Mattheüs 26
1 Nadat Jesus al deze toespraken geëindigd had, zeide Hij tot zijn leerlingen:
And it came to pass, when Jesus ended all these words, he said unto his disciples:
2 Gij weet, dat het over twee dagen Pasen is; dan wordt de Mensenzoon overgeleverd, om gekruisigd te worden.
Ye know that, after two days, the passover, taketh place, —and, the Son of Man, is to be delivered up, to be crucified.
3 Toen vergaderden de opperpriesters en de oudsten van het volk in het paleis van den hogepriester, die Káifas heette.
Then, were gathered together, the High-priests and the Elders of the people, into the court of the High-priest who was called Caiaphas;
4 Ze beraadslaagden, om Jesus met list gevangen te nemen en Hem te doden.
and they took counsel together, in order that, Jesus, by guile, they might secure, and slay.
5 Maar ze zeiden: Niet op het feest; er mocht eens oproer komen onder het volk.
They were saying, however: Not during the feast, lest, an uproar, arise among the people.
6 Terwijl Jesus nu te Betánië was in het huis van Simon den melaatse,
But, Jesus, happening to be in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,
7 kwam er een vrouw naar Hem toe, die een albasten kruik vol kostbare balsem droeg; ze goot die uit over zijn hoofd, terwijl Hij aanlag aan tafel.
there came unto him a woman, holding an alabaster-jar of costly perfume, and she poured it down upon his head, as he was reclining.
8 Toen de leerlingen dit zagen, werden ze verontwaardigd en zeiden: Waarom die verkwisting?
And the disciples, seeing it, were greatly displeased, saying—To what end, this loss?
9 Men had dat toch duur kunnen verkopen, en het goed aan de armen kunnen geven.
For this could have been sold for much, and given to the destitute.
10 Jesus merkte het, en sprak: Waarom valt gij de vrouw lastig? Ze heeft immers een goed werk aan Mij gedaan.
But Jesus, taking note, said unto them—Why vex ye the woman? for, a seemly work, hath she wrought for me;
11 Want de armen hebt gij altijd bij u; Mij niet.
For, always, the destitute, have ye with you, —but, me, not always, have ye;
12 Toen ze die balsem uitgoot over mijn lichaam, deed ze dat voor mijn begrafenis.
For, she, pouring this perfume upon my body, so as to prepare me for burial, did it.
13 Voorwaar, Ik zeg u: overal in heel de wereld, waar dit Evangelie wordt gepreekt, zal ook tot hare gedachtenis worden vermeld, wat ze gedaan heeft.
Verily, I say unto you—Wheresoever this glad-message shall be proclaimed in all the world, also what she did, will be told, as a memorial of her.
14 Toen ging één van de twaalf, Judas Iskáriot genaamd, naar de opperpriesters,
Then, went one of the twelve, the one called Judas Iscariot, unto the High-priests,
15 en sprak: Wat wilt gij me geven, als ik Hem aan u overlever? Ze beloofden hem dertig zilverlingen.
and said—What are ye willing to give unto me? and, I, unto you, will deliver him up. And they appointed him thirty pieces of silver.
16 Van toen af zocht hij naar een gelegenheid, om Hem te verraden.
And, from that time, was he seeking a favourable opportunity that he might, deliver him up.
17 Op de eerste dag der ongedesemde broden kwamen de leerlingen bij Jesus, en zeiden: Waar wilt Gij, dat we U de toebereidselen maken, om het paasmaal te eten?
And, on the first of the days of unleavened bread, the disciples came unto Jesus, saying—Where wilt thou, that we make ready for thee to eat the passover?
18 Hij sprak: Gaat in de stad naar zeker iemand, en zegt hem: De Meester zegt: Mijn tijd is nabij; bij u houd Ik met mijn leerlingen het paasmaal.
And, he, said—Go your way into the city, unto such-a-one, and say to him, The teacher, saith, My season, is, near, with thee, will I keep the passover, with my disciples.
19 En de leerlingen deden zoals Jesus hun had gelast, en maakten het paasmaal gereed.
And the disciples did, as Jesus directed them, and made ready the passover.
20 Toen nu de avond was gevallen, lag Hij met zijn twaalf leerlingen aan tafel aan.
And, when, evening, came, he was reclining with the twelve [disciples];
21 En terwijl zij aten. zeide Hij: Voorwaar, Ik zeg u, één van u zal Mij verraden.
and, as they were eating, he said—Verily, I say unto you, One from among you, will deliver me up.
22 Nu werden ze diep bedroefd en vroegen Hem de een na den ander: Ben ik het, Heer?
And, being exceedingly grieved, they began to be saying to him, each one—Can it be, I, Lord?
23 Hij antwoordde: Wie de hand met Mij in de schotel steekt, die zal Mij verraden.
And, he, answering, said—He who hath dipped with me his hand in the bowl, the same, will deliver me up.
24 De Mensenzoon gaat wel heen, zoals van Hem geschreven staat; maar wee den mens, door wien de Mensenzoon zal worden verraden! Het zou beter voor hem zijn, zo hij niet was geboren, die mens!
The Son of Man, indeed, goeth his way, according as it is written concerning him, —But alas! for that man, through whom the Son of Man, is being delivered up: Well, had it been for him, if, that man, had not been born!
25 Toen nam Judas, die Hem verried, het woord en sprak: Ben ik het, Rabbi? Hij zei hem: Ge hebt het gezegd.
And Judas, who was delivering him up, answering, said—Can it be, I, Rabbi? He saith unto him—Thou, hast said.
26 Terwijl zij nu aten nam Jesus het brood, zegende het, brak het, gaf het zijn leerlingen en sprak: Neemt en eet, dit is mijn lichaam.
And, as they were eating, Jesus, taking a loaf and blessing, brake, —and, giving to his disciples, said—Take, eat! This, is, my body.
27 Daarna nam Hij de kelk, sprak een dankgebed uit, gaf hun de kelk, en zeide: Drinkt allen hieruit;
And, taking a cup, and giving thanks, he gave unto them, saying—Drink of it, all of you;
28 want dit is mijn bloed van het Nieuwe Verbond, dat wordt vergoten voor velen tot vergiffenis der zonden.
For, this, is my blood of the covenant, which, for many, is to be poured out, for remission of sins.
29 En Ik zeg u: Van nu af aan zal Ik deze vrucht van de wijnstok niet meer drinken, tot op de dag, waarop Ik ze hernieuwd met u zal drinken in het rijk van mijn Vader.
Moreover, I say unto you—In nowise, will I drink, henceforth, of this produce of the vine, until that day, whensoever I shall drink it with you, new, in the kingdom of my Father.
30 En nadat zij de lofzang hadden gezongen, gingen zij naar de Olijfberg.
And, having sung praise, they went forth unto the Mount of Olives.
31 Toen sprak Jesus tot hen: Deze nacht zult gij allen aan Mij worden geërgerd. Want er staat geschreven: "Ik zal den herder slaan, en de schapen der kudde zullen worden verstrooid."
Then, Jesus saith unto them—All ye, will find cause of stumbling in me, during this night; for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and, the sheep of the flock, will be scattered abroad;
32 Maar wanneer Ik verrezen zal zijn, zal Ik u voorgaan naar Galilea.
But, after my arising, I will go before you into Galilee.
33 Petrus antwoordde: Al werden ook allen aan U geërgerd. ik nooit!
Now Peter, answering, said unto him—Though, all, shall find cause of stumbling in thee, I, shall never find cause of stumbling.
34 Jesus sprak tot hem: Voorwaar, Ik zeg u: Nog deze nacht, eer er een haan heeft gekraaid, zult ge Mij driemaal verloochenen.
Jesus saith unto him: Verily, I say unto thee—During this night, before a cock crow, Thrice, wilt thou deny me.
35 Petrus zeide Hem: Al moest ik zelfs met U sterven, verloochenen zal Ik U niet. Zo spraken ook de andere leerlingen.
Peter saith unto him: Even though it be needful for me, with thee to die, in nowise, will I deny thee. Likewise, all the disciples also, said.
36 Toen kwam Jesus met hen bij een landgoed, Getsémani genaamd. Nu zei Hij tot de leerlingen: Zet u hier neer, terwijl Ik ginds ga bidden.
Then Jesus cometh with them, into a place called Gethsemane, —and he saith unto his disciples, Sit ye here, while I go yonder and pray.
37 Hij nam Petrus en de twee zonen van Zebedeüs met zich mee, en begon bedroefd en angstig te worden.
And, taking with him, Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be grieved and to be in great distress.
38 En Hij sprak tot hen: Mijn ziel is dodelijk bedroefd; blijft hier met Mij waken.
Then, saith he unto them: Encompassed with grief, is my soul, unto death: Abide ye here, and be watching with me.
39 Hij ging nog een weinig verder, viel biddend op zijn aangezicht neer, en sprak: Mijn Vader, indien het mogelijk is, laat deze kelk Mij voorbijgaan; maar niet zoals Ik wil, maar zoals Gij het wilt.
And, going forward a little, he fell upon his face, offering prayer, and saying—My Father! If it is possible, let this cup pass from me, —Nevertheless, not as, I, will, but as, thou, wilt.
40 Nu ging Hij naar zijn leerlingen terug, en vond ze in slaap. En Hij sprak tot Petrus: Kunt gij dan niet één uur met Mij waken?
And he cometh unto his disciples, and findeth them sleeping, and said unto Peter—Thus, powerless are ye, one hour, to watch with me?
41 Waakt en bidt, dat gij niet in bekoring komt. De geest is gewillig, maar het vlees is zwak.
Be watching and praying, that ye may not enter into temptation: The spirit, indeed, is, eager, but, the flesh, weak.
42 Opnieuw ging Hij heen, en bad: Mijn Vader, zo hij niet kan voorbijgaan, zonder dat Ik hem drink, dan geschiede Uw wil.
Again, a second time, departing he prayed, saying: My Father! If it is impossible for this to pass, except I, drink, it, Accomplished, be, thy will.
43 En weer kwam Hij terug, en vond ze in slaap; want hun ogen vielen toe.
And coming, he, again, found them sleeping, for their eyes had become heavy.
44 Nogmaals verliet Hij hen en ging heen, en bad voor de derde maal met dezelfde woorden.
And, leaving them, he, again, departed, and prayed a third time, the same word, saying again.
45 Toen kwam Hij bij zijn leerlingen terug, en sprak tot hen: Slaapt nu voort, en rust uit; ziet, het uur is genaderd, waarop de Mensenzoon zal worden overgeleverd in de handen der zondaars.
Then, cometh he unto the disciples, and saith unto them, —Ye are sleeping what time remaineth, and taking your rest: Lo! the hour hath drawn near, and, the Son of Man, is being delivered up into the hands of sinners.
46 Staat op, laat ons gaan; ziet, hij die Mij verraadt, is nabij.
Arise! let us be going, —Lo! he that delivereth me up, hath drawn near.
47 Terwijl Hij nog sprak, zie, daar kwam Judas, één van de twaalf, vergezeld van een grote bende, met zwaarden en stokken, uitgezonden door de opperpriesters en de oudsten van het volk.
And, while, yet, he was speaking, lo! Judas, one of the twelve, came, and, with him, a large multitude, with swords and clubs, from the High-priests and Elders of the people.
48 De verrader had hun een teken gegeven en gezegd: Dien ik zal kussen. Hij is het; grijpt Hem vast.
And, he who was delivering him up, gave them a sign, saying—Whomsoever I shall kiss, he, it is, —secure him.
49 Haastig liep hij op Jesus toe, en sprak: Wees gegroet, Rabbi. En hij kuste Hem.
And, straightway, coming unto Jesus, he said—Joy to thee! Rabbi, and eagerly kissed him.
50 Maar Jesus zeide hem: Vriend, waartoe zijt ge gekomen? Nu kwamen ze toegelopen, sloegen de hand aan Jesus, en grepen Hem vast.
But, Jesus, said unto him—Friend! wherefore art thou here? Then, coming forward, they thrust their hands upon Jesus, and secured him.
51 En zie, een van Jesus’ gezellen strekte de hand uit, trok zijn zwaard, trof den knecht van den hogepriester, en sloeg hem het oor af.
And lo! one of those with Jesus, stretching forth his hand, grasped his sword, and smiting the servant of the High-priest, cut off his ear.
52 Jesus sprak tot hem: Steek uw zwaard op zijn plaats; want allen, die het zwaard trekken, zullen omkomen door het zwaard.
Then, Jesus saith unto him—Put back thy sword into its place, for, all they who take a sword, by a sword, shall perish.
53 Of meent ge, dat mijn Vader Mij niet aanstonds meer dan twaalf legioenen engelen zou zenden, als Ik Hem daarom bad.
Or thinkest thou that I cannot call upon my Father, and he will set near me, even now, more than twelve legions of messengers?
54 Maar hoe zullen dan de Schriften worden vervuld, die zeggen, dat het zó moet geschieden?
How then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that, thus, it must needs come to pass?
55 Nu sprak Jesus tot de bende: Gij zijt uitgetrokken als tegen een rover, met zwaarden en stokken, om Mij gevangen te nemen; dag aan dag zat Ik in de tempel te leren, en gij hebt Mij niet gegrepen.
In that hour, said Jesus unto the multitudes: As against a robber, came ye forth, with swords and clubs, to arrest me? Daily in the temple, used I to sit teaching, and ye secured me not;
56 Maar dit alles is geschied, opdat de Schriften der profeten zouden worden vervuld. Toen verlieten Hem al zijn leerlingen, en namen de vlucht.
But, this, hath, wholly, come to pass, that, the Scriptures of the prophets, may be fulfilled. Then, the disciples, all forsaking him, fled.
57 Zij, die Jesus hadden gegrepen, voerden Hem weg naar Káifas den hogepriester, waar de schriftgeleerden en oudsten waren vergaderd.
And, they who secured Jesus, led him away unto Caiaphas the High-priest, where the Scribes and the Elders gathered themselves together.
58 Petrus volgde Hem van verre, tot in de voorhof van den hogepriester; hij trad er binnen, en zette zich bij de dienaars neer, om de afloop te zien.
Now, Peter, was following him afar off, unto the court of the High-priest, —and, entering within, was sitting with the attendants, to see the end.
59 De opperpriesters en heel de Hoge Raad zochten naar een valse aanklacht tegen Jesus, om Hem ter dood te brengen.
Now, the High-priests and all the High-council, were seeking false-witness against Jesus, that they might, put him to death;
60 Maar ze vonden niets, ofschoon er veel valse getuigen waren gekomen. Eindelijk traden er twee naar voren,
and found not any, though many came forward as false-witnesses. At length, however, there came forward, two,
61 die zeiden: Hij heeft gezegd: Ik kan Gods tempel afbreken, en binnen drie dagen weer opbouwen.
and said: This, man said—I am able to pull down the shrine of God, and, in three days, to, build, it.
62 Toen stond de hogepriester op, en zeide: Antwoordt Gij niets op wat ze tegen U getuigen?
And the High-priest, arising, said unto him—Nothing, answerest thou? What are these, against thee bearing witness?
63 Maar Jesus zweeg. Nu sprak de hogepriester tot Hem: Ik bezweer U bij den levenden God, dat Gij ons zegt, of Gij de Christus zijt, de Zoon van God.
But, Jesus, was silent. And, the High-priest, said unto him: I put thee on oath, by the Living God, that, to us, thou say—Whether, thou, art the Christ, the Son of God.
64 Jesus zeide hem: Ge hebt het gezegd. Maar Ik zeg ú: Van nu af aan zult gij den Mensenzoon gezeten zien aan de rechterhand van de Kracht, en Hem zien komen op de wolken des hemels.
Jesus saith unto him: Thou, hast said; Moreover, I say unto you—Hereafter, ye will see the Son of Man, sitting on the right hand of power, and coming upon the clouds of heaven.
65 Toen scheurde de hogepriester zijn klederen, en zeide: Hij heeft God gelasterd; wat hebben we nog getuigen nodig? Ziet, nu hebt gij de godslastering gehoord.
Then, the High-priest rent asunder his garments, saying—He hath spoken profanely! What further need have we, of witnesses? Lo! now, ye have heard the profanity!
66 Wat dunkt u? En ze antwoordden: Hij is des doods schuldig.
How, to you, doth it seem? And, they, answering, said: Guilty of death, he is.
67 Toen spuwden ze Hem in het gelaat, en gaven Hem vuistslagen; anderen sloegen Hem in het aangezicht,
Then, spat they into his face, and buffeted him; and, others, struck him smartly,
68 en zeiden: Profeteer ons Christus: wie heeft U geslagen?
saying—Prophesy unto us, O Christ! Who is he that struck thee?
69 Petrus dan zat buiten in de voorhof. Een dienstmeisje kwam naar hem toe, en zeide: Ook gij waart met Jesus, den Galileër.
Now, Peter, was sitting without, in the court; and there came unto him a certain female servant, saying—Thou also, wast with Jesus, the Galilaean.
70 Doch hij loochende het ten aanhoren van allen, en sprak: Ik begrijp niet wat ge zegt.
But, he, denied before all, saying—I know not what thou sayest.
71 Maar toen hij wegging naar de poort, zag hem een ander dienstmeisje, en ze sprak tot de aanwezigen: Ook deze was bij Jesus, den Nazarener.
And, when he went out into the porch, another female saw him, and said unto them who were there—This, one was with Jesus the Nazarene.
72 Nog eens loochende hij het met een eed: Ik ken den mens niet.
And, again, he denied, with an oath—I know not the man.
73 Kort daarna kwamen de omstanders naar Petrus toe, en zeiden hem: Zeker, ook gij zijt er een van; zelfs uw spraak doet u herkennen.
And, after a little, the by-standers, coming forward, said unto Peter: Truly, thou also, art, from among them, for, thy very speech, maketh thee, manifest.
74 Nu begon hij te vloeken en te zweren: Ik ken den mens niet. En aanstonds kraaide een haan.
Then, began he to be cursing and swearing—I know not the man! And, straightway, a cock crowed.
75 Toen dacht Petrus aan het woord, dat Jesus had gesproken: Eer er een haan heeft gekraaid, zult ge Mij drie maal verloochenen. En hij ging naar buiten, en weende bitter.
And Peter was put in mind of the declaration of Jesus, of his having said—Before a cock crow, thrice, wilt thou utterly deny me; and, going forth outside, he wept bitterly.
