1 Toen zongen Debora en Barak, de zoon van Abinóam:
And Debbora and Barac son of Abineem sang in that day, saying,
2 Toen men in Israël de haren liet groeien, Jahweh’s volk zich aanbood ten strijd,
A revelation was made in Israel when the people were made willing: Praise you the Lord.
3 Hoort koningen, Luistert vorsten: Ik wil zingen ter ere van Jahweh, Spelen voor Jahweh, Israëls God.
Hear, you kings, and listen, rulers: I will sing, it is I [who will sing] to the Lord, it is I, I will sing a psalm to the Lord the god of Israel.
4 Jahweh, toen Gij uittoogt uit Seïr, Wegtrokt van Edoms veld, Sidderde de aarde, en beefde de hemel, Sloegen de wolken in regen neer.
O Lord, in your going forth on Seir, when you went forth out of the land of Edom, the earth quaked and the heaven dropped dews, and the clouds dropped water.
5 Schokten de bergen voor Jahweh, Voor Jahweh, Israëls God.
The mountains were shaken before the face of the Lord Eloi, this Sina before the face of the Lord God of Israel.
6 In de dagen van Sjamgar, den zoon van Anat, In de dagen van Jaël, trokken geen karavanen uit; En die op reis gingen, Sloegen zijpaden in.
In the days of Samegar son of Anath, in the days of Jael, they deserted the ways, and went in by-ways; they went in crooked paths.
7 De leiders ontbraken, In Israël was er niet één: Tot gij opstondt, Debora, Tot gij opstondt, moeder in Israël!
The mighty men in Israel failed, they failed until Debbora arose, until she arose a mother in Israel.
8 Omdat men zich nieuwe goden had gekozen, Was het brood uit de poorten verdwenen, Werd schild noch lans meer bespeurd Voor de veertig duizend in Israël.
They chose new gods; then the cities of rulers fought; there was not a shield or spear seen amongst forty thousand in Israel.

My heart [inclines] to the orders given in Israel; you that are willing amongst the people, bless the Lord.
10 Die gevlekte ezelinnen berijden, Op tapijten gezeten. Die te voet gaat langs de weg, jubelt het uit,
You that mount a she-ass at noon-day, you that sit on the judgement-seat, and walk by the roads of them that sit in judgement by the way; declare
11 Onder het juichen van die bij de drinkbakken staan, Waar men Jahweh’s gerechte daden bezingt, Zijn rechtvaardige leiding in Israël.
[you that are delivered] from the noise of disturbers amongst the drawers of water; there shall they relate righteous acts: O Lord, increase righteous acts in Israel: then the people of the Lord went down to the cities.
12 Op, Debora; op, met uw lied; Doe het volk oprijzen bij duizenden! Op, Barak, in uw kracht; Boei, die u boeiden, Abinóams zoon!
Awake, awake, Debbora; awake, awake, utter a song: arise, Barac, and lead your captivity captive, son of Abineem.
13 Daar daalt de rest der dapperen af, Jahweh’s volk komt af met zijn helden:
Then went down the remnant to the strong, the people of the Lord went down for him amongst the mighty ones from me.
14 Aanvoerders uit Efraïm staan in de vlakte, Uw broeder Benjamin onder uw drommen. Uit Makir komen de leiders aan, Uit Zabulon die de bevelstaf zwaaien;
Ephraim rooted them out in Amalec, behind you was Benjamin amongst your people: the inhabitants of Machir came down with me searching out the enemy, and from Zabulon came they that draw with the scribe's pen of record.
15 Issakars vorsten vergezellen Debora, Nu Barak zijn voetvolk de valleien injaagt. Maar aan Rubens beken Zijn de angsten des harten geweldig.
And princess in Issachar were with Debbora and Barac, thus she sent Barac on his feet in the valleys into the portions of Ruben; great [pangs] reached to the heart.
16 Waarom blijft ge tussen de omheiningen zitten, Luisterend naar het fluiten der herders?
Why did they sit between the sheepfolds to hear the bleating of flocks for the divisions of Ruben? [there were] great searchings of heart.
17 Gilad dommelt aan de overkant van de Jordaan, Dan houdt zich bij zijn schepen op; Aser blijft zitten aan het strand van de zee, Ingesluimerd aan zijn baaien.
Galaad [is] on the other side of Jordan where he pitched his tents; and why does Dan remain in ships? Aser sat down on the sea-coasts, and he will tabernacle at his ports.
18 Maar Zabulon is een volk, dat zijn leven waagt, En de dood durft trotseren; Evenals Neftali, Dat op de hoogvlakten woont.
The people Zabulon exposed their soul to death, and Nephthali came to the high places of their land.
19 Daar kwamen de koningen, in slagorde geschaard, Daar streden de koningen van Kanaän Bij Taänak, aan het water van Megiddo; Maar een buit van zilver behaalden ze niet.
Kings set themselves in array, then the kings of Chanaan fought in Thanaach at the water of Mageddo; they took no gift of money.
20 Uit de hemel hebben de sterren de strijd aangebonden, Van haar banen uit gestreden, Tegen Sisera gevochten:
The stars from heaven set themselves in array, they set themselves [to fight] with Sisara out of their paths.
21 En de stromende Kisjon sleurde ze mee. De oeroude beek, de beek Kisjon Vertrapte de lijken der helden;
The brook of Kison swept them away, the ancient brook, the brook Kison: my mighty soul will trample him down.
22 Daar stampten de hoeven der paarden Door het angstig gejaag zijner dapperen.
When the hoofs of the horse were entangled, his mighty ones earnestly hasted
23 Vervloekt Meroz, sprak de engel van Jahweh, Vervloekt zijn bewoners; Omdat zij Jahweh niet te hulp zijn gesneld, Met hun dapperen Jahweh niet hielpen!
to curse Meroz: Curse you [it], said the angel of the Lord; cursed [is] every one that dwells in it, because they came not to the help of the Lord, to his help amongst the mighty.
24 Maar gezegend zij Jaël onder de vrouwen, Gezegend onder haar, die in tenten verblijven;
Blessed amongst women be Jael wife of Chaber the Kenite; let her be blessed above women in tents.
25 Water vraagt hij, ze geeft hem melk, In een vorstelijke schaal brengt ze hem room.
He asked for water, she gave him milk in a dish; she brought butter of princes.
26 Met de ene hand grijpt ze de tentpin, Met haar rechter een timmermanshamer; Ze treft Sisera, verbrijzelt zijn hoofd, Vermorzelt en doorboort zijn slapen.
She stretched forth her left hand to the nail, and her right to the hand workman's hammer, and she struck Sisara with it, she nailed through his head and struck him; she nailed through his temples.
27 Aan haar voeten heeft hij zich uitgestrekt, Aan haar voeten is hij in slaap gevallen; Doch waar hij zich neerlegt, Ligt hij nu dood.
He rolled down between her feet; he fell and lay between her feet; he bowed and fell: where he bowed, there he fell dead.
28 Aan het venster door de tralies Tuurt en weeklaagt Sisera’s moeder: Waarom laat zijn strijdkar nog steeds op zich wachten; Waarom rollen zijn wagens zo langzaam aan?
The mother of Sisara looked down through the window out of the loophole, [saying], Why was his chariot ashamed? why did the wheels of his chariots wait?
29 De wijste harer edelvrouwen geeft haar ten antwoord, Wat ze reeds bij zichzelf had bedacht:
Her wise ladies answered her, and she returned answers to herself, [saying],
30 Ze hebben buit gevonden, die ze moeten verdelen; Eén, twee slavinnen voor iederen held! Buit: bonte kleren voor Sisera; Buit: bonte kleurige doeken; Een, twee bonte doeken Als buit voor zijn hals.
Will they not find him dividing the spoil? he will surely be gracious to every man: [there are] spoils of dyed garments for Sisara, spoils of various dyed garments, dyed embroidered garments, they [are] the spoils for his neck.
31 Zo mogen omkomen Al uw vijanden, Jahweh! Maar die U liefhebben Mogen zijn als de opgang der zon in haar kracht! En het land genoot veertig jaar lang rust.
Thus let all your enemies perish, O Lord: and they that love him shall be as the going forth of the sun in his strength. And the land had rest forty years.
