II Sa-mu-ên 10

1 Sau việc ấy, vua dân Am-môn băng, và Ha-nun, con trai người, kế vị.

And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.

2 Đa-vít nói: Ta muốn làm ơn cho Ha-nun, con trai của Na-hách, như cha người đã làm ơn cho ta. Vậy, Đa-vít sai tôi tớ mình đi đến an ủi người về sự chết của cha người; các tôi tớ của Đa-vít đến trong xứ của dân Am-môn.

And David said: 'I will show kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness unto me.' So David sent by the hand of his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

3 Nhưng các quan trưởng của dân Am-môn nói cùng Ha-nun, chúa mình, rằng: Oâng tưởng rằng Đa-vít sai những kẻ an ủi đến cùng ông là vì tôn kính cha ông sao? Đa-vít sai những tôi tớ người đến cùng ông, há chẳng phải vì muốn xem xét thành, do thám nó đặng phá diệt đi chăng?

But the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord: 'Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David sent his servants unto thee to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?'

4 Vậy, Ha-nun bắt các tôi tớ của Đa-vít, cạo phân nửa râu họ, cắt phân nửa quần áo cho đến nửa thân mình; đoạn cho họ đi về.

So Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

5 Có người thuật lại việc ấy cùng Đa-vít; người bèn sai kẻ đi đón mấy người ấy, vì họ lấy làm hổ thẹn lắm. Vua sai bảo rằng: Hãy ở tại Giê-ri-cô cho đến chừng râu của các ngươi đã mọc lại; đoạn các ngươi sẽ trở về.

When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said: 'Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.'

6 Khi dân Am-môn thấy mình bị Đa-vít gớm ghét, bèn sai người đi chiêu mộ dân Sy-ri ở Bết-Rê-hốt và ở Xô-ba, số chừng hai vạn lính bộ; lại chiêu mộ vua Ma-a-ca với một ngàn người, và một vạn hai ngàn người ở xứ Tóp.

And when the children of Ammon saw that they were become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Arameans of Beth-rehob, and the Arameans of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with a thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men.

7 Đa-vít hay được điều đó, liền sai Giô-áp với các dõng sĩ của đạo binh mình đi đánh chúng nó.

And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

8 Dân Am-môn kéo ra, dàn trận tại nơi cửa thành, còn dân Sy-ri ở Xô-ba và ở Rê-hóp, những người ở Tóp và ở Ma-a-ca đều đóng riêng ra trong đồng bằng.

And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate; and the Arameans of Zobah, and of Rehob, and the men of Tob and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.

9 Giô-áp thấy quân giặc hãm đánh đằng trước và đằng sau, bèn chọn người lính trong đạo tinh binh Y-sơ-ra-ên, và dàn binh đó ra cùng dân Sy-ri;

Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Arameans;

10 còn binh còn lại, người trao cho A-bi-sai, em mình, đặng bày trận đối cùng dân Am-môn.

and the rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother, and he put them in array against the children of Ammon.

11 Người nói cùng A-bi-sai rằng: Nếu dân Sy-ri mạnh hơn anh, em sẽ đến giúp anh; nhưng nếu dân Am-môn mạnh hơn em, anh sẽ đến giúp em.

And he said: 'If the Arameans be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me, but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.

12 Hãy vững lòng bền chí, đánh giặc cách can đảm, vì dân sự ta và vì các thành của Đức Chúa Trời chúng ta; nguyện Đức Giê-hô-va làm theo ý Ngài lấy làm tốt!

Be of good courage, and let us prove strong for our people, and for the cities of our God; and the LORD do that which seemeth Him good.'

13 Đoạn, Giô-áp với quân lính theo người đều đến gần, giao chiến cùng dân Sy-ri; chúng chạy trốn trước mặt người.

So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh unto the battle against the Arameans; and they fled before him.

14 Bấy giờ, vì dân Am-môn thấy dân Sy-ri chạy trốn, thì chúng cũng chạy trốn khỏi trước mặt A-bi-sai, và vào trong thành. Giô-áp lìa khỏi dân Am-môn mà trở về Giê-ru-sa-lem.

And when the children of Ammon saw that the Arameans were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

15 Dân Sy-ri thấy mình bị dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đánh bại, bèn nhóm hiệp lại.

And when the Arameans saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they gathered themselves together.

16 Ha-đa-rê-xe sai chiêu dân Sy-ri ở bên kia sông; chúng nó đến Hê-lam, có Sô-bác làm tổng binh của Ha-đa-rê-xe, quản suất.

And Hadadezer sent, and brought out the Arameans that were beyond the River; and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the host of Hadadezer at their head.

17 Nghe tin nầy, Đa-vít hiệp lại hết thảy Y-sơ-ra-ên, đi ngang qua Giô-đanh, kéo đến Hê-lam. Dân Sy-ri dàn trận đối cùng Đa-vít, và giao chiến cùng người.

And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Arameans set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.

18 Nhưng chúng chạy trốn trước mặt Y-sơ-ra-ên. Đa-vít giết bảy trăm xe binh của dân Sy-ri, và bốn muôn lính kị. Người cũng giết Sô-bác, tổng binh của chúng nó, và nó chết tại đó.

And the Arameans fled before Israel; and David slew of the Arameans seven hundred drivers of chariots, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, so that he died there.

19 Khi các vua chư hầu của Ha-đa-rê-xe thấy mình bị Y-sơ-ra-ên thấy mình bị Y-sơ-ra-ên đánh bại, thì lập hòa cùng Y-sơ-ra-ên và phục dịch họ; dân Sy-ri không còn dám giúp dân Am-môn nữa.

And when all the kings that were servants to Hadadezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Arameans feared to help the children of Ammon any more.
