হিতোপদেশ 20

1 ১ আঙ্গুর রস উপহাসক; সুরা কলহকারিনী; যে পানীয়ের দ্বারা বিপথগামী হয়, সে জ্ঞানবান নয়।

Wine [is] a mocker, strong drink [is] raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

2 ২ রাজার ক্রোধ তরুণ সিংহের গর্জনের মতো; যে তাঁর রাগ জন্মায়, সে নিজের প্রাণ হারায়।

The fear of a king [is] as the roaring of a lion: [whoso] provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own soul.

3 ৩ বিবাদ থেকে সরে যাওয়া যে কোনো লোকের গৌরব; কিন্তু প্রত্যেক নির্বোধ তর্কের মধ্যে পড়ে।

[It is] an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

4 ৪ অলস শরত্কালে হাল বহে না, শস্যের দিনের ফসল চাইবে, কিন্তু কিছুই পাবে না।

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; [therefore] shall he beg in harvest, and [have] nothing.

5 ৫ মানুষের হৃদয়ের উদ্দেশ্য গভীর জলের মতো; কিন্তু বুদ্ধিমান তা তুলে আনবে।

Counsel in the heart of man [is like] deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

6 ৬ অনেক লোক ঘোষণা করে যে সে বিশ্বস্ত, কিন্তু বিশ্বস্ত লোক কে খুঁজে পেতে পারে?

Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

7 ৭ যে ধার্মিক নিজের সততায় চলে এবং তার পরে তার ছেলেরা ধন্য।

The just [man] walketh in his integrity: his children [are] blessed after him.

8 ৮ যে রাজা সিংহাসনে বসে বিচারের দায়িত্ব পালন করে, তিনি দৃষ্টির দ্বারা সমস্ত মন্দ উড়িয়ে দেন।

A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

9 ৯ কে বলতে পারে, “আমি হৃদয় পরিষ্কার করেছি, আমার পাপ থেকে মুক্ত হয়েছি?”

Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

10 ১০ ভিন্ন ধরনের বাটখারা এবং অসম ওজন, উভয়ই সদাপ্রভু ঘৃণা করে।

Divers weights, [and] divers measures, both of them [are] alike abomination to the LORD.

11 ১১ এছাড়া, বালকও তার কাজের মাধ্যমে পরিচয় দেয়, তার কাজ বিশুদ্ধ ও সরল কি না, জানায়।

Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work [be] pure, and whether [it be] right.

12 ১২ শ্রবণকারী কান ও দর্শনকারী চোখ, এই উভয়ই সদাপ্রভুর বানানো।

The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.

13 ১৩ ঘুমকে ভালবেসো না, পাছে দারিদ্রতা আসে; তুমি চোখ খোলো, খেয়ে সন্তুষ্ট হবে।

Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

14 ১৪ ক্রেতা বলে, “খারাপ! খারাপ!” কিন্তু যখন চলে যায়, তখন গর্ব করে।

[It is] naught, [it is] naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.

15 ১৫ সোনা আছে, প্রচুর মূল্যবান পাথরও আছে, কিন্তু জ্ঞানবিশিষ্ট ঠোঁট অমূল্য রত্ন।

There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge [are] a precious jewel.

16 ১৬ যে অপরের জামিন হয়, তার পোশাক নিয়ে নাও; যে বিজাতীয়দের জামিন হয়, তার কাছে বন্ধক নাও।

Take his garment that is surety [for] a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

17 ১৭ মিথ্যা কথার ফল মানুষের মিষ্টি মনে হয়, কিন্তু পরে তার মুখ কাঁকরে পরিপূর্ণ হয়।

Bread of deceit [is] sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

18 ১৮ পরামর্শ দ্বারা সব পরিকল্পনা স্থির হয় এবং তুমি কেবল জ্ঞানের চালনায় যুদ্ধ কর।

[Every] purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

19 ১৯ পরচর্চা গোপন কথা প্রকাশ করে; যে বেশি কথা বলে, তার সঙ্গে ব্যবহার কর না।

He that goeth about [as] a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

20 ২০ যদি একজন লোক তার বাবাকে অথবা মাকে অভিশাপ দেয়, তার বাতি অন্ধকারের মাঝে নিভে যাবে।

Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

21 ২১ যে অধিকার প্রথমে তাড়াতাড়ি পাওয়া যায়, তার শেষ আশীর্বাদযুক্ত হবে না।

An inheritance [may be] gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

22 ২২ তুমি বল না, “আমি এই ভুলের জন্য তোমাকে প্রতিশোধ দেব;” সদাপ্রভুর অপেক্ষা কর, তিনি তোমাকে উদ্ধার করবেন।

Say not thou, I will recompense evil; [but] wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.

23 ২৩ অসম ওজন সদাপ্রভু ঘৃণা করেন এবং অসৎ তুলাদন্ড ভাল নয়।

Divers weights [are] an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance [is] not good.

24 ২৪ মানুষের পদক্ষেপ সদাপ্রভুর দ্বারা হয়, তবে মানুষ কেমন করে নিজের পথ বুঝবে?

Man’s goings [are] of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

25 ২৫ হঠাৎ পবিত্র হল, বলা, আর মানতের পর বিচার করা, একজন লোকের ফাঁদের মতো।

[It is] a snare to the man [who] devoureth [that which is] holy, and after vows to make enquiry.

26 ২৬ জ্ঞানবান রাজা আজ দুষ্টদেরকে ঝেড়ে ফেলেন এবং তাদের ওপর দিয়ে গরুর গাড়ি চালান।

A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.

27 ২৭ মানুষের আত্মা সদাপ্রভুর প্রদীপ তা তার অন্তরতম অংশে খোঁজ করে।

The spirit of man [is] the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

28 ২৮ নিয়মের বিশ্বস্ততা ও বিশ্বাসযোগ্যতা রাজাকে রক্ষা করে; তিনি দয়ায় নিজের সিংহাসন সুরক্ষিত রাখেন।

Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

29 ২৯ যুবকদের শক্তিই তাদের শোভা, আর পাকা চুল বয়ষ্ক লোকদের শ্রী।

The glory of young men [is] their strength: and the beauty of old men [is] the gray head.

30 ৩০ প্রহারের যা মন্দকে পরিষ্কার করে এবং দন্ডপ্রহার অন্তরতম অংশ পরিষ্কার করে।

The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so [do] stripes the inward parts of the belly.
