Екклезіяст 5
1 Пильнуй за ногою своєю, як до Божого дому йдеш, бо прийти, щоб послухати, — це краще за жертву безглуздих, бо не знають нічо́го вони, окрім чи́нення зла!
Guard your step when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.
2 Не квапся своїми уста́ми, і серце твоє нехай не поспішає казати слова́ перед Божим лицем, — Бог бо на небі, а ти на землі, тому́ то нехай нечисле́нними будуть слова́ твої!
Do not be rash with your mouth, and do not let your heart be hasty to utter anything before God; for God is in heaven, and you on earth. Therefore let your words be few.
3 Бо як сон наступає через велику роботу, так багато слів має і голос безглу́здого.
For as a dream comes with a multitude of cares, so a fool's speech with a multitude of words.
4 Коли зробиш обі́тницю Богові, то не зволікай її виповнити, бо в Нього нема уподо́бання до нерозумних, а що́ ти обі́туєш, спо́вни!
When you vow a vow to God, do not defer to pay it; for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay that which you vow.
5 Краще не дати обі́ту, ніж дати обіт — і не спо́внити!
It is better that you should not vow, than that you should vow and not pay.
6 Не давай своїм у́стам впроваджувати своє тіло у гріх, і не говори перед Анголом Божим: „Це помилка!“Пощо Бог буде гні́ватися на твій голос, і діла́ твоїх рук буде нищити?
Do not allow your mouth to lead you into sin. Do not protest before the messenger that this was a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice, and destroy the work of your hands?
7 Бо марно́та в числе́нності снів, як і в мно́гості слів, але ти бійся Бога!
For in the multitude of dreams there are vanities, as well as in many words: but you must fear God.
8 Якщо ти побачиш у кра́ї якому ути́скування бідаря́ та пору́шення права та правди, не дивуйся тій речі, бо високий пильнує згори́ над високим, а над ними Всевишній.
If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of justice and righteousness in a district, do not marvel at the matter: for one official is eyed by a higher one; and there are officials over them.
9 І пожи́ток землі є для всіх, бо поле й сам цар обробляє.
Moreover the profit of the earth is for all. The king profits from the field.
10 Хто срі́бло кохає, той не наси́титься сріблом, хто ж кохає багатство з прибу́тком, це марно́та також!
He who loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he who loves abundance, with increase: this also is vanity.
11 Як маєток примно́жується, то мно́жаться й ті, що його поїдають, і яка ко́ристь його власникові, як тільки, щоб бачили очі його?
When goods increase, those who eat them are increased; and what advantage is there to its owner, except to feast on them with his eyes?
12 Сон солодкий в трудя́щого, чи багато, чи мало він їсть, а ситість багатого спати йому не дає.
The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, whether he eats little or much; but the abundance of the rich will not allow him to sleep.
13 Є лихо болюче, я бачив під сонцем його: багатство, яке береже́ться його власнико́ві на лихо йому, —
There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun: wealth kept by its owner to his harm.
14 і гине багатство таке в нещасли́вім випа́дку, а ро́диться син — і немає нічого у нього в руці:
Those riches perish by misfortune, and if he has fathered a son, there is nothing in his hand.
15 як він вийшов наги́й із утро́би матері своєї, так відхо́дить ізнов, як прийшов, і нічо́го не винесе він з свого тру́ду, що можна б узяти своєю рукою!
As he came forth from his mother's womb, naked shall he go again as he came, and shall take nothing for his labor, which he may carry away in his hand.
16 І це те́ж зло болюче: так само, як він був прийшов, так віді́йде, — і яка йому ко́ристь, що трудився на вітер?
This also is a grievous evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go. And what profit does he have who labors for the wind?
17 А до того всі дні свої їв у темно́ті, і багато мав смутку, й хвороби та люті.
All his days are in darkness and mourning, he is frustrated, and has sickness and wrath.
18 Оце, що я бачив, як добре та гарне: щоб їла люди́на й пила, і щоб бачила добре в усьо́му своє́му труді́, що під сонцем ним тру́диться в час нечисле́нних тих днів свого віку, які Бог їй дав, — бо це доля її!
Look, that which I have seen to be good and proper is for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy good in all his labor, in which he labors under the sun, all the days of his life which God has given him; for this is his portion.
19 Також кожна люди́на, що Бог дав їй багатство й маєтки, і вла́ду їй дав спожива́ти із то́го, та брати свою частку та тішитися своїм тру́дом, — то це Божий дару́нок!
Every man also to whom God has given riches and wealth, and has given him power to eat of it, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God.
20 Бо вона днів свого життя небагато на пам'яті матиме, — то Бог в її серце шле радість!
For he shall not often reflect on the days of his life; because God occupies him with the joy of his heart.
