Saul, “David earnestly asked permission of me to go to Bethlehem.
ヨナタンはサウルに答えた、「ダビデは、ベツレヘムへ行くことを許してくださいと、しきりにわたしに求めました。
29 He said, ‘Please let me go, for our family has a sacrifice in the city. My brother has commanded me to be there. Now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me go away and see my brothers.’ Therefore he has not come to the king’s table.”
彼は言いました、『わたしに行かせてください。われわれの一族が町で祭をするので、兄がわたしに来るようにと命じました。それでもし、あなたの前に恵みを得ますならば、どうぞ、わたしに行くことを許し、兄弟たちに会わせてください』。それで彼は王の食卓にこなかったのです」。
30 Then Saul’s anger burned against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness?
その時サウルはヨナタンにむかって怒りを発し、彼に言った、「あなたは心の曲った、そむく女の産んだ子だ。あなたがエッサイの子を選んで、自分の身をはずかしめ、また母の身をはずかしめていることをわたしが知らないと思うのか。
31 For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, you will not be established, nor will your kingdom. Therefore now send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die!”
エッサイの子がこの世に生きながらえている間は、あなたも、あなたの王国も堅く立っていくことはできない。それゆえ今、人をつかわして、彼をわたしのもとに連れてこさせなさい。彼は必ず死ななければならない」。
32 Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, “Why should he be put to death? What has he done?”
ヨナタンは父サウルに答えた、「どうして彼は殺されなければならないのですか。彼は何をしたのですか」。
33 Saul cast his spear at him to strike him. By this Jonathan knew that his father was determined to put David to death.
ところがサウルはヨナタンを撃とうとして、やりを彼に向かって振り上げたので、ヨナタンは父がダビデを殺そうと、心に決めているのを知った。
34 So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month; for he was grieved for David, because his father had treated him shamefully.
ヨナタンは激しく怒って席を立ち、その月のふつかには食事をしなかった。父がダビデをはずかしめたので、ダビデのために憂えたからである。
35 In the morning, Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little boy with him.
あくる朝、ヨナタンは、ひとりの小さい子供を連れて、ダビデと打ち合わせたように野原に出て行った。
36 He said to his boy, “Run, find now the arrows which I shoot.” As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.
そしてその子供に言った、「走って行って、わたしの射る矢を捜しなさい」。子供が走って行く間に、ヨナタンは矢を彼の前の方に放った。
37 When the boy had come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the boy, and said, “Is not the arrow beyond you?”
そして子供が、ヨナタンの放った矢のところへ行った時、ヨナタンは子供のうしろから呼ばわって、「矢は向こうにあるではないか」と言った。
38 Jonathan cried after the boy, “Go fast! Hurry! Do not delay!” Jonathan’s boy gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.
ヨナタンはまた、その子供のうしろから呼ばわって言った、「早くせよ、急げ。とどまるな」。その子供は矢を拾い集めて主人ヨナタンのもとにきた。
39 But the boy did not know anything. Only Jonathan and David knew the matter.
しかし子供は何も知らず、ヨナタンとダビデだけがそのことを知っていた。
40 Jonathan gave his weapons to his boy, and said to him, “Go, carry them to the city.”
ヨナタンは自分の武器をその子供に渡して言った、「あなたはこれを町へ運んで行きなさい」。
41 As soon as the boy was gone, David arose out of the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times. They kissed one another and wept with one another, and David wept the most.
子供が行ってしまうとダビデは石塚のかたわらをはなれて立ちいで、地にひれ伏して三度敬礼した。そして、ふたりは互に口づけし、互に泣いた。やがてダビデは心が落ち着いた。
42 Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, because we have both sworn in the LORD’s name, saying, ‘The LORD is between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring, forever.’” He arose and departed; and Jonathan went into the city.
その時ヨナタンはダビデに言った、「無事に行きなさい。われわれふたりは、『主が常にわたしとあなたの間におられ、また、わたしの子孫とあなたの子孫の間におられる』と言って、主の名をさして誓ったのです」。こうしてダビデは立ち去り、ヨナタンは町にはいった。
