1 Samuël 13

1 Saul was 1 jaar oud, toen hij koning werd, en… jaar regeerde hij over Israël.

And Saul chooses for himself three thousand men of the men of Israel: and there were with Saul two thousand who were in Machmas, and in mount Baethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gabaa of Benjamin: and he sent the rest of the people every man to his tent.

2 Saul koos drieduizend Israëlieten uit, van wie er tweeduizend bij hem in Mikmas en het gebergte van Betel bleven, en duizend bij Jonatan in Giba van Benjamin; de rest van het volk stuurde hij naar zijn woonplaatsen terug.

3 Daar Jonatan den Filistijnsen stadhouder in Giba doodde, vernamen de Filistijnen, dat de Hebreën waren afgevallen en dat Saul over heel het land de krijgstrompet had doen blazen.

And Jonathan smote Nasib the Philistine that dwelt in the hill; and the Philistines hear of it, and Saul sounds the trumpet through all the land, saying, The servants have despised [us].

4 Maar ook heel Israël hoorde, dat Saul den Filistijnsen stadhouder gedood had, en dat Israël zich de haat van de Filistijnen op de hals had gehaald; waarop het volk zich achter Saul en Jonatan in Gilgal schaarde.

And all Israel heard say, Saul has smitten Nasib the Philistine; now Israel had been put to shame before the Philistines; and the children of Israel went up after Saul in Galgala.

5 Ook de Filistijnen verenigden zich tot de aanval op Israël; ze hadden drieduizend wagens, zesduizend ruiters, en een voetvolk zo talrijk als het zand aan het strand van de zee. Ze trokken uit, en sloegen hun kamp op bij Mikmas, ten oosten van Bet-Awen.

And the Philistines gather together to war with Israel; and then come up against Israel thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand by the seashore for multitude: and they come up, and encamp in Machmas, opposite Baethoron southward.

6 De Israëlieten begrepen, dat het er slecht voor hen uitzag, en dat het volk het zwaar te verduren zou krijgen. Ze kropen weg in grotten, spelonken, rotsspleten, ravijnen en putten,

And the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait so that they could not draw nigh, and the people hid themselves in caves, and sheepfolds, and rocks, and ditches, and pits.

7 of trokken de Jordaan-wedden over naar de landstreek Gad en Gilad. Saul bevond zich nog in Gilgal, ofschoon heel het volk uit angst van hem wegliep.

And they that went over went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Galaad: and Saul was yet in Galgala, and all the people followed after him in amazement.

8 Hij wachtte zeven dagen, volgens de termijn, die Samuël had gesteld. Maar toen Samuël niet in Gilgal kwam en het volk van hem wegliep,

And he continued seven days for the appointed testimony, as Samuel told him, and Samuel came not to Galgala, and his people were dispersed from him.

9 beval Saul: Breng mij het brandoffer en de vredeoffers. En zelf droeg hij het brandoffer op.

And Saul said, Bring hither [victims], that I may offer whole-burnt-offerings and peace-offerings: and he offered the whole-burnt-offering.

10 Juist had hij het offer opgedragen, of daar kwam Samuël aan. Saul ging hem tegemoet, om hem te begroeten.

And it came to pass when he had finished offering the whole-burnt-offering, that Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet him, [and] to bless him.

11 Maar Samuël vroeg: Wat hebt ge gedaan? Saul antwoordde: Wel, ik bemerkte, dat het volk van mij wegliep. En daar gij niet op de afgesproken tijd kwaamt, en de Filistijnen zich naar Mikmas samentrokken,

And Samuel said, What hast thou done? and Saul said, Because I saw how the people were scattered from me, and thou was not present as thou purposedst according to the set time of the days, and the Philistines were gathered to Machmas.

12 dacht ik: Nu komen de Filistijnen op mij af naar Gilgal, nog eer ik Jahweh gunstig gestemd heb. Dus hakte ik de knoop maar door, en droeg zelf het offer op.

Then I said, Now will the Philistines come down to me to Galgala, and I have not sought the face of the Lord: so I forced myself and offered the whole-burnt-offering.

13 Nu sprak Samuël tot Saul: Ge hebt dwaas gehandeld! Zo ge het bevel hadt volbracht, dat Jahweh, uw God, u had gegeven, dan had Jahweh thans uw koningschap over Israël voor altijd bevestigd.

And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly; for thou hast not kept my command, which the Lord commanded thee, as now the Lord would have confirmed thy kingdom over Israel for ever.

14 Maar nu zal uw koningschap geen stand houden. Jahweh zal Zich iemand naar zijn hart zoeken en hem tot vorst over zijn volk aanstellen, omdat ge niet onderhouden hebt, wat Jahweh u had bevolen. En Samuël stond op, vertrok uit Gilgal, en ging zijns weegs.

But now thy kingdom shall not stand to thee, and the Lord shall seek for himself a man after his own heart; and the Lord shall appoint him to be a ruler over his people, because thou hast not kept all that the Lord commanded thee.

15 Wat er van het volk was overgebleven, volgde Saul ten strijde. Toen zij te Giba van Benjamin waren gekomen, monsterde Saul het volk, dat zich bij hem bevond; het waren ongeveer zeshonderd man.

And Samuel arose, and departed from Galgala, and the remnant of the people went after Saul to meet [him] after the men of war, when they had come out of Galgala to Gabaa of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were found with him, about six hundred men.

16 Zo stonden dus Saul met zijn zoon Jonatan en het volk, dat zich bij hen bevond, te Giba van Benjamin, terwijl de Filistijnen bij Mikmas waren gelegerd.

And Saul and Jonathan his son, and the people that were found with them, halted in Gabaa, of Benjamin; and they wept: and the Philistines had encamped in Machmas.

17 Intussen verlieten drie plunderende benden het kamp der Filistijnen. De ene trok in de richting van Ofra, naar het land Sjoeal;

And men came forth to destroy out of the land of the Philistines in three companies; one company turning by the way of Gophera toward the land of Sogal,

18 de tweede in de richting van Bet-Choron; en de derde naar het grensgebied, dat over het Hyena-dal op de steppe uitziet.

and another company turning the way of Baethoron, and another company turning by the way of Gabae that turns aside to Gai of Sabim.

19 Nu was er in heel het land Israël geen smid te vinden; want de Filistijnen hadden gezegd: De Hebreën moeten geen zwaarden of speren kunnen vervaardigen.

And there was not found a smith in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make themselves sword or spear.

20 Dus moest heel Israël zich tot de Filistijnen wenden, als men een ploeg, een houweel, een bijl of een sikkel te slijpen had.

And all Israel went down to the Land of the Philistines to forge every one his reaping-hook and his tool, and every one his axe and his sickle.

21 En voor het scherpen van ploeg of houweel vroegen de Filistijnen een derde sikkel, en even zoveel voor het slijpen van bijlen of sikkels.

And it was near the time of vintage: and their tools were [valued at] three shekels for a plough-share, and there was the same rate for the axe and the sickle.

22 Zo kwam het, dat in de veldslag bij Mikmas niemand van het volk, dat bij Saul en Jonatan was, een zwaard of een lans bezat; alleen Saul en zijn zoon Jonatan waren ermee gewapend.

And it came to pass in the days of the war of Machmas, that there was not a sword or spear found in the hand of all the people, that were with Saul and Jonathan; but with Saul and Jonathan his son was there found.

23 Een wachtpost der Filistijnen hield ook de bergpas van Mikmas bezet.

And there went out some from the camp of the Philistines to the place beyond Machmas.
