< Luka 1 >

1 Aicae salakah kaom tangtang hmuen kawng thuihaih maeto pacoeng maeto kamtomh poe ah suek hanah paroeai ca tarik kaminawk oh o boeh,
My noble [friend] Theophilus, many people saw the things that [Jesus] did while he was with us, from the time when he started [MTY] [his ministry]. They served God [by teaching people] the message [about the Lord Jesus]. Many of those who heard what they taught wrote down for us accounts of the things that [Jesus did from the time when] he began [his ministry].
2 nihcae loe tangsuek na hoi hnukung ah oh o, tamthanglok toksah kaminawk mah, aicae khae thuih ih lok baktih toengah;
3 kahoih koek Theophila, tangsuek na hoi kaom hmuennawk to kakoep ah thaikop boih moe, hmuen kaom maeto pacoeng maeto kamtomh poe ah, nangcae khaeah tarik nahaeloe hoi tih, tiah poekhaih ka tawnh,
I myself have studied these accounts carefully. So I decided that it would be good for me also to write for you [(sg)] an accurate account of these matters.
4 to tiah ni ang patuk o ih lok to kahoihah na panoek o tih.
I want you to know the truth about what you have been taught {what others have taught you}.
5 Judea siangpahrang, Herod dung ah, Zakaria, tiah ahmin kaom qaima maeto oh, anih loe Abijah ih acaeng ah oh moe, a zu Elizabeth loe Aaron ih acaeng ah oh.
When King Herod [the Great ruled] Judea [district], there was a [Jewish] priest named Zechariah. He belonged to the [group of priests called] the Abijah group. He and his wife Elizabeth were both descended from the [first priest of Israel], Aaron.
6 Nihnik loe Sithaw hmaa ah katoeng kami ah oh hoi moe, Angraeng mah paek ih kaalok hoi sak han koi toknawk boih coek koi kaom ai ah a sak hoi.
[God considered that] both of them were righteous, because they constantly completely obeyed everything that God had commanded.
7 Elizabeth loe caa kak pongah nawkta tawn hoi ai, nihnik loe saning coeh hoi parai boeh.
But they had no children, because Elizabeth had been unable to bear children. Furthermore, she and her husband were very old.
8 Anih mah angmah ih kaminawk hoi Sithaw hmaa ah qaima toksakhaih tue phak naah,
One day [Zechariah’s] group was doing their work [in the Temple in Jerusalem], and he was serving as a priest in God’s presence.
9 qaimanawk mah sakzong ih atawk baktih toengah, Angraeng tempul thungah akun moe, hmuihoih thlaekhaih loe anih ih tok ah oh.
Following their custom, [the other priests] chose him by lot to enter the Lord’s temple and burn incense.
10 Hmuihoih thlaek nathuem ah, paroeai kaminawk loe tasa bangah lawkthuih o.
While he was burning the incense, many people were outside [in the courtyard], praying.
11 To naah anih khaeah Angraeng ih van kami maeto amtueng moe, hmuihoih thlaekhaih hmaicam bantang bangah angdoet pae.
Then an angel whom God had [sent] appeared to him. The angel was standing at the right side of the place [where the priests burned] incense.
12 Zakaria mah anih to hnuk naah zit moe, tasoehhaih hoiah oh.
When Zechariah saw the angel, he was startled and became very afraid.
13 Toe van kami mah anih khaeah, Zakaria, zii hmah: na lawkthuihaih Sithaw mah thaih boeh; na zu Elizabeth mah capa maeto na sah pae tih, anih ih ahmin to Johan, tiah sak han oh.
But the angel said to him, “Zechariah, do not be afraid! When you [(sg)] prayed [asking God for a son] (OR, [that God would send the Messiah]), God heard what you prayed. [So] your wife Elizabeth shall bear a son. You must name him John.
14 Anghoehaih hoi oephaih to na tawn tih; anih tapen pongah paroeai kaminawk loe anghoe o tih.
He will cause you to be very happy, and many other people will also be happy because he is born.
15 Anih loe Angraeng mikhnuk ah kalen ah om ueloe, misurtui hoi paqui thaih koi hmuen roe nae mak ai; anih loe amno zok thung hoi kamtong Kacai Muithla hoiah koi tih.
God will consider him to be very important. He must never drink wine or any other alcoholic drink, [in order that he will be completely dedicated to God]. He will be controlled by the Holy Spirit {The Holy Spirit will control him} from before he is born.
16 Anih mah paroeai Israel kaminawk to angmacae ih Angraeng khaeah angqoisak tih.
He will [persuade] many people in Israel to turn away [from their sins and please] the Lord their God.
17 Anih mah ampanawk ih palungthin to a caanawk khaeah angqoisak tih, lok tahngai ai kaminawk to katoeng kaminawk ih palunghahaih loklam bangah angqoisak ueloe, Angraeng hanah kaminawk omsak coek tih, anih loe Elijah ih palungthin, thacakhaih hoiah Angraeng hmaa ah caeh tih, tiah a naa.
As [God’s] Spirit enables him [to preach] powerfully as [the prophet] Elijah did, he will precede [the Messiah]. He will cause parents [SYN] to act [peacefully] toward their children [again]. He will cause [many] people who do not obey [God to hear and obey] the wise things that righteous people [tell them]. He will do this in order to help [many] people to be ready when the Lord [comes].”
18 Zakaria mah van kami khaeah, Hae hmuen hae kawbangmaw ka panoek thai tih? Kai loe mitong boeh moe, ka zu doeh mitong boeh, tiah a naa.
Then Zechariah said to the angel, “I am very old, and my wife is also so old [that she cannot bear a child. So] (I cannot [believe] that what you [(sg)] said [will happen]!/how can I [believe] that what you [(sg)] said [will happen]?) [RHQ]”
19 To naah van kami mah anih khaeah, Kai loe Sithaw hmaa ah angdoe, Gabriel ah ka oh; lok kang thuih moe, kahoih hae anghoehaih tamthangnawk patuek han ih ni nang khaeah ang patoeh.
Then the angel said to him, “I am [God’s chief angel], Gabriel! [I do what God tells me, because] I constantly am in God’s presence! I was sent {[He] sent me} to tell you [(sg)] something good [that is going to happen to you].
20 Khenah, atue phak naah akoep han koi kang thuih ih loknawk to na tang ai pongah, hae hmuennawk ohhaih ni pha ai karoek to, lok na aa tih, tiah a naa.
What I have told you will certainly happen at the time [God decides], but you did not believe what I told you. So now [God will make] you will be unable to talk until the day [your son is born]”!
21 Kaminawk mah Zakariah to zing o, anih loe tempul thungah akra parai boeh pongah dawnrai o.
While [Zechariah and the angel] were talking, the people [in the courtyard] were waiting for Zechariah [to come out]. They wondered, “Why is he staying in the Temple for such a long time?”
22 Anih tasa bang tacawt naah loe, kaminawk khaeah lokthui thai ai boeh: anih loe lok apae ai, kaminawk khaeah ban hoiah ni angmathaih a sak pae: to pongah kaminawk mah anih loe tempul thungah hnuksakhaih a hnuk kalang mue, tiah poek o.
When Zechariah came out, he was not able to speak to the people. Because he could not talk, he made motions with his hands [to try to convey what had happened]. Then they realized that he had seen (a vision [from God]/something that [God] showed him) while he was in the Temple.
23 Anih loe a toksakhaih boeng pacoengah, angmah im ah amlaem.
When Zechariah’s time to work [as a priest in the Temple] was finished, he [left Jerusalem and] returned to his home.
24 To ninawk boeng pacoengah a zu Elizabeth to zokpom; anih loe khrah pangato thung imthung ah anghawk,
Some time later his wife Elizabeth became pregnant [EUP]. She did not leave their house for five months, [because she knew that people would laugh at her if she told them that she was pregnant].
25 anih mah ang khet nathuem ah, kaminawk salakah kai kasae thuihaih to takhoe ving hanah, Angraeng mah kai hanah hae hmuen hae sak boeh, tiah a thuih.
But she thought, “God has enabled me to become pregnant. He has pitied me and I will no longer be ashamed [because I have no children]!”
26 Elizabeth zokpomhaih khrah tarukto phak naah, Sithaw mah van kami Gabriel to Kalili prae, Nazareth vangpui ah kaom,
When Elizabeth had been [pregnant] [EUP] [for almost] six months, the angel Gabriel was sent by God {God sent the angel Gabriel} [again].
27 David imthung takoh Joseph, tiah ahmin kaom kami mah hamh ih tangla cuem khaeah patoeh; tangla kacuem ih ahmin loe Meri.
[This time] he went to Nazareth [town] in Galilee [district], to a virgin whose name was Mary. It had been {[Her parents] had} promised that she would marry a man named Joseph, who was descended from [King] David.
28 Anih khaeah van kami to caeh moe, Kasang koek tahamhoih hnu kami, anghoe ah! Sithaw loe nang hoi nawnto oh: nang loe nongpatanawk thungah tahamhoih kami ah na oh, tiah a naa.
The angel greeted her and said, “(The Lord/God) is with you [(sg)] and you will be greatly blessed {[has decided to] greatly bless you}!”
29 Meri mah anih to hnuk naah, dawnrai, a palung thung hoiah kawbaktih kami tapringhaih lok maw vai, tiah poek.
But Mary was very confused [when she heard] that. She wondered what [the angel meant] by these words.
30 Toe van kami mah anih khaeah, Meri, Zii hmah: nang loe Sithaw mah palung tong ih kami ah na oh boeh.
Then the angel said to her, “Mary, God is very pleased with you [(sg)], so do not be afraid.
31 Khenah, zok na pomh ueloe, caa nongpa maeto na sah tih, anih ih ahmin loe JESU, tiah sak han oh.
You will become pregnant and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus.
32 Anih loe paroeai len tih, Sang koek Capa, tiah kawk o tih: Angraeng Sithaw mah Ampa David ih angraeng tangkhang to anih khaeah paek tih:
He will become great. He will be called {[People will] call him} (the Son of God/the man who is also God). God, the Lord, will make him a king [MTY] as his ancestor [King] David was.
33 Anih mah Jakob imthung to dungzan ah uk tih; a prae loe boenghaih om mak ai, tiah a naa. (aiōn g165)
He will be the King of [the] Jews, the descendants [MTY] of [your ancestor] Jacob, forever. He will rule as king forever!” (aiōn g165)
34 To naah Meri mah van kami khaeah, Hae hmuen loe kawbangmaw angcoeng thai tih? Nongpa hoi ka om ai bae, tiah a naa.
Then Mary said to the angel, “I am a virgin, so how can I [have a baby]?”
35 Van kami mah anih khaeah, Kacai Muithla na nuiah om tih, Kasang koek sakthaihaih tha mah na oh haih tih: to pongah nang khaeah tapen han koi Ciimcai Capa loe Sithaw Capa, tiah kawk tih.
The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come to you; the power of God [MTY/EUP] will overshadow you [and enable you to become pregnant]. So the child [you will] bear will be completely set apart {give himself completely} to obey God, and he will be called {[people] will say that he is} (the Son of God/the man who is also God).
36 Khenah, nam nawkamya ah kaom Elizabeth doeh mitong pacoengah caa nongpa maeto pomh boeh: anih loe caa kak, toe vaihi zokpomhaih khrah tarukto oh boeh.
[I also need to tell you something else]. Your cousin Elizabeth is very old, and it was thought {[people] said} that she could not bear any children. But she has been [pregnant] [EUP] [for almost] six months, and will bear a son!
37 Sithaw han angcoeng thai ai hmuen tidoeh om ai, tiah a naa.
[You should not be surprised at that], because God can do everything!”
38 To naah Meri mah, Khenah, kai loe Angraeng ih toksah nongpata ah ni ka oh; na thuih ih lok baktih toengah ka nuiah om nasoe, tiah a naa. To pacoengah van kami mah anih to caehtaak.
Then Mary said, “All right, I want to serve (the Lord/God), so may what you [(sg)] have said about me come true!” Then the angel left her.
39 Meri loe angthawk moe, Judea prae mae nuiah kaom vangpui maeto ah karangah caeh;
Very soon after that, Mary got ready and went quickly to a town in the highlands of Judea [district] where Zechariah lived.
40 Zakariah ih imthung ah akun moe, Elizabeth to lok tapring.
She entered his house and greeted [his wife] Elizabeth.
41 Meri mah tapring ih lok to Elizabeth mah thaih naah, a zok thung ih nawkta to angtawt; to naah Elizabeth loe Kacai Muithla hoiah koi:
As soon as Elizabeth heard Mary greet her, the baby moved inside [Elizabeth’s] womb. The Holy Spirit took complete control of Elizabeth,
42 anih mah, Nang loe nongpatanawk thungah tahamhoih kami ah na oh, na zok thung ih athaih doeh tahamhoih.
and she said loudly [to Mary], “[God] has blessed you [more than] he has blessed [any other] woman, and [he has] blessed the child you will bear!
43 Tipongah maw ka Angraeng ih amno ah ohhaih to kai khaeah ang paek?
(I am not worthy that [God would allow you] to visit me!/Why is [God allowing you] to visit me?) [RHQ] You will be the mother of my Lord!
44 Khenah, nang tapringhaih lok to ka thaih naah, anghoe loiah ka zok thung ih nawkta to amloep tahang.
[I realize this because] as soon as I heard you greet me, the baby inside my womb moved because he was so happy [that you had come].
45 Angraeng khae hoi thuih ih loknawk loe anih khaeah akoep tih, tiah tanghaih tawn nongpata loe tahamhoih, tiah tha hoiah a hangh.
[God] is pleased with you [because] you believed that what (the Lord/God) told you would come true.”
46 Meri mah, Ka hinghaih pakhra mah Angraeng to pakoeh moe,
Then Mary [praised God by] saying/singing: “, how I [SYN] praise (the Lord/God)!
47 pahlongkung Sithaw khaeah palung anghoehaih ka tawnh.
I am happy because God is the one who saves me.
48 Poek kahnaem a tamna nongpata to anih mah khet boeh: khenah, vaihi hoi kamtong kaminawk boih mah tahamhoih kami, tiah na kawk o tih.
I was only his lowly servant girl, but he did not forget me. So from now on, everyone will say that God was pleased with me,
49 Thacak kami mah kai hanah kalen parai hmuennawk to ang sak pae boeh; anih ih ahmin loe ciimcai.
because they will hear about the things that God [MTY], the mighty one, has done for me. He [MTY] is awesome!
50 Anih palungnathaih loe anih zithaih tawn kaminawk nuiah adung maeto pacoeng maeto khoek to oh.
He acts mercifully toward all those who respect him.
51 Anih mah a ban thacakhaih to amtuengsak moe, poeksang kaminawk to anghaehsak phaeng.
He shows people that he [MTY] is very powerful. He scatters those who think proudly.
52 Thacak kaminawk to angmacae ih angraeng tangkhang nui hoiah pakhrak tathuk moe, poek pahnaem kaminawk to tapom tahang.
He does not let mighty kings rule [MTY] any more, but he honors people who are oppressed (OR, humble).
53 Zok amthlam kaminawk to kahoih hmuennawk hoiah zok amhahsak moe, angraengnawk to bangkrai ah patoeh ving.
He gives good things to eat to those who are hungry, but he sends away the rich people without giving them anything.
54 A palungnathaih to pahnet ai pongah a tamna Israel to abomh;
And now he has remembered what he promised. So he has helped me and all the other people of [MTY] Israel who serve him.
55 aicae ampanawk khaeah a thuih ih lok baktih toengah, Abraham hoi a caanawk khaeah doeh boeng ai ah a thuih, tiah thuih. (aiōn g165)
He promised to Abraham and all our other ancestors who descended from him that he would act mercifully toward them forever.” (aiōn g165)
56 Meri loe Elizabeth hoi khrah thumto oh pacoengah, angmah im ah amlaem.
Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months. Then she returned to her home.
57 Elizabeth nawkta tapenhaih tue phak naah loe, anih mah caa nongpa maeto sak.
When it was time for Elizabeth to give birth to her child, she bore a son.
58 Kawkruk maw Angraeng mah a palungnathaih anih nuiah amtuengsak, tiah imtaeng kaminawk hoi angmah ih nawkamyanawk mah thaih o naah, anih to anghoe o haih.
Her neighbors and relatives heard how (the Lord/God) had greatly blessed her [by enabling her to bear a child], so they were happy along with [Elizabeth].
59 Ni tazetto naah loe tangzat hin aah hanah nawkta to a caeh o haih; nihcae mah anih ih ahmin loe ampa ih ahmin palawk hanah Zakariah, tiah sak han oh, tiah a thuih o.
Seven days later they gathered together for the [ceremony for] circumcising the baby [to show that he belonged to God]. They wanted to give the baby the same name as his father, Zechariah.
60 Amno mah, to tih na ai ni; anih ih ahmin loe Johan, tiah sak han oh, tiah a naa.
But his mother said, “No, [his name will not be Zechariah]. His name will be John!”
61 Nihcae mah anih khaeah, Na caengnawk thungah hae baktih ahmin hae om ai, tiah a naa o.
[So] they said to her, “[John] is not the name of any of your [(dl)] relatives, [so you(dl) should not give him that name]!”
62 To pongah nihcae mah nawkta ih ahmin kawbangmaw sak han, tiah ampa khaeah ban hoi angmathaih a sak pae moe, a dueng o.
Then they made motions with their hands to Zechariah, [for him] to indicate what name [he] wanted to be given {to give} to his son.
63 To naah anih mah ca trikhaih thlung kangphaek to hnik moe, Anih ih ahmin loe Johan, tiah tarik: to naah nihcae dawnrai o boih.
[So] he signaled that they [should give him] a tablet [to write on. When they gave him one], he wrote [on it], “His name is John.” All those [who were there] were surprised!
64 Akra ai ah anih ih pakha to am-ongh pae moe, palai doeh name pae roep, anih loe lok apaeh moe, Sithaw to pakoeh.
Immediately Zechariah was able to speak again [MTY], and he praised God.
65 To tiah hmuen to oh pacoengah nihcae taengah kaom kaminawk boih nuiah zithaih to phak: hae tiah kaom hmuen kawng to Judea prae mae nuiah kaom kaminawk boih mah thuih o.
All their neighbors were amazed/awestruck! They told other people who lived all over the highlands of Judea about what had happened.
66 To lok thaih kaminawk boih mah, Angraeng ih ban anih nuiah oh pongah, hae nawkta loe kawbaktih nawkta ah maw om tih vai? tiah palung thung hoiah a poek o.
Everyone who heard about it kept thinking about it. They were saying, “We wonder what will this child do [for God when] he [grows up] [RHQ]!” They wondered that because [from what had happened they were sure that] God would be helping that child [SYN] [in a powerful way].
67 Ampa Zakariah loe Kacai Muithla hoiah koi moe,
[After] Zechariah’s [son was born], Zechariah was completely directed by the Holy Spirit {the Holy Spirit completely directed Zechariah} as he spoke these words that came from God:
68 Israel kaminawk ih Sithaw loe tahamhoihaih om nasoe; anih loe angmah ih kaminawk khaeah paqaih moe, angmah ih kaminawk to akrang boeh,
“Praise the Lord, the God whom we(inc) people of Israel worship, because he has come to set us, his people, free from our enemies.
69 a tamna David imthung ah aicae hanah pahlonghaih takii maeto tacawtsak boeh;
He is sending us someone who will powerfully [MTY] save us, someone who is descended from [MTY] King David, who served God well.
70 long amtong tangsuek na hoiah angmah ih kaciim tahmaanawk ih pakha hoi thuih ih lok baktih toengah: (aiōn g165)
Long ago God caused his prophets to say that he would do that. (aiōn g165)
71 aicae loe aimacae misa hoi aicae hnuma kaminawk boih ih ban thung hoiah a loih o tih;
He will rescue us from our enemies, and he will save us from the power of all those who hate us.
72 aicae ampanawk khaeah lokkam ih palungnathaih to amtuengsak moe, angmah ih kaciim lokmaihaih to pahnet han ai ah,
He will do this because he has not forgotten what he promised our ancestors; he made an agreement that he would act mercifully to us, their descendants.
73 anih loe aicae ampa Abraham khaeah lokkamhaih to sak boeh:
That is what he strongly promised our ancestor Abraham that he would do.
74 zithaih tawn ai ah a hing o na thung, ciimcaihaih hoi toenghaih hoiah anih ih tok to a sak o hanah, aimacae misa ban thung hoiah aicae to na loisak tih.
God told him that we would be rescued {he would rescue us} from the power of our enemies, that he would enable us to serve him without being afraid,
that he would cause us to be completely dedicated to him, and enable us to live righteously all of our lives.”
76 Nawkta, nang loe, Kasang koek ih tahmaa ah na oh, tiah kawk o tih: nang loe Anih ih loklam paroep hanah Angraeng hmaa ah na caeh tih;
[Then Zechariah said this to] his little son: “My child, you will be called {people will say that you are} a prophet whom God [MTY/EUP] has sent; you will begin your work before (the Lord/Messiah) comes; you will prepare people so that they will be ready for him. (OR, you will begin your work before the Messiah comes).
77 nihcae zaehaihnawk tahmenhaih rang hoiah Anih ih kaminawk khaeah pahlonghaih kawng panoeksak hanah,
You will tell God’s people how he will forgive them and save them from being punished for their sins.
78 van ranui ih ni bae baktih toengah, aicae Sithaw palungnathaih loe aicae khaeah ni baktiah bae tih boeh;
Our God will do that because he is very kind to us. Just like a new day begins when the sun rises [MET], God will do that new thing for us when the Messiah comes to us from heaven.
79 khoving thung hoi duekhaih tahlip tlim ah anghnu kaminawk to aanghaih paek moe, misa angdaehhaih loklam ah aicae khok takansakhaih ni loe angzoh boeh, tiah lok taphong.
People who do not know God [MET] are like those who sit in the darkness. They are afraid [MTY] that they will soon die. But when the Messiah tells us God’s message, it will be like causing such people to see a bright light. He will guide us [SYN] so that we will be living peacefully.”
80 Nawkta loe poekhaih palungthin thacakhaih hoiah qoeng tahang, anih loe Israel kaminawk khaeah amtueng ai karoek to praezaek ah khosak.
[Later], Zechariah’s son grew up and became spiritually strong. Then he lived in a desolate region until he began to preach to the Israeli people.
