< Luke 4 >

1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
Now Jesus being full of the holy Spirit, returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being forty days tempted by the devil;
2 being tempted forty days by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days, and when they were ended, afterward he was hungry.
and He did eat nothing in all those days: and when they were ended, at last He was hungry.
3 And the devil said to him, If thou are the Son of God, speak to this stone that it may become bread.
And the devil said to Him, If thou art the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.
4 And Jesus answered, saying to him, It is written, Man will not live on bread alone, but on every saying of God.
And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, that man shall not live by bread only, but on every word of God.
5 And having brought him onto a high mountain, the devil showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
And the devil taking Him up into an high mountain, shewed Him all the kingdoms of the world in an instant,
6 And the devil said to him, I will give to thee all this authority, and the glory of them, because it has been delivered to me, and to whomever I want I give it.
and said to Him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for it is committed to me, and I give it to whomsoever I will.
7 If therefore thou will worship before me, it will all be thine.
Therefore, if thou wilt but worship me, they all shall be thine.
8 And having answered, Jesus said to him, Go thee behind me, Satan. It is written, Thou shall worship the Lord thy God, and him only shall thou serve.
And Jesus answering him said with indignation, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve.
9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and he said to him, If thou are the Son of God, cast thyself down from here,
And he brought Him to Jerusalem, and set him on a battlement of the temple, and said to Him, If thou art the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence;
10 for it is written, He will give his agents orders about thee, to protect thee,
for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee,
11 and, They will take thee up on their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
to keep thee, and they shall bear thee up in their hands, least thou dash thy foot against a stone.
12 And having answered, Jesus said to him, It is said, Thou shall not challenge the Lord thy God.
And Jesus answered him, it is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
13 And when the devil ended every temptation, he withdrew from him until a time.
And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from Him for a time.
14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee. And a report went out about him through the entire region around.
And Jesus returned by the influence of the Spirit into Galilee: and a fame was spread through all the country round about concerning Him:
15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
and He taught in their synagogues with universal applause.
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he was brought up. And according to that which was customary to him, he entered into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up to read.
And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up: and according to his custom He went into the synagogue on the sabbath-day, and stood up to read.
17 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. And having opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
And there was delivered to Him the book of the prophet Esaias; and opening the book, He found the place where it was written,
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to sent forth in deliverance those who have been broken,
"The spirit of the Lord is upon me to the end, for which He hath anointed me: He hath sent me to publish good tidings to the poor, to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to release them that are bruised,
19 to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.
and to preach the acceptable year of the Lord."
20 And having closed the book, having given it back to the attendant, he sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were focused on him.
And He folded up the book, and gave it again to the minister, and sat down: and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed upon Him.
21 And he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your ears.
And He said unto them, this day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
22 And all witnessed to him, and wondered at the words of grace that proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is this not the son of Joseph?
And they all bare witness to Him, and wondered at the gracefulness of the words, which proceeded from his mouth, and said, Is not this the son of Joseph?
23 And he said to them, Ye will doubtless say to me this proverb: Physician, heal thyself. How many things we heard that happened at Capernaum, do also here in thy fatherland.
And He said unto them, No doubt ye will apply to me this proverb, "Physician, cure thyself, and do here in thy own country what we have heard were done at Capernaum."
24 And he said, Truly I say to you, that not one prophet is acceptable in his fatherland.
But, said He, indeed I must tell you, that no prophet is well received in his own country.
25 But in truth I say to you, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine occurred on all the land.
And I assure you, there were many widows in Israel, in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months, and there was a great famine through all the land;
26 And Elijah was sent to none of them, except to Zarephath, to a widow woman of Sidon.
but Elias was sent to none of those widows, but to a widow-woman at Sarepta in the territory of Sidon.
27 And many lepers were in Israel near Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian.
There were also many lepers in Israel, in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed; but Naaman the Syrian was.
28 And all in the synagogue were filled with rage, having heard these things.
And all the synagogue were filled with rage, when they heard these things,
29 And having risen up, they thrust him outside of the city, and brought him as far as the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw him down headlong.
and they rose up and drove Him out of the city, and dragged Him to the brow of the hill, on which their city was built, in order to throw Him down the precipice.
30 But he, having passed through the midst of them, departed.
But He passed through the midst of them, and went away.
31 And he came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the sabbath day,
And He came down to Capernaum a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath-days,
32 and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word was with authority.
and they were astonished at his doctrine; for He spake with authority.
33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean deity. And it cried out in a great voice, saying,
And there was a man in the synagogue possessed by the spirit of an impure demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,
34 Oh no! What is with us and with thee, Jesus of Nazareth? Did thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou are, the Holy man of God.
saying, Let us alone, what hast thou to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know who thou art, the holy one of God:
35 And Jesus rebuked it, saying, Be thou muzzled, and come out of him. And the demon having thrown him down in the midst, it came out of him, not having harm him.
but Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent, and come out of him. And the demon threw him down in the midst of the assembly, and came out of him, having done him no hurt.
36 And amazement developed in all, and they spoke among each other, saying, What is this word? Because with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.
And they were all amazed, and said one to another, What a speech is this? for with authority and power He commandeth the impure spirits, and they come out!
37 And a report about him went forth into every place of the region around.
And his fame spread all over the country round about.
38 And having arisen from the synagogue, he entered into the house of Simon. And Simon's mother-in-law was gripped by a great fever, and they besought him about her.
And He rose up and went out of the synagogue, and came into the house of Simon: now Simon's wife's mother had a violent fever, and they intreated Him on her behalf.
39 And having stood over her, he rebuked the fever. And it left her, and immediately after rising up, she served them.
And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever, and it left her: and immediately she arose and waited upon them.
40 And when the sun was setting, all, as many as had those who were incapacitated with various diseases, brought them to him. And having laid his hands on each one of them, he healed them.
And at sun-set all that had any persons sick of any diseases, brought them to Him: and He laid his hands on every one of them and healed them.
41 And also demons came out from many, crying out, and saying, Thou are the Christ, the Son of God. And rebuking them, he did not allow them to speak, because they knew him to be the Christ.
And demons also came out from many, crying out, Thou art the Messiah the Son of God. And He rebuked them, and suffered them not to say, that they knew Him to be the Christ.
42 And when it became day, having departed, he went to a desolate place. And the multitudes sought him, and they came to him, and were restraining him not depart from them.
And when the day was coming on, He went out and retired into a solitary place; and the people sought for Him, and came to Him, and would fain have detained Him, that He might not go from them.
43 But he said to them, I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because I was sent for this.
But He said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.
44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
So He went on preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
