1 Corinthians 13

1 If I speak with the languages of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

Quand je parlerais les langues des hommes et celles des anges, si je n'ai pas la charité, je ne suis qu'un airain qui résonne, ou une cymbale qui retentit.

2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

Quand j'aurais le don de prophétie, et que je connaîtrais tous les mystères et toute la science; quand j'aurais toute la foi jusqu'à transporter des montagnes, si je n'ai pas la charité, je ne suis rien.

3 If I give away all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

Quand je distribuerais tous mes biens pour la nourriture des pauvres, quand je livrerais mon corps pour être brûlé, si je n'ai pas la charité, cela ne me sert de rien.

4 Love is patient and is kind. Love does not envy. Love does not brag, is not proud,

La charité est patiente; la charité est pleine de bonté. La charité n'est point envieuse; elle n'est pas présomptueuse, elle ne s'enfle pas d'orgueil.

5 does not behave itself inappropriately, does not seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil;

Elle ne fait rien de malhonnête; elle ne cherche pas son intérêt; elle ne s'aigrit pas; elle ne soupçonne point le mal.

6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;

Elle ne se réjouit pas de l'injustice, mais elle met sa joie dans la vérité.

7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.

Elle excuse tout, elle croit tout, elle espère tout, elle supporte tout.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will be done away with. Where there are various languages, they will cease. Where there is knowledge, it will be done away with.

La charité ne périt jamais. Les prophéties prendront fin, le don des langues cessera, la connaissance sera abolie.

9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part;

Car nous ne connaissons qu'imparfaitement, et nous ne prophétisons qu'imparfaitement;

10 but when that which is complete has come, then that which is partial will be done away with.

mais quand la perfection sera venue, alors ce qui est imparfait sera aboli.

11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child. Now that I have become a man, I have put away childish things.

Lorsque j'étais enfant, je parlais comme un enfant, je pensais comme un enfant, je raisonnais comme un enfant; lorsque je suis devenu homme, je me suis défait de ce qui tenait de l'enfant.

12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, even as I was also fully known.

Aujourd'hui nous voyons comme dans un miroir, confusément: alors nous verrons face à face! Aujourd'hui je connais imparfaitement: alors je connaîtrai comme j'ai été connu.

13 But now faith, hope, and love remain—these three. The greatest of these is love.

Maintenant donc, ces trois choses demeurent: la foi, l'espérance et la charité; mais la plus grande des trois est la charité.
