Gióp 1
1 Tại trong xứ Uùt-xơ có một người tên là Gióp; người ấy vốn trọn vẹn và ngay thẳng; kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời, và lánh khỏi điều ác.
THERE was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was whole-hearted and upright, and one that feared God, and shunned evil.
2 Người sanh được bảy con trai và ba con gái;
And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
3 có bảy ngàn chiên, ba ngàn lạc đà, năm trăm đôi bò, năm trăm lừa cái, và tôi tớ rất nhiều; người ấy lớn hơn hết trong cả dân Đông phương.
His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.
4 Các con trai người hay đi dự tiệc, đãi thay phiên nhau trong nhà của mỗi người; và sai mời ba chị em gái mình ăn uống chung với mình.
And his sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one upon his day; and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5 Xảy khi các ngày yến tiệc xong rồi, Gióp sai người đi dọn các con cái mình cho thanh sạch, thức dậy sớm, dâng của lễ thiêu tùy số chúng nó; vì người nói rằng: Dễ thường các con ta có phạm tội, và trong lòng từ chối Đức Chúa Trời chăng. Gióp hằng làm như vậy.
And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said: 'It may be that my sons have sinned, and blasphemed God in their hearts.' Thus did Job continually.
6 Vả, một ngày kia các con trai của Đức Chúa Trời đến ra mắt Đức Giê-hô-va, và Sa-tan cũng đến trong vòng chúng.
Now it fell upon a day, that the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
7 Đức Giê-hô-va phán hỏi Sa-tan rằng: Ngươi ở đâu đến? Sa-tan thưa với Đức Giê-hô-va rằng: Tôi trải qua đây đó trên đất và dạo chơi tại nơi nó.
And the LORD said unto Satan: 'Whence comest thou?' Then Satan answered the LORD, and said: 'From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.'
8 Đức Giê-hô-va lại hỏi Sa-tan rằng: Ngươi có nhìn thấy Gióp, tôi tớ của ta chăng; nơi thế gian chẳng có người nào giống như nó, vốn trọn vẹn và ngay thẳng, kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời, và lánh khỏi điều ác?
And the LORD said unto Satan: 'Hast thou considered My servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a whole-hearted and an upright man, one that feareth God, and shunneth evil?'
9 Sa-tan thưa với Đức Giê-hô-va rằng: Gióp há kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời luống công sao?
Then Satan answered the LORD, and said: 'Doth Job fear God for nought?
10 Chúa há chẳng dựng hàng rào binh vực ở bốn phía người, nhà người, và mọi vật thuộc về người sao? Chúa đã ban phước cho công việc của tay người và làm cho của cải người thêm nhiều trên đất.
Hast not Thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions are increased in the land.
11 Nhưng bây giờ hãy giơ tay Chúa ra, đụng đến hại các vật người có, ắt là người sẽ phỉ báng Chúa trước mặt.
But put forth Thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, surely he will blaspheme Thee to Thy face.'
12 Đức Giê-hô-va phán với Sa-tan rằng: Nầy, các vật người có đều phó trong tay ngươi; nhưng chớ tra tay vào mình nó. Sa-tan bèn lui ra khỏi mặt Đức Giê-hô-va.
And the LORD said unto Satan: 'Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand.' So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
13 Xảy một ngày kia, khi các con trai và con gái người đang ăn và uống rượu trong nhà anh cả chúng nó,
And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,
14 một sứ giả đến báo tin cho Gióp rằng: Bò đang cày, lừa đang ăn gần bên cạnh,
that there came a messenger unto Job, and said: 'The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them;
15 thì dân Sê-ba xông vào chúng nó, đoạt cướp đi, và lấy lưỡi gươm giết các tôi tớ; chỉ một mình tôi thoát khỏi đặng báo tin cho ông.
and the Sabeans made a raid, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'
16 Người nầy còn đang nói, thì một người khác đến, báo rằng: Lửa của Đức Chúa Trời từ trên trời giáng xuống thiêu đốt các con chiên và tôi tớ, làm cho tiêu hủy chúng nó đi; chỉ một mình tôi thoát khỏi đặng báo tin cho ông.
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'A fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'
17 Người nầy còn đang nói, thì một kẻ khác chạy đến, báo rằng: Dân Canh-đê phân làm ba đạo, xông vào lạc đà, cướp đoạt đi, và lấy lưỡi gươm giết các tôi tớ; chỉ một mình tôi thoát khỏi đặng báo tin cho ông.
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'The Chaldeans set themselves in three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'
18 Người nầy còn đang nói, thì một kẻ khác chạy đến, báo rằng: Các con trai và con gái ông đang ăn uống tại nơi nhà anh cả của họ,
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house;
19 kìa một ngọn gió lớn từ phía bên kia sa mạc thổi đến, làm cho bốn góc nhà rung rinh, nhà sập xuống đè chết các người trẻ tuổi; chỉ một mình tôi thoát khỏi đặng báo tin cho ông.
And, behold, there came a great wind from across the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'
20 Gióp bèn chổi dậy, xé áo mình, và cạo đầu, đoạn xấp mình xuống đất mà thờ lạy,
Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped;
21 và nói rằng: Tôi trần truồng lọt khỏi lòng mẹ, và tôi cũng sẽ trần truồng mà về; Đức Giê-hô-va đã ban cho, Đức Giê-hô-va lại cất đi; đáng ngợi khen danh Đức Giê-hô-va!
And he said; naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither; the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
22 Trong mọi sự ấy, Gióp không phạm tội, và chẳng nói phạm thượng cùng Đức Chúa Trời.
For all this Job sinned not, nor ascribed aught unseemly to God.
