1 Korin 8
1 Krang bokhaih hmuen pongah loe hae tiah ka poek, aicae mah panoekhaih a tawnh o boih, tiah a panoek o. Panoekhaih mah kami to amoeksak, toe amlunghaih mah loe kami to qoengsak.
With reference to food that has been offered in sacrifice to idols – We are aware that all of us have knowledge! Knowledge breeds conceit, while love builds up character.
2 Mi kawbaktih doeh ka panoek boeh, tiah poekhaih tawn kami loe, panoek han koi hmuen to panoek ai vop.
If someone thinks that they know anything, they have not yet reached that knowledge which they ought to have reached.
3 Toe Sithaw palung kami loe, Sithaw mah anih to panoek.
On the other hand, if a person loves God, they are known by God.
4 Krangbokhaih moi caakhaih pongah loe hae tiah oh, Long nuiah krangbokhaih loe tidoeh na ai ni, Sithaw maeto khue ni oh, kalah Sithaw roe om ai, tito a panoek o.
With reference, then, to eating food that has been offered to idols – we are aware that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no God but one.
5 Van nuiah maw, to tih ai boeh loe long nuiah maw sithawnawk, tiah kawk ih (pop parai sithawnawk hoi angraengnawk to oh o),
Even supposing that there are so-called ‘gods’ either in heaven or on earth – and there are many such ‘gods’ and ‘lords’ –
6 toe aicae hanah loe Ampa, Sithaw maeto khue ni oh, Anih khae hoiah ni hmuennawk boih to tacawt, aicae loe Anih ah a oh o; Angraeng maeto khue ni oh, Anih loe Jesu Kri ni, Anih rang hoiah hmuennawk boih to oh, aicae loe Anih rang hoiah ni a hing o.
Yet for us there is only one God, the Father, from whom all things come (and for him we live), and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things come (and through him we live).
7 To panoekhaih to kami boih mah tawn ai: thoemto kaminawk loe krangbokhaih palungthin tawnh o pongah, vaihi khoek to angbawnhaih moi caak o naah, krangbokhaih moi caak baktiah ni a caak o vop, nihcae loe kasae kahoih panoekhaih bangah thazok o pongah, to tiah moi caakhaih mah, nihcae to amhnongsak.
Still, it is not everyone that has this knowledge. Some people, because of their association with idols, continued down to the present time, eat the food as food offered to an idol; and their consciences, while still weak, are dulled.
8 Toe caaknaek mah Sithaw khae anghnaisak ai: caa ai cadoeh sae aep ai, caak aep to mah hoih kuehaih om ai.
What we eat, however, will not bring us nearer to God. We lose nothing by not eating this food, and we gain nothing by eating it.
9 Toe acoe oh, to tih ai nahaeloe na koeh baktiah caakhaih mah thazok kaminawk to amtimsak moeng tih.
But take care that this right of yours does not become in any way a stumbling-block to the weak.
10 Panoekhaih tawn kami to krangbokhaih tempul thungah buhcaak han anghnut naah, kami maeto mah anih to hnu nahaeloe, panoekhaih bangah thazok kami to krangbokhaih buhcaaksak hanah thapaek baktiah om mak ai maw?
For if someone should see you who possess this knowledge, feasting in an idol’s temple, will not their conscience, if they are weak, become so hardened that they, too, will eat food offered to idols?
11 Kri mah hinghaih paek ih thazok nawkamya to, na panoekhaih mah amrosak tih.
And so, through this knowledge of yours, the weak person is ruined – someone for whose sake Christ died!
12 Nawkamya to na zae o sak moe, kasae kahoih panoekhaih bangah thazok nawkamya to nganbawh kana na paek o pongah, Kri nuiah zaehaih sah kami ah ni na oh o.
In this way, by sinning against your fellow followers of the Lord and injuring their consciences, while still weak, you sin against Christ.
