Công Vụ Các Sứ đồ 10
1 Tại Sê-sa-rê, có một quan chỉ huy quân đội La Mã tên Cọt-nây, ông là đại đội trưởng trong trung đoàn Ý-đại-lợi.
At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in the regiment known as the “Italian Regiment,”
2 Ông và mọi người trong nhà đều có lòng mộ đạo, kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời. Ông cứu tế dân nghèo cách rộng rãi và siêng năng cầu nguyện với Đức Chúa Trời.
A religious man and one who reverenced God, with all his household. He was liberal in his charities to the people, and prayed to God constantly.
3 Một hôm, vào khoảng ba giờ chiều, ông thấy rõ trong khải tượng, một thiên sứ của Đức Chúa Trời đến gọi “Cọt-nây!”
One afternoon, about three o’clock, he distinctly saw in a vision an angel from God come to him, and call him by name.
4 Cọt-nây nhìn sửng thiên sứ, sợ hãi: “Thưa ngài, có việc gì?” Thiên sứ đáp: “Lời cầu nguyện và việc cứu tế của ngươi đã được Đức Chúa Trời ghi nhận.
Cornelius fixed his eyes on him and, in great alarm, said, ‘What is it, Lord?’ ‘Your prayers and your charities,’ the angel answered, ‘have been an acceptable offering to God.
5 Bây giờ ông hãy cho người đến Gia-pha, mời một người tên là Si-môn Phi-e-rơ về đây.
And now, send messengers to Joppa and fetch a man called Simon, who is also known as Peter.
6 Ông ấy đang trọ trong nhà Si-môn, thợ thuộc da, gần bờ biển. Phi-e-rơ sẽ bảo ông mọi việc phải làm.”
He is lodging with a tanner named Simon, who has a house near the sea.’
7 Khi thiên sứ đi rồi, Cọt-nây gọi hai gia nhân và một binh sĩ có lòng mộ đạo trong đám thuộc hạ của ông.
When the angel, who had spoken to him, had gone, Cornelius called two servants and a religious soldier, who was one of his constant attendants,
8 Ông thuật cho họ nghe khải tượng rồi sai đi Gia-pha.
and, after telling them the whole story, sent them to Joppa.
9 Hôm sau, khi người nhà Cọt-nây gần đến Gia-pha, Phi-e-rơ lên sân thượng cầu nguyện, lúc ấy vào khoảng giữa trưa.
On the next day, while these men were on their way, just as they were nearing the town, Peter went up on the housetop about midday to pray.
10 Phi-e-rơ đang đói, muốn ăn, nhưng khi thức ăn đang được chuẩn bị, ông xuất thần,
He became hungry and wanted something to eat; but while it was being prepared, he fell into a trance,
11 thấy trời mở ra và một vật như tấm vải lớn buộc bốn góc hạ xuống đất,
and saw that the heavens were open, and that something like a great sail was descending, let down by its four corners towards the earth.
12 trong đó có đủ loài thú vật, loài bò sát và loài chim trời.
In it were all kinds of quadrupeds, reptiles, and birds.
13 Thình lình có tiếng gọi: “Phi-e-rơ hãy đứng dậy, làm thịt mà ăn.”
Then he was aware of a voice which said – ‘Stand up, Peter, kill something, and eat.’
14 Phi-e-rơ nói: “Lạy Chúa, con không dám, vì con không hề ăn vật gì không tinh sạch hay ô uế.”
‘No, Lord, I cannot,’ answered Peter, ‘for I have never eaten anything defiled and unclean.’
15 Tiếng ấy lại bảo ông lần nữa: “Vật gì được Đức Chúa Trời tẩy sạch thì không còn ô uế nữa.”
Again he was aware of a voice which said – ‘What God has pronounced clean, do not regard as defiled.’
16 Lời đó lặp lại ba lần. Rồi vật kia được thu lên trời.
This happened three times, and then suddenly it was all taken up into the heavens.
17 Phi-e-rơ rất phân vân. Ý nghĩa khải tượng ấy là gì? Vừa lúc đó người nhà Cọt-nây tìm đến nhà của Si-môn. Họ đứng ngoài cổng
While Peter was still perplexed as to the meaning of the vision that he had seen, the men sent by Cornelius, having enquired the way to Simon’s house, came up to the gate,
18 và hỏi có người nào tên Si-môn Phi-e-rơ tại đó không.
and called out and asked if the Simon, who was also known as Peter, was lodging there.
19 Phi-e-rơ đang ngẫm nghĩ về khải tượng thì nghe Chúa Thánh Linh phán: “Này! Có ba người đang tìm con.
Peter was still pondering over the vision, when the Spirit said to him, ‘There are two men looking for you at this moment.
20 Con cứ đứng dậy, xuống lầu và đi với họ. Đừng lo lắng, vì Ta đã sai họ đến.”
Go down at once and do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.’
21 Phi-e-rơ xuống bảo người nhà Cọt-nây: “Tôi chính là người các ông đang tìm. Các ông đến đây có việc gì?”
Peter went down to the men and said, ‘I am the person you are looking for. What is your reason for coming?’
22 Họ đáp: “Đại đội trưởng Cọt-nây sai chúng tôi đến. Chủ chúng tôi là người công chính và kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời, được mọi người Do Thái kính trọng. Đức Chúa Trời sai thiên sứ bảo chủ chúng tôi mời ông về nhà để nghe lời ông chỉ dạy.”
The men replied, ‘Our centurion, Cornelius, a pious man who reverences God and is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, has been instructed by a holy angel to send for you to his house, and to listen to what you have to say.’
23 Phi-e-rơ đưa họ vào nhà nghỉ đêm. Sáng sau, ông lên đường với họ, có vài anh em tín hữu Gia-pha cùng đi.
So Peter invited them in and entertained them. The next day he lost no time in setting out with them, accompanied by some of the Lord’s followers from Joppa;
24 Hôm sau, Phi-e-rơ đến Sê-sa-rê. Lúc ấy, Cọt-nây đã mời họ hàng, thân hữu họp lại chờ đợi.
and the day following he entered Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them, and had invited his relatives and intimate friends to meet them.
25 Thấy Phi-e-rơ đến, Cọt-nây ra đón, quỳ lạy dưới chân.
So, when Peter entered the city, Cornelius met him, and, throwing himself at Peter’s feet, bowed to the ground.
26 Nhưng Phi-e-rơ đỡ Cọt-nây đứng dậy: “Xin ông đứng lên! Tôi cũng chỉ là người như ông.”
Peter, however, lifted him up, saying as he did so, ‘Stand up, I am only human like yourself.’
27 Vừa nói vừa bước vào nhà, Phi-e-rơ nhận thấy có nhiều người đang nhóm họp.
Talking with him as he went, Peter entered the house, where he found a large gathering of people, to whom he said,
28 Ông nói: “Quý vị đều biết rõ, người Do Thái không được phép kết thân hoặc giao thiệp với dân ngoại. Tuy nhiên, Đức Chúa Trời đã dạy tôi không được phân biệt người ô uế hay người không tinh sạch.
‘You are doubtless aware that it is forbidden for a Jew to be intimate with a foreigner, or even to enter his house; and yet God has shown me that I ought not to call anyone defiled or unclean.
29 Vì thế tôi không ngần ngại đến ngay khi quý ông mời. Vậy xin hỏi quý ông gọi tôi đến có việc gì?”
That was why I came, when I was sent for, without raising any objection. And now I ask your reason for sending for me.’
30 Cọt-nây trả lời: “Ba ngày trước, cũng vào giờ này, khoảng ba giờ chiều, tôi đang cầu nguyện trong nhà. Thình lình một người mặc áo sáng chói đến đứng trước mặt.
‘Just three days ago this very hour,’ Cornelius said, ‘I was in my house, saying the Afternoon Prayers, when a man in dazzling clothing suddenly stood before me.
31 Người bảo tôi: ‘Cọt-nây! Lời cầu nguyện ông đã được Chúa nghe, việc cứu tế ông đã được Ngài ghi nhận.
“Cornelius,” he said, “your prayer has been heard, and your charities have been accepted, by God.
32 Vậy ông nên sai người đến Gia-pha mời Si-môn Phi-e-rơ. Ông ấy đang trọ tại nhà Si-môn, thợ thuộc da, ở cạnh bờ biển.’
Therefore send to Joppa, and invite the Simon, who is also known as Peter, to come here. He is lodging in the house of Simon the tanner, near the sea.”
33 Tôi lập tức sai người mời ông, nay ông đã vui lòng đến tận đây. Toàn thể chúng tôi đang nhóm họp trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời để nghe tất cả những điều Chúa đã truyền dạy ông.”
Accordingly I sent to you at once, and you have been so good as to come. And now we are all here in the presence of God, to listen to all that you have been instructed by the Lord to say.’
34 Phi-e-rơ nói: “Bây giờ, tôi biết chắc chắn Đức Chúa Trời không thiên vị ai.
Then Peter began. ‘I see, beyond all doubt,’ he said, ‘that God does not show partiality,
35 Bất cứ dân tộc nào, hễ ai kính sợ Chúa và làm điều công chính, Chúa đều tiếp nhận.
but that in every nation he who reverences him and does what is right is acceptable to him.
36 Chúa Cứu Thế Giê-xu là Chúa muôn dân đã công bố Phúc Âm của Đức Chúa Trời cho người Ít-ra-ên.
God has sent his message to the Israelites and told them, through Jesus Christ, the good news of peace – and Jesus is Lord of all!
37 Như quý vị biết, sau khi Giăng giảng dạy về lễ báp-tem, Đạo Chúa được truyền giảng từ xứ Ga-li-lê, và phổ biến khắp xứ Giu-đê.
You yourselves know the story which spread through all Judea, how, beginning form Galilee, after the baptism which John proclaimed –
38 Đức Chúa Trời đã cho Chúa Giê-xu người Na-xa-rét đầy dẫy Chúa Thánh Linh và quyền năng. Chúa Giê-xu đi khắp nơi làm việc thiện và chữa lành những người bị quỷ áp bức, vì Đức Chúa Trời ở với Ngài.
the story, I mean, of Jesus of Nazareth, and how God consecrated him his Christ by enduing him with the Holy Spirit and with power; and how he went about doing good and curing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
39 Chúng tôi đã chứng kiến tất cả những việc Ngài làm trong nước Ít-ra-ên và tại Giê-ru-sa-lem. Người Do Thái đã giết Ngài trên cây thập tự,
We are ourselves, too, witnesses to all that he did in Judea and in Jerusalem; yet they put him to death by hanging him on a cross!
40 nhưng đến ngày thứ ba, Đức Chúa Trời cho Ngài sống lại và hiện ra cho những người được Đức Chúa Trời lựa chọn làm nhân chứng.
This Jesus God raised on the third day, and enabled him to appear,
41 Ngài không hiện ra cho mọi người, nhưng cho chúng tôi là người Đức Chúa Trời đã chọn làm nhân chứng, những người được ăn uống với Ngài sau khi Ngài sống lại.
not indeed to everyone, but to witnesses chosen beforehand by God – to us, who ate and drank with him after his resurrection from the dead.
42 Chúa truyền lệnh cho chúng tôi rao giảng Phúc Âm mọi nơi, làm chứng rằng Đức Chúa Trời đã lập Ngài làm Chánh Án xét xử mọi người sống và người chết.
Further, God charged us to proclaim to the people, and solemnly affirm, that it is Jesus who has been appointed by God judge of the living and the dead.
43 Tất cả các nhà tiên tri đều viết về Ngài rằng hễ ai tin Ngài đều được tha tội nhờ Danh Ngài.”
To him it is that all the prophets bear witness, when they say that everyone who believes in him receives through his name forgiveness of sins.’
44 Phi-e-rơ còn đang nói, Chúa Thánh Linh đã giáng trên mọi người nghe.
Before Peter had finished saying these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who were listening to the message.
45 Các tín hữu Do Thái đi theo Phi-e-rơ đều kinh ngạc vì dân ngoại cũng nhận được ân tứ của Chúa Thánh Linh.
Those converts from Judaism, who had come with Peter, were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been bestowed even on the Gentiles;
46 Họ nghe những người ấy nói ngoại ngữ và tôn vinh Đức Chúa Trời. Phi-e-rơ hỏi:
for they heard them speaking in different languages and extolling God. At this Peter asked,
47 “Ai có thể từ chối làm báp-tem bằng nước cho những người này? Vì họ đã nhận lãnh Chúa Thánh Linh cũng như chúng ta.”
‘Can anyone refuse the water for the baptism of these people, now that they have received the Holy Spirit as we did ourselves?’
48 Vậy, ông làm báp-tem cho họ nhân danh Chúa Cứu Thế Giê-xu. Sau đó họ mời ông ở lại thêm vài ngày.
And he directed that they should be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ; after which they asked him to stay there a few days longer.
