الأمثال 13
| الابْنُ الْحَكِيمُ يَقْبَلُ تَأْدِيبَ أَبِيهِ، أَمَّا الْمُسْتَهْزِئُ فَلاَ يَسْتَمِعُ لِلانْتِهَارِ. | ١ 1 |
A wise son listens to his father’s instruction, but a scoffer does not sh'ma ·hear obey· rebuke.
| مِنْ ثَمَرِ أَقْوَالِ فَمِهِ يَأْكُلُ الإِنْسَانُ خَيْراً، وَشَهْوَةُ الْغَادِرِينَ ارْتِكَابُ الظُّلْمِ. | ٢ 2 |
By the fruit of his lips, a man enjoys good things; but the unfaithful crave violence.
| مَنْ ضَبَطَ لِسَانَهُ صَانَ حَيَاتَهُ، وَمَنْ فَغَرَ فَاهُ مُتَهَوِّراً بِكَلاَمِهِ، فَمَصِيرُهُ الدَّمَارُ. | ٣ 3 |
He who guards his mouth guards his soul. One who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.
| نَفْسُ الْكَسُولِ تَشْتَهِي كَثِيراً وَلاَ تَحْصُلُ عَلَى شَيْءٍ، أَمَّا نَفْسُ الْمُجْتَهِدِ فَتَغْنَى. | ٤ 4 |
The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing, but the desire of the diligent shall be fully satisfied.
| يَمْقُتُ الصِّدِّيقُ الْكَذِبَ، أَمَّا الشِّرِّيرُ فَبِكَثْرَةِ كَذِبِهِ يُخْزِي وَيُخْجِلُ. | ٥ 5 |
A upright man hates lies, but a wicked man brings shame and disgrace.
| الْبِرُّ يَحْفَظُ صَاحِبَ السِّيرَةِ الْكَامِلَةِ، وَيُطَوِّحُ الشَّرُّ بِالْخَاطِئِ. | ٦ 6 |
Righteousness guards the way of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.
| رُبَّ فَقِيرٍ مُعْدَمٍ يَتَظَاهَرُ بِالْغِنَى، وَكَثِيرِ الْغِنَى يَتَظَاهَرُ بِالْفَقْرِ. | ٧ 7 |
There are some who pretend to be rich, yet have nothing. There are some who pretend to be poor, yet have great wealth.
| يَفْتَدِي الْمَرْءُ نَفْسَهُ بِغِنَاهُ، أَمَّا الْفَقِيرُ فَلاَ يُبَالِي بِالتَّهْدِيدِ. | ٨ 8 |
The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, but the poor sh'ma ·hear obey· no threats.
| نُورُ الأَبْرَارِ يَتَلأْلأُ بِالْبَهْجَةِ، وَسِرَاجُ الأَشْرَارِ يَنْطَفِئُ وَيُظْلِمُ. | ٩ 9 |
The light of the upright shines brightly, but the lamp candle of the wicked is snuffed out.
| تُوَلِّدُ الْكِبْرِيَاءُ الْخُصُومَةَ، أَمَّا الْمُشَاوِرُونَ فَذَوُو حِكْمَةٍ. | ١٠ 10 |
Pride only breeds quarrels, but with ones who take advice is wisdom.
| مَالُ الظُّلْمِ يَتَبَدَّدُ سَرِيعاً، وَالْمَالُ الْمُدَّخَرُ مِنْ تَعَبِ الْيَدِ يَزْدَادُ. | ١١ 11 |
Wealth gained dishonestly dwindles away, but he who gathers by hand makes it grow.
| الأَمَلُ الْمُمَاطَلُ يُسْقِمُ الْقَلْبَ، وَالرَّغْبَةُ الْمُتَحَقِّقَةُ شَجَرَةُ حَيَاةٍ. | ١٢ 12 |
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when longing is fulfilled, it is a tree of life.
| مَنِ ازْدَرَى بِكَلِمَةِ اللهِ يَجْلِبُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ الْخَرَابَ، وَمَنْ خَشِيَ وَصِيَّةَ اللهِ يَلْقَى الثَّوَابَ. | ١٣ 13 |
Whoever despises instruction will pay for it, but he who respects a charge will be rewarded.
| شَرِيعَةُ الْحَكِيمِ تُنْعِشُ كَيَنْبُوعِ حَيَاةٍ، وَالَّذي يَقْبَلُهَا يَتَفَادَى أَشْرَاكَ الْمَوْتِ. | ١٤ 14 |
The teaching of the wise is a spring of life, to turn from the snares of death.
| حُسْنُ التَّعَقُّلِ يُحْرِزُ الرِّضَى، أَمَّا سَبِيلُ الْغَادِرِينَ فَلاَ يَدُومُ. | ١٥ 15 |
Good understanding wins chen ·grace·; but the way of the unfaithful is hard.
| كُلُّ عَاقِلٍ يَعْمَلُ بِالْمَعْرِفَةِ أَمَّا الأَحْمَقُ فَيَعْرِضُ حُمْقَهُ. | ١٦ 16 |
Every prudent man acts from knowledge, but a fool exposes folly.
| الرَّسُولُ الشِّرِّيرُ يُوْقِعُ النَّاسَ فِي الأَزْمَاتِ، أَمَّا السَّفِيرُ الأَمِينُ فَيُصْلِحُ بَيْنَ الْمُتَخَاصِمِينَ. | ١٧ 17 |
A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a trustworthy envoy gains healing.
| مَنْ يَرْفُضُ التَّأْدِيبَ يَحُلُّ بِهِ الْفَقْرُ وَالذُّلُّ، وَمَنْ يَتَجَاوَبُ مَعَ التَّوْبِيخِ يُكْرَمُ. | ١٨ 18 |
Poverty and shame come to him who refuses discipline, but he who heeds correction shall be honored.
| الرَّغْبَةُ الصَّالِحَةُ الَّتِي تَتَحَقَّقُ تَلُذُّ النَّفْسَ، وَتَجَنُّبُ الشَّرِّ رِجْسٌ لَدَى الْحَمْقَى. | ١٩ 19 |
Longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools detest turning from evil.
| مَنْ يُعَاشِرِ الْحُكَمَاءَ يُصْبِحْ حَكِيماً، وَرَفِيقُ الْحَمْقَى يَنَالُهُ الأَذَى. | ٢٠ 20 |
One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.
| تُلاَحِقُ الْبَلِيَّةُ الْخُطَاةَ، وَيُثَابُ الصِّدِّيقُونَ خَيْراً. | ٢١ 21 |
Misfortune pursues sinners, but prosperity rewards the upright.
| ثَرْوَةُ الصَّالِحِ تَدُومُ حَتَّى يَرِثَهَا الأَحْفَادُ، أَمَّا مِيرَاثُ الْخَاطِئِ فَمُدَّخَرٌ لِلصِّدِّيقِ. | ٢٢ 22 |
A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored for the upright.
| قَدْ يُنْتِجُ حَقْلُ الْفَقِيرِ الْمَحْرُوثُ وَفْرَةً مِنَ الْغِلاَلِ، إِنَّمَا يُتْلِفُهَا سُوءُ التَّبَصُّرِ. | ٢٣ 23 |
An abundance of food is in poor people’s fields, but lo'mishpat ·injustice· sweeps it away.
| مَنْ كَفَّ عَنْ تَأْدِيبِ ابْنِهِ يَمْقُتُهُ، وَمَنْ يُحِبُّ ابْنَهُ يَسْعَى إِلَى تَأْدِيبِهِ. | ٢٤ 24 |
One who spares the rod hates his son, but one who 'ahav ·affectionately loves· him is careful to discipline him.
| يَأْكُلُ الصِّدِّيقُ حَتَّى الشِّبَعِ، أَمَّا بَطْنُ الشِّرِّيرِ فَتَظَلُّ خَاوِيَةً. | ٢٥ 25 |
The upright one eats to the satisfying of his soul, but the belly of the wicked goes hungry.
