< Isaiah 64 >

1 Oh that thou would rend the heavens, that thou would come down, that the mountains might quake at thy presence,
Oh that you would rend the heavens, that you would come down, that the mountains might flow down at your presence,
2 as when fire kindles the brushwood, and the fire causes the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence!
As when the melting fire burns, the fire causes the waters to boil, to make your name known to your adversaries, that the nations may tremble at your presence!
3 When thou did fearful things which we did not look for, thou came down; the mountains quaked at thy presence.
When you did terrible things which we looked not for, you came down, the mountains flowed down at your presence.
4 For from of old men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither has the eye seen, O God, besides thee, what he has prepared for him who waits for him.
For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither has the eye seen, O God, beside you, what he has prepared for him that waits for him.
5 Thou meet him who rejoices and works righteousness, those who remember thee in thy ways. Behold, thou were angry, and we sinned. Therefore we have erred.
You meet him that rejoices and works righteousness, those that remember you in your ways: behold, you are angry; for we have sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved.
6 For we have all become as unclean, and all our righteous acts are as a polluted garment. And we all fade as a leaf. And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
7 And there is none who calls upon thy name, who stirs himself up to take hold of thee. For thou have hid thy face from us, and have consumed us through our iniquities.
And there is none that calls upon your name, that stirs up himself to take hold of you: for you have hid your face from us, and have consumed us, because of our iniquities.
8 But now, O Jehovah, thou are our Father. We are the clay, and thou our potter, and we are all the work of thy hand.
But now, O LORD, you are our father; we are the clay, and you our potter; and we all are the work of your hand.
9 Be not angry very severely, O Jehovah, nor remember iniquity forever. Behold, look, we beseech thee, we are all thy people.
Be not angry very sore, O LORD, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we plead to you, we are all your people.
10 Thy holy cities have become a wilderness. Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.
Your holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.
11 Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned with fire, and all our pleasant places are laid waste.
Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised you, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste.
12 Will thou restrain thyself for these things, O Jehovah? Will thou hold thy peace, and afflict us very severely?
Will you refrain yourself for these things, O LORD? will you hold your peace, and afflict us very sore?
