1 Ліпший черствий кусок зо споко́єм, ніж дім, повний у́чти м'ясної зо сваркою.
Better is a dry morsel, and quietness with it, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.
2 Раб розумний панує над сином безпутнім, і серед братів він поділить спа́док.
A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
3 Для срі́бла — топи́льна посу́дина, а го́рно — для золота, Господь же серця випробо́вує.
The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.
4 Лиходій слухається уст безбожних, слухає неправдомо́в язика лиході́йного.
A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.
5 Хто сміється з убогого, той ображає свого Творця, хто радіє з нещастя, — не буде такий без вини.
He that mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
6 Корона для ста́рших — ону́ки, а пишно́та дітей — їхні батьки́.
Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children is their fathers.
7 Не присто́йна безумному мова поважна, а тим більше шляхе́тному — мова брехли́ва.
Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
8 Хабар в о́чах його власника́ — самоцві́т: до всьо́го, до чого пове́рнеться, буде щасти́ти йому́.
A bribe is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: wherever it turneth, it prospereth.
9 Хто шукає любови — провину ховає, хто ж про неї повто́рює, розго́нює дру́зів.
He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.
10 На розумного більше впливає одне остере́ження, як на глупака́ сто ударів.
A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
11 Злий шукає лише неслухня́ности, та вісник жорстокий на нього пошлеться.
An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
12 Ліпше спітка́ти обезді́тнену ведмедицю, що кидається на люди́ну, аніж нерозумного в глупо́ті його.
Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
13 Хто відплачує злом за добро, — не відступить лихе з його дому.
Whoever rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
14 Почин сварки — то про́рив води, тому перед ви́бухом сварки покинь ти її!
The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore withdraw from contention, before it be meddled with.
15 Хто оправдує несправедливого, і хто засуджує праведного, — оби́два вони Господе́ві оги́дні.
He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.
16 На́що ті гроші в руці нерозумного, щоб мудрість купити, як мо́зку нема?
Why is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?
17 Правдивий друг любить за всякого ча́су, в недолі ж він робиться братом.
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
18 Люди́на, позба́влена розуму, ру́читься, — пору́ку дає за друга свого.
A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
19 Хто сварку кохає, той любить гріх; хто ж підвищує уста свої, той шукає нещастя.
He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
20 Люди́на лукавого серця не зна́йде добра, хто ж лука́вить своїм язико́м, упаде в зло.
He that hath a perverse heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
21 Хто родить безумного, родить на смуток собі, і не поті́шиться батько безглуздого.
He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
22 Серце радісне добре лікує, а пригно́блений дух сушить ко́сті.
A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
23 Безбожний таємно бере хабара́, щоб зігнути путі правосу́ддя.
A wicked man taketh a bribe out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
24 З обличчям розумного — мудрість, а очі глупця́ — аж на кінці землі.
Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
25 Нерозумний син — смуток для батька, для своєї ж родительки — гі́ркість.
A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.
26 Не добре карати справедливого, бити шляхе́тних за щирість!
Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
27 Хто слова́ свої стримує, той знає пізна́ння, і холоднокро́вний — розумна люди́на.
He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
28 І глупа́к, як мовчить, уважається мудрим, а як у́ста свої закриває — розумним.
Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
