إرْمِيا 37

١ 1 وَحَكَمَ الْمَلِكُ صِدْقِيَّا بْنُ يُوشِيَّا مَكَانَ كُنْيَاهُو بْنِ يَهُويَاقِيمَ، لأَنَّ نَبُوخَذْنَصَّرَ مَلِكَ بَابِلَ وَلّاهُ عَلَى أَرْضِ يَهُوذَا.

Now Zedekiah son of Josiah reigned as king instead of Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim. Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had made Zedekiah king over the land of Judah.

٢ 2 وَلَمْ يُطِعْ هُوَ وَلا عَبِيدُهُ وَلا سُكَّانُ الْبِلادِ كَلامَ الرَّبِّ، الَّذِي نَطَقَ بِهِ عَلَى لِسَانِ إِرْمِيَا النَّبِيِّ.

But Zedekiah, his servants, and the people of the land did not listen to the words of Yahweh that he proclaimed by the hand of Jeremiah the prophet.

٣ 3 وَبَعَثَ الْمَلِكُ صِدْقِيَّا يَهُوخَلَ بْنَ شَلَمْيَا، وَصَفَنْيَا بْنَ مَعْسِيَّا الْكَاهِنَ إِلَى إِرْمِيَا النَّبِيِّ قَائِلاً: «تَضَرَّعْ إِلَى الرَّبِّ إِلَهِنَا مِنْ أَجْلِنَا»،

So King Zedekiah, Jehukal son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest sent a message to Jeremiah the prophet. They said, “Pray on our behalf to Yahweh our God.”

٤ 4 وَكَانَ إِرْمِيَا فِي ذَلِكَ الْوَقْتِ طَلِيقاً يَتَجَوَّلُ بَيْنَ الشَّعْبِ، إِذْ لَمْ يَكُنْ قَدِ اعْتُقِلَ بَعْدُ فِي السِّجْنِ.

Now Jeremiah was coming and going among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison.

٥ 5 وَزَحَفَ جَيْشُ فِرْعَوْنَ مِنْ مِصْرَ، فَبَلَغَ خَبَرُهُمُ الْكَلْدَانِيِّينَ الَّذِينَ يُحَاصِرُونَ أُورُشَلِيمَ، فَفَكُّوا عَنْهَا الْحِصَارَ.

Pharaoh's army came out from Egypt, and the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard the news about them and left Jerusalem.

٦ 6 فَأَوْحَى الرَّبُّ بِهَذِهِ النُّبُوءَةِ إِلَى إِرْمِيَا قَائِلاً:

Then the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

٧ 7 «هَذَا مَا يُعْلِنُهُ الرَّبُّ إِلَهُ إِسْرَائِيلَ: هَذَا مَا تُبَلِّغُونَهُ لِمَلِكِ يَهُوذَا الَّذِي بَعَثَكُمْ إِلَيَّ لِتَسْتَشِيرُونِي: إِنَّ جَيْشَ فِرْعَوْنَ الزَّاحِفَ لإِغَاثَتِكُمْ عَلَى وَشْكِ الْعَوْدَةِ إِلَى أَرْضِهِ، مِصْرَ.

“Yahweh, God of Israel, says this: This is what you will say to the king of Judah, because he has sent you to seek advice from me, 'See, Pharaoh's army, which came to help you, is about to go back to Egypt, its own land.

٨ 8 فَيَعُودُ الْكَلْدَانِيُّونَ وَيُحَارِبُونَ هَذِهِ الْمَدِينَةَ وَيَسْتَوْلُونَ عَلَيْهَا وَيُحْرِقُونَهَا بِالنَّارِ.

The Chaldeans will return. They will fight against this city, capture it, and burn it.'

٩ 9 لِذَلِكَ يَقُولُ الرَّبُّ لَا تَخْدَعُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ قَائِلِينَ: سَيَنْسَحِبُ عَنَّا الْكَلْدَانِيُّونَ، فَإِنَّهُمْ لَا يَنْسَحِبُونَ.

Yahweh says this: Do not deceive yourselves by saying, 'Surely the Chaldeans are leaving us,' for they will not leave.

١٠ 10 وَحَتَّى لَوْ قَضَيْتُمْ عَلَى مُحَارِبِيكُمْ مِنْ جَيْشِ الْكَلْدَانِيِّينَ بِأَسْرِهِ، وَلَمْ يَبْقَ مِنْهُمْ سِوَى الْجَرْحَى الْقَابِعِينَ فِي خِيَامِهِمْ، فَإِنَّهُمْ سَيَهُبُّونَ وَيُحْرِقُونَ هَذِهِ الْمَدِينَةَ بِالنَّارِ».

Even if you had defeated the entire Chaldean army that is fighting you so that only wounded men were left in their tents, they would get up and burn this city.”

١١ 11 وَلَمَّا فَكَّ جَيْشُ الْكَلْدَانِيِّينَ الْحِصَارَ عَنْ أُورُشَلِيمَ لِمُوَاجَهَةِ زَحْفِ جَيْشِ فِرْعَوْنَ،

So it was when the Chaldean army had left Jerusalem as Pharaoh's army was coming,

١٢ 12 غَادَرَ إِرْمِيَا أُورُشَلِيمَ لِيَنْطَلِقَ إِلَى أَرْضِ بِنْيَامِينَ لِيَحْصُلَ عَلَى نَصِيبِهِ الَّذِي اشْتَرَاهُ هُنَاكَ بَيْنَ الشَّعْبِ.

then Jeremiah went out from Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin. He wanted to take possession of a tract of land there among his people.

١٣ 13 فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ بَوَّابَةَ بِنْيَامِينَ قَبَضَ عَلَيْهِ رَئِيسُ الْحُرَّاسِ وَاسْمُهُ يَرْئِيَّا بْنُ شَلَمْيَا بْنِ حَنَنِيَّا قَائِلاً لإِرْمِيَا النَّبِيِّ: «أَنْتَ هَارِبٌ لِلانْضِمَامِ إِلَى الْكَلْدَانِيِّينَ».

As he was in the Benjamin Gate, a chief guard was there. His name was Irijah son of Shelemiah son of Hananiah. He grabbed hold of Jeremiah the prophet and said, “You are deserting to the Chaldeans.”

١٤ 14 فَأَجَابَهُ إِرْمِيَا: «هَذَا كَذِبٌ، أَنَا لَسْتُ هَارِباً لِلانْضِمَامِ إِلَى الْكَلْدَانِيِّينَ». فَلَمْ يُصْغِ إِلَيْهِ يَرْئِيَّا بَلِ اعْتَقَلَهُ وَأَتَى بِهِ إِلَى الرُّؤَسَاءِ.

But Jeremiah said, “That is not true. I am not deserting to the Chaldeans.” But Irijah did not listen to him. He took Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.

١٥ 15 فَثَارَ غَضَبُ الرُّؤَسَاءِ عَلَى إِرْمِيَا وَضَرَبُوهُ، وَزَجُّوهُ فِي بَيْتِ يُونَاثَانَ الْكَاتِبِ الَّذِي حَوَّلُوهُ إِلَى سِجْنٍ.

The officials were angry with Jeremiah. They beat him and put him in prison, which had been the house of Jonathan the scribe, for they had turned it into a prison.

١٦ 16 فَعِنْدَمَا دَخَلَ إِرْمِيَا إِلَى زِنْزَانَاتِ الْجُبِّ مَكَثَ هُنَاكَ أَيَّاماً كَثِيرَةً.

So Jeremiah was put into an underground cell, where he stayed for many days.

١٧ 17 ثُمَّ اسْتَدْعَاهُ الْمَلِكُ صِدْقِيَّا، وَسَأَلَهُ فِي قَصْرِهِ سِرّاً: «هَلْ عِنْدَكَ كَلِمَةُ وَحْيٍ مِنْ عِنْدِ الرَّبِّ؟» فَأَجَابَهُ إِرْمِيَا: «نَعَمْ». ثُمَّ أَضَافَ: «إِنَّكَ سَتُسَلَّمُ إِلَى يَدِ مَلِكِ بَابِلَ».

Then King Zedekiah sent someone who brought him to the palace. In his house, the king asked him privately, “Is there any word from Yahweh?” Jeremiah answered, “There is a word: You will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon.”

١٨ 18 ثُمَّ قَالَ إِرْمِيَا لِلْمَلِكِ صِدْقِيَّا: «بِمَاذَا أَسَأْتُ إِلَيْكَ وَإِلَى رِجَالِكَ وَإِلَى هَذَا الشَّعْبِ حَتَّى زَجَجْتُمْ بِي فِي السِّجْنِ؟

Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “How have I sinned against you, your servants, or this people so that you have placed me in prison?

١٩ 19 وَأَيْنَ أَنْبِيَاؤُكُمُ الَّذِينَ تَنَبَّأُوا لَكُمْ قَائِلِينَ: إِنَّ مَلِكَ بَابِلَ لَنْ يَزْحَفَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَعَلَى هَذِهِ الأَرْضِ؟

Where are your prophets, the ones who prophesied for you and said the king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land?

٢٠ 20 وَالآنَ اسْمَعْ يَا سَيِّدِي الْمَلِكَ، وَلْيَحْظَ تَوَسُّلِي بِقُبُولِكَ، لَا تُرْجِعْنِي إِلَى بَيْتِ يُونَاثَانَ الْكَاتِبِ لِئَلَّا أَمُوتَ».

But now listen, my master the king! Let my pleas come before you. Do not return me to the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I will die there.”

٢١ 21 فَأَصْدَرَ الْمَلِكُ صِدْقِيَّا أَمْرَهُ بِايْدَاعِ إِرْمِيَا دَارَ الْحَرَسِ وَأَنْ يُقَدَّمَ لَهُ رَغِيفٌ مِنَ الْخُبْزِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ مِنْ سُوقِ الْخَبَّازِينَ إِلَى أَنْ يَنْفَدَ الْخُبْزُ كُلُّهُ مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ. وَهَكَذَا مَكَثَ إِرْمِيَا فِي دَارِ الْحَرَسِ.

So King Zedekiah gave an order. His servants confined Jeremiah in the courtyard of the guard. A loaf of bread was given him every day from the street of the bakers, until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah stayed in the courtyard of the guard.
