< Luke 11 >

1 And it came to pass as he was in a certain place praying, that when he ceased, a certain man of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray as John also taught his disciples.
It happened he was praying in a certain place, and when he stopped, one of his disciples said to him, "Master, teach us how to pray, just as Johntaught his disciples."
2 And he said to them, When ye pray, say, Our Father in the heavens, hallowed be thy name. May thy kingdom come, may thy will happen on the earth as also in heaven.
So he said to them. "When you pray, say, "Father, hallowed be thy name; May thy kingdom come,
3 Give us our bread sufficient for each day.
"Give us day by day our bread for the coming day;
4 And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive every man who is indebted to us. And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
"Forgive us our sins; for we also forgive everyone who has offended us; "And bring us not into temptation."
5 And he said to them, Which of you will have a friend, and will go to him at midnight, and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves,
He also said to them. "Suppose you have a friend and you go to him, ‘My friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
6 since a friend arrived from the road to me, and I do not have what I would set before him,
"for a friend of mine is come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him.’
7 and that man from inside, having answered, would say, Do not cause toils for me. The door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I am not able, after getting up, to give thee?
"and he from indoors shall answer. ‘Do not pester me. The door is now closed, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot rise and give to you.’
8 I say to you, though he will not give him, after getting up, because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence, having awaken, he will give him as many as he needs.
"I tell you that, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his importunate persistence he will rise and give him whatever he needs.
9 And I say to you, ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and ye will find. Knock, and it will be opened.
"So I say to you. "Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you.
10 For every man who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
"For he that asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks the door shall be opened.
11 And which father of you, if the son will ask a loaf, will give him a stone, or also if a fish, in place of a fish will give him a serpent?
"What father is there among you who, if his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish will give him instead a serpent?
12 Or if he should ask for an egg, will he give him a scorpion?
"Or if he asks for an egg, will offer him a scorpion?
13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more the Father from heaven will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?
"If you give good gifts to your children, how much more shall the Father who is in heaven give the Holy spirit to those that ask him!"
14 And he was casting out a demon, and it was mute. And it happened when the demon was gone out, the mute man spoke. And the multitudes marveled,
Once he was casting out a dumb demon, and when the demon was gone out, the dumb man spoke, and the people wondered.
15 but some of them said, He casts out the demons by Beelzebub, ruler of the demons.
But some of them said, "It is by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that he cast out demons."
16 And others, challenging, sought from him a sign from the sky.
Others, tempting him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven.
17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, Every kingdom that was divided against itself is made desolate, and a house against a house falls.
He knew their intentions and said to them. "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste and house falls upon house.
18 And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom be made to stand? Because ye say that I cast out the demons by Beelzebub.
"And if Satan also is divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand?
19 And if I cast out the demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Because of this they will be your judges.
"Do you say that I am casting out demons by the power of Beelzebub? If I then am casting out demons by Beelzebub, by whom are your sons casting them out? They therefore shall be your judges.
20 But if by a finger of God I cast out the demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
"But if it is by the finger of God that I am casting out demons, then the kingdom of God is come upon you.
21 When the fully armed strong man guards his palace, the things possessed by him are in peace,
"When the strong man fully aroused keeps guard over his homestead, his property is undisturbed;
22 but when a stronger than he comes, after defeating him, he takes away his full armor in which he trusted, and divides his booty.
"but when the stronger man attacks him, he takes away from the strong armor in which he was trusting and divides up the spoil.
23 He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.
"He who is not for me is against me, and he who is not gathering with me is scattering.
24 When the unclean spirit departs out of the man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest. And not finding, it says, I will return to my house from where I came out.
"Whenever a foul spirit is gone out of a man, it roams through waterless places, in search of rest; but when it can find none, it says, ‘I will go back to the house which I have left.’
25 And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order.
When it comes and finds the house completely swept and garnished.
26 Then it goes, and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and having enter in, it dwells there. And the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.
"Then it goes off and fetches seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the last state of that man is worse than the first."
27 And it came to pass, as he said these things, a certain woman, having lifted up her voice out of the crowd, said to him, Blessed is the belly that bore thee, and the breasts that thou suckled.
It happened while he was saying this, that a certain woman out of the crowd shouted to him, saying, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breast that you have sucked."
28 But he said, Blessed rather, are those who hear the word of God, and keep it.
"No, rather," he answered, "blessed are those who listen to the word of God, and keep it."
29 And when the multitudes gathered together he began to say, This generation is evil. They seek a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah, the prophet.
When the crowd were beginning to throng about him he proceeded to say. "This is an evil generation! It seeks a sign, and there shall be no sign be given to it except the sign of Jonah;
30 For as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of man will be to this generation.
"for as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so shall the Son of man be to this generation.
31 The queen of the south will awake in the judgment with the men of this generation, and will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
"The queen of the South shall rise up in Judgement with the men of this generation, and shall condemn them; because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and lo, one greater than Solomon is here!
32 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, a greater than Jonah is here.
"The men of the Nineveh shall stand up in the judgment with his generation and shall condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and lo! one greater than Jonah is here!
33 And no man, having lit a lamp, puts it in a concealed place, nor under the bushel, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter in may see the light.
"When one lights a lamp he does not put it in a cellar nor under the bushel, but on a lamp-stand that those who enter may see the light.
34 The lamp of thy body is the eye. Therefore, when thine eye is sound, thy whole body is also bright, but when it is bad, thy body is also dark.
"The lamp of the body is your eye; when your eye is single then your whole body is full of light; but when it is evil your whole body is full of darkness.
35 Watch therefore the light in thee not be darkness.
"Look carefully! Perhaps that very light of yours is darkness.
36 If therefore thy whole body is bright, not having any part dark, the whole will be bright, as when the lamp illuminates thee by the radiance.
"If, however, your whole body is full of light, without having any part dark, it will be wholly radiant with light, as when the lamp illumines you with its bright rays."
37 Now as he spoke a certain Pharisee asks him that he might dine with him. And having entered in, he sat down.
When he had finished speaking a Pharisee asked him to dine with him; so he went in with him and reclined.
38 And when the Pharisee saw, he marveled that he did not first wash before dinner.
And the Pharisee noticed, to his amazement, that he did not wash his hands before eating,
39 And the Lord said to him, Now ye Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but your interior is full of plundering and wickedness.
but the Lord said to him. "You Pharisee do cleanse the outside of your cup or plate, but your secret heart is full of extortion and wickedness.
40 Ye foolish men, did not he who made the outside also make the inside?
"Foolish men! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also?
41 But give compassion, things that are inside, and behold, all things are clean to you.
"Better cleanse what is within, and nothing will be unclean for you.
42 But woe to you Pharisees! Because ye tithe mint and rue and every plant, and pass by justice and the love of God. It is necessary to do these things, and not to neglect those things.
"But woe unto you Pharisee! for you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and disregard justice and the love of God; but these you ought to have done, and not leave the other undone.
43 Woe to you Pharisees! Because ye love the place of honor in the synagogues, and the greetings in the marketplaces.
"Woe unto you Pharisee! for you delight in the best seats in the synagogue, and in the salutation in the market-places.
44 Woe to you scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because ye are like the unseen sepulchers, and the men who walk over them do not know.
"Woe unto you! for you are like the tombs which are hidden, and men walk over them unsuspecting."
45 And having answered, a certain man of the lawyers says to him, Teacher, in saying these things thou rebuke us also.
Hereupon one of the lawyers exclaimed, "But teacher, in saying such things you are also reproaching us also."
46 And he said, Woe also to you lawyers! Because ye load men with burdens difficult to bear, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.
"Woe unto you lawyers also!" said Jesus, "for you load men with irksome burdens, and you yourselves will not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.
47 Woe to you! Because ye build the sepulchers of the prophets, but your fathers killed them.
"Woe to you! for you are building the tombs of the prophets whom you ancestors killed.
48 Consequently, ye testify and approve the works of your fathers, because they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchers.
"So you are witnesses, and you consent to the actions of your ancestors. for they killed them, and you build their tombs.
49 Because of this also the wisdom of God said, I will send to them prophets and apostles. And some of them they will kill and persecute,
"For this reason also said the Wisdom of God. ‘I will send them prophets and apostles; some of them they will kill and some they will persecute;
50 so that the blood of all the prophets that was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation,
"so that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required from this generation,
51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I say to you, it will be required of this generation.
"from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the alter and the sanctuary; yes; I tell you, it shall be required of this generation!
52 Woe to you lawyers! Because ye took away the key of knowledge. Ye did not enter in yourselves, and ye hindered those who were entering in.
"Woe to you lawyers, for you have taken away the key of knowledge!’ You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who are trying to enter."
53 And after he said these things to them, the scholars and the Pharisees began to harass him extremely, and to provoke him to speak impulsively about more things,
After he had gone away, the Scribes and the Pharisee began to set themselves vehemently against him, and to cross-question him upon many points,
54 waiting to ambush him, seeking to catch something out of his mouth so that they might accuse him.
laying in wait for him, in order to catch a word from his lips.
