2 Koningen 4
1 Eens riep de vrouw van een der profetenzonen Eliseus, en zei: Uw dienaar, mijn man, is gestorven; gij weet, dat uw dienaar godvrezend was. En nu komt een schuldeiser mijn twee jongens halen, om er slaven van te maken.
And a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets hath cried unto Elisha, saying, 'Thy servant, my husband, is dead, and thou hast known that thy servant was fearing Jehovah, and the lender hath come to take my two children to him for servants.'
2 Eliseus sprak tot haar: Wat kan ik voor u doen? Zeg mij eens: Wat hebt ge in huis? Zij zeide: Uw dienares heeft niets anders in huis dan een kruik olie.
And Elisha saith unto her, 'What do I do for thee? declare to me, what hast thou in the house?' and she saith, 'Thy maid-servant hath nothing in the house except a pot of oil.'
3 Toen sprak hij: Ga bij al uw buren lege vaten vragen, maar vooral niet te weinig.
And he saith, 'Go, ask for thee vessels from without, from all thy neighbours — empty vessels — let [them] not be few;
4 Dan moet ge naar huis gaan, en de deur achter u en uw jongens sluiten. Giet dan olie in al die vaten, en zet de volle op zij.
and thou hast entered, and shut the door upon thee, and upon thy sons, and hast poured out into all these vessels, and the full ones thou dost remove.'
5 Nadat ze van hem was weggegaan, sloot ze de deur achter zich en haar jongens, en terwijl dezen de vaten aanreikten, bleef zij ze maar vol gieten.
And she goeth from him, and shutteth the door upon her, and upon her sons; they are bringing nigh unto her, and she is pouring out,
6 Toen de vaten vol waren, zei ze tot haar zoon: Geef me nog een ander vat. Maar hij antwoordde haar: Er is geen meer. En nu hield de olie op met vloeien.
and it cometh to pass, at the filling of the vessels, that she saith unto her son, 'Bring nigh unto me a vessel more,' and he saith unto her, 'There is not a vessel more;' and the oil stayeth.
7 Ze ging het aan den godsman vertellen, en deze sprak: Ga de olie verkopen en uw schuld betalen; van het overschot kunt ge met uw zonen leven.
And she cometh and declareth to the man of God, and he saith, 'Go, sell the oil, and repay thy loan; and thou [and] thy sons do live of the rest.'
8 Toen Eliseus op zekere dag te Sjoenem kwam, werd hij daar door een voorname vrouw aan tafel genodigd. En wanneer hij in het vervolg daar voorbijkwam, ging hij er altijd heen, om te eten.
And the day cometh that Elisha passeth over unto Shunem, and there [is] a great woman, and she layeth hold on him to eat bread, and it cometh to pass, at the time of his passing over, he turneth aside thither to eat bread,
9 Daarom zei de vrouw tot haar man: Zie eens; ik heb gemerkt, dat de gast, die altijd bij ons komt, een heilige godsman is.
and she saith unto her husband, 'Lo, I pray thee, I have known that a holy man of God he is, passing over by us continually;
10 Laat ons boven een klein kamertje voor hem inrichten, en er een bed, een tafel, een stoel en een lamp neerzetten; dan kan hij daar zijn intrek nemen, wanneer hij bij ons komt.
let us make, I pray thee, a little upper chamber of the wall, and we set for him there a bed, and a table, and a high seat, and a candlestick; and it hath been, in his coming in unto us, he doth turn aside thither.'
11 Toen Eliseus dus op zekere dag weer aankwam, kon hij de bovenkamer betrekken en ging er rusten.
And the day cometh, that he cometh in thither, and turneth aside unto the upper chamber, and lieth there,
12 Daarna beval hij zijn dienaar Gechazi: Roep de Sjoenamietische. Hij riep haar, en ze kwam bij hem.
and he saith unto Gehazi his young man, 'Call for this Shunammite;' and he calleth for her, and she standeth before him.
13 Te voren had Eliseüs al tot Gechazi gezegd, haar te vragen: Ge hebt nu zo uitstekend voor ons gezorgd; wat kunnen wij nu voor u doen? Misschien een goed woordje bij den koning of bij den legeroverste? Maar ze had geantwoord: Ik woon te midden van mijn volk.
And he saith to him, 'Say, I pray thee, unto her, Lo, thou hast troubled thyself concerning us with all this trouble; what — to do for thee? is it to speak for thee unto the king, or unto the head of the host?' and she saith, 'In the midst of my people I am dwelling.'
14 Hierop had hij aan Gechazi gevraagd: Maar kunnen we dan helemaal niets voor haar doen? En deze had geantwoord: Wel zeker; ze heeft geen zoon, en haar man is oud.
And he saith, 'And what — to do for her?' and Gehazi saith, 'Verily she hath no son, and her husband [is] aged.'
15 Toen had Eliseüs gezegd: Roep haar. Zo was Gechazi haar gaan roepen, en nu stond ze aan de deur.
And he saith, 'Call for her;' and he calleth for her, and she standeth at the opening,
16 En Eliseus sprak: Het volgend jaar om deze tijd drukt ge een zoon aan uw hart. Ze antwoordde: Neen heer; man Gods, misleid uw dienares toch niet.
and he saith, 'At this season, according to the time of life, thou art embracing a son;' and she saith, 'Nay, my lord, O man of God, do not lie unto thy maid-servant.'
17 Maar de vrouw werd zwanger, en het volgende jaar om dezelfde tijd baarde zij een zoon, zoals Eliseus voorspeld had.
And the woman conceiveth and beareth a son, at this season, according to the time of life, that Elisha spake of unto her.
18 Toen de jongen wat groter geworden was, ging hij eens met zijn vader mee naar de maaiers.
And the lad groweth, and the day cometh that he goeth out unto his father, unto the reapers,
19 Daar riep hij opeens tot zijn vader: Mijn hoofd, mijn hoofd! Deze zei tot een knecht: Neem hem op, en breng hem bij zijn moeder.
and he saith unto his father, 'My head, my head;' and he saith unto the young man, 'Bear him unto his mother;'
20 De knecht nam hem op, en bracht hem bij zijn moeder. Tot de middag lag hij op haar schoot; toen stierf hij.
and he beareth him, and bringeth him in unto his mother, and he sitteth on her knees till the noon, and dieth.
21 Nu ging zij naar boven, legde hem op het bed van den godsman, en deed de deur achter hem toe. Toen liep ze naar buiten,
And she goeth up, and layeth him on the bed of the man of God, and shutteth [the door] upon him, and goeth out,
22 riep haar man en zei: Stuur me een van de knechts met een ezelin; ik wil dadelijk naar den godsman, en kom gauw terug.
and calleth unto her husband, and saith, 'Send, I pray thee, to me, one of the young men, and one of the asses, and I run unto the man of God, and return.'
23 Hij zei: Waarom gaat ge nu vandaag naar hem toe? Het is toch geen nieuwe maan of sabbat. Maar ze antwoordde: Tot ziens!
And he saith, 'Wherefore art thou going unto him to-day? — neither new moon nor sabbath!' and she saith, 'Peace [to thee]!'
24 Ze zadelde de ezelin, en beval den knecht: Drijf ze maar gedurig aan en houd nergens stil, tenzij ik het u zeg.
And she saddleth the ass, and saith unto her young man, 'Lead, and go, do not restrain riding for me, except I have said [so] to thee.'
25 Zo ging ze op weg, en begaf zich naar den godsman op de berg Karmel. Toen de godsman haar in de verte zag aankomen, zei hij tot zijn dienaar Gechazi: Daar is die Sjoenamietische.
And she goeth, and cometh in unto the man of God, unto the hill of Carmel, and it cometh to pass, at the man of God's seeing her from over-against, that he saith unto Gehazi his young man, 'Lo, this Shunammite;
26 Ga haar tegemoet, en vraag haar, hoe het gaat met haarzelf, haar man en haar kind. Zij antwoordde: Goed.
now, run, I pray thee, to meet her, and say to her, Is there peace to thee? is there peace to thy husband? is there peace to the lad?' and she saith, 'Peace.'
27 Maar toen ze bij den godsman op de berg was gekomen, omklemde ze zijn voeten. Gechazi trachtte haar weg te duwen, maar de godsman sprak: Laat haar begaan, want ze is diep bedroefd; Jahweh houdt het voor mij verborgen, en heeft het mij niet geopenbaard.
And she cometh in unto the man of God, unto the hill, and layeth hold on his feet, and Gehazi cometh nigh to thrust her away, and the man of God saith, 'Let her alone, for her soul [is] bitter to her, and Jehovah hath hidden [it] from me, and hath not declared [it] to me.'
28 Nu sprak zij: Heer, heb ik u soms om een zoon gevraagd? Heb ik u niet gezegd: Misleid mij toch niet!
And she saith, 'Did I ask a son from my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me?'
29 Toen beval hij Gechazi: Omgord uw lenden, neem mijn staf in de hand, en ga hem op den jongen leggen; en als ge iemand ontmoet, groet hem niet, en wanneer men u groet, antwoord dan niet.
And he saith to Gehazi, 'Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thy hand, and go; when thou dost meet a man, thou dost not salute him; and when a man doth salute thee, thou dost not answer him; and thou hast laid my staff on the face of the youth.'
30 Maar de moeder van den jongen zei: Zo waar Jahweh leeft en bij uw leven; ik verlaat u niet. Toen stond hij zelf op, en ging met haar mee.
And the mother of the youth saith, 'Jehovah liveth, and thy soul liveth — if I leave thee;' and he riseth and goeth after her.
31 Gechazi, die hun vooruit was gegaan, legde de staf op den knaap; maar deze gaf geen geluid of teken van leven. Daarom keerde hij terug. En toen hij Eliseus tegenkwam, zei hij hem: De jongen is niet ontwaakt.
And Gehazi hath passed on before them, and layeth the staff on the face of the youth, and there is no voice, and there is no attention, and he turneth back to meet him, and declareth to him, saying, 'The youth hath not awaked.'
32 Nu trad Eliseus het huis binnen, en zag den jongen dood op zijn bed liggen.
And Elisha cometh in to the house, and lo, the youth is dead, laid on his bed,
33 Hij ging de kamer in, deed de deur achter hen beiden toe, en bad tot Jahweh.
and he goeth in and shutteth the door upon them both, and prayeth unto Jehovah.
34 Daarna strekte hij zich uit op het kind, en legde de mond op zijn mond, de ogen op zijn ogen, en de handen op zijn handen. Zo bleef hij op hem uitgestrekt, totdat het lichaam van het kind warm was geworden.
And he goeth up, and lieth down on the lad, and putteth his mouth on his mouth, and his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands, and stretcheth himself upon him, and the flesh of the lad becometh warm;
35 Toen liep hij eenmaal in huis op en neer, ging weer naar boven, en strekte zich nogmaals op hem uit. Nu begon de jongen te niezen, tot zeven maal toe, en eindelijk deed hij zijn ogen open.
and he turneth back and walketh in the house, once hither and once thither, and goeth up and stretcheth himself upon him, and the youth sneezeth till seven times, and the youth openeth his eyes.
36 Eliseus riep Gechazi en sprak: Roep de Sjoenamietische. Hij riep haar, en ze kwam. En Eliseus zeide tot haar: Hier hebt ge uw zoon.
And he calleth unto Gehazi, and saith, 'Call unto this Shunammite;' and he calleth her, and she cometh in unto him, and he saith, 'Lift up thy son.'
37 Ze liep naar hem toe, zonk neer aan zijn voeten, en boog zich diep ter aarde; daarna nam ze haar kind op en ging heen.
And she goeth in, and falleth at his feet, and boweth herself to the earth, and lifteth up her son, and goeth out.
38 Terwijl er in het land hongersnood heerste, kwam Eliseus weer eens naar Gilgal. En toen de profetenzonen bij hem zaten, beval hij zijn dienaar: Zet de grote pot op, en kook wat moes voor de profetenzonen.
And Elisha hath turned back to Gilgal, and the famine [is] in the land, and the sons of the prophets are sitting before him, and he saith to his young man, 'Set on the great pot, and boil pottage for the sons of the prophets.'
39 Daarom ging er iemand het veld in, om groenten te zoeken. Hij vond een slingerplant op het veld, en plukte daarvan wilde komkommers, zijn mantel vol. Thuis gekomen, sneed hij ze in de pot met moes; want hij kende ze niet.
And one goeth out unto the field to gather herbs, and findeth a vine of the field, and gathereth of it gourds of the field — the fulness of his garment — and cometh in and splitteth [them] into the pot of pottage, for they knew [them] not;
40 Nu schepte men voor de mannen op; maar nauwelijks waren ze van de moes aan het eten, of ze schreeuwden het uit: Man Gods, de dood is in de pot! En ze durfden er niet meer van eten.
and they pour out for the men to eat, and it cometh to pass at their eating of the pottage, that they have cried out, and say, 'Death [is] in the pot, O man of God!' and they have not been able to eat.
41 Maar Eliseus sprak: Haal wat meel! Dit wierp hij in de pot, en sprak: Schep nu op voor het volk, en laat ze er rustig van eten. En werkelijk, er was niets schadelijks meer in de pot.
And he saith, 'Then bring ye meal;' and he casteth into the pot, and saith, 'Pour out for the people, and they eat;' and there was no evil thing in the pot.
42 Eens kwam er iemand uit Báal-Sjalisja, die voor den godsman twintig gerstebroden als eerstelingenbrood en een zak vers koren had meegebracht. Eliseus beval: Geef het aan het volk te eten.
And a man hath come from Baal-Shalishah, and bringeth in to the man of God bread of first-fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in its husk, and he saith, 'Give to the people, and they eat.'
43 Zijn dienaar antwoordde: Hoe kan ik dit nu aan honderd man voorzetten? Maar Eliseus hernam: Geef het aan het volk te eten; want zo spreekt Jahweh! Ge zult eten, en nog overhouden.
And his minister saith, 'What — do I give this before a hundred men?' and he saith, 'Give to the people, and they eat, for thus said Jehovah, Eat and leave;'
44 Nu zette hij het hun voor; en toen ze gegeten hadden, hielden ze nog over, zoals Jahweh gezegd had.
and he giveth before them, and they eat and leave, according to the word of Jehovah.
