Phục Truyền Luật Lệ 20
1 Khi nào ngươi ra giao chiến cùng thù nghịch mình, nếu thấy ngựa, xe và binh đông hơn mình, thì chớ sợ; vì Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi, là Ðấng đã khiến ngươi lên khỏi xứ Ê-díp-tô, ở cùng ngươi.
When thou shalt go forth to warre against thine enemies, and shalt see horses and charets, and people moe then thou, be not afrayde of them: for the Lord thy God is with thee, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt.
2 Lúc gần khai chiến, thầy tế lễ sẽ bước tới, nói cùng dân sự
And when ye are come neere vnto the battel, then the Priest shall come forth to speake vnto the people,
3 mà rằng: Hỡi Y-sơ-ra-ên, hãy nghe! Ngày nay các ngươi đi giao chiến cùng thù nghịch mình, lòng các ngươi chớ nhát, chớ sợ, chớ run rẩy, và chớ kinh khiếp vì chúng nó;
And shall say vnto them, Heare, O Israel: ye are come this day vnto battell against your enemies: let not your heartes faynt, neither feare, nor be amased, nor adread of them.
4 bởi Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời các ngươi là Ðấng cùng đi với các ngươi, đặng vì các ngươi đánh kẻ thù nghịch và giải cứu cho.
For ye Lord your God goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, and to saue you
5 Bấy giờ, các quan trưởng sẽ nói cùng dân sự mà rằng: Ai đã cất một nhà mới, mà chưa khánh thành? Hãy đi trờ về nhà mình, e chết nơi chiến trận, rồi một người khác sẽ khánh thành chăng.
And let the officers speake vnto the people, saying, What man is there that hath buylt a new house, and hath not dedicate it? let him go and returne to his house, least he dye in the battel, and an other man dedicate it.
6 Ai đã trồng một vườn nho và chưa hái trái? Hãy đi trở về nhà mình, kẻo chết nơi chiến trận, rồi một người khác sẽ hái trái chăng.
And what man is there that hath planted a vineyarde, and hath not eaten of the fruite? let him go and returne againe vnto his house, least he die in the battel, and another eate the fruite.
7 Ai đã làm lễ hỏi một người nữ, mà chưa cưới? Hãy đi trở về nhà mình, e chết nơi chiến trận, rồi người khác sẽ cưới nàng chăng.
And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and returne againe vnto his house, lest he die in the battell, and another man take her.
8 Các quan trưởng sẽ cứ nói tiếp cùng dân sự mà rằng: Ai là người sợ và nhất? Hãy đi trở về nhà mình, e lòng của anh em mình tán đởm như lòng mình chăng.
And let the officers speake further vnto the people, and say, Whosoeuer is afrayde and faynt hearted, let him go and returne vnto his house, least his brethrens heart faynt like his heart.
9 Vừa khi các quan trưởng nói xong với dân sự, thì phải lập những tướng làm đầu dân sự.
And after that the officers haue made an ende of speaking vnto the people, they shall make captaines of the armie to gouerne the people.
10 Khi ngươi đến gần một cái thành đặng hãm, trước phải giảng hòa cùng nó.
When thou commest neere vnto a citie to fight against it, thou shalt offer it peace.
11 Nếu thành đó đáp hòa và mở cửa cho ngươi, thì toàn dân sự ở đó sẽ nạp thuế và phục dịch ngươi.
And if it answere thee againe peaceably, and open vnto thee, then let all the people that is founde therein, be tributaries vnto thee, and serue thee.
12 Ví bằng thành không khứng hòa, nhưng khai chiến cùng ngươi, bấy giờ ngươi sẽ vây nó.
But if it will make no peace with thee, but make war against thee, then shalt thou besiege it.
13 Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi sẽ phó nó vào tay ngươi, rồi ngươi giết hết thảy người nam bằng lưỡi gươm.
And the Lord thy God shall deliuer it into thine handes, and thou shalt smite all the males thereof with the edge of the sworde.
14 Song ngươi phải thâu cho mình những đàn bà, con trẻ, súc vật, và mọi vật chi ở trong thành, tức là mọi của cướp được. Ngươi sẽ ăn lấy của cướp của quân nghịch mà Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi, ban cho ngươi.
Onely the women, and the children, and the cattel, and all that is in the citie, euen all the spoyle thereof shalt thou take vnto thy selfe, and shalt eate the spoyle of thine enemies, which the Lord thy God hath giuen thee.
15 Ngươi phải đối đãi như vậy cùng các thành ở cách xa ngươi, không thuộc về những dân tộc nầy.
Thus shalt thou do vnto all ye cities, which are a great way off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations here.
16 Nhưng trong các thành của những dân tộc nầy, mà Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi ban cho ngươi làm sản nghiệp, thì chớ để sống một vật nào biết thở;
But of the cities of this people, which the Lord thy God shall giue thee to inherite, thou shalt saue no person aliue,
17 khá tận diệt dân Hê-tít, dân A-mô-rít, dân Ca-na-an, dân Phê-rê-sít, dân Hê-vít, dân Giê-bu-sít, y như Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi đã phán dặn,
But shalt vtterly destroy them: to wit, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hiuites, and the Iebusites, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee,
18 để chúng nó không dạy các ngươi bắt chước làm theo những sự gớm ghiếc chúng nó đã làm, đặng cúng thờ các thần chúng nó, e các ngươi phạm tội cùng Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời các ngươi chăng.
That they teache you not to doe after all their abominations, which they haue done vnto their gods, and so ye should sinne against the Lord your God.
19 Khi ngươi vây một thành nào lâu đặng hãm chiếm, chớ lấy rìu chặt những cây của thành đó, vì ngươi có thể ăn được trái nó. Vậy, chớ chặt nó; vì cây ngoại đồng há là một người để bị ngươi vây sao?
When thou hast besieged a citie long time, and made warre against it to take it, destroy not the trees therof, by smiting an axe into them: for thou mayest eate of them: therfore thou shalt not cut them downe to further thee in the siege, (for the tree of the field is mans life)
20 Ngươi chỉ phải phá hại và chặt những cây mình biết chẳng phải là cây ăn trái; hãy dùng nó cất đồn lũy để đánh thành đang làm giặc với mình đó, cho đến chừng nào nó đầu hàng.
Onely those trees, which thou knowest are not for meate, those shalt thou destroy and cut downe, and make fortes against the citie that maketh warre with thee, vntil thou subdue it.
