< Saame 78 >

1 Ko e Saame akonaki ʻa ʻAsafi. Fakafanongo ʻa hoku kakai ki heʻeku akonaki: fakatokangaʻi homou telinga ki he ngaahi lea ʻa hoku ngutu.
An Instructive Psalm. Asaph’s. Give ear, O my people, to mine instruction, Bend your ear to the sayings of my mouth;
2 Te u mafaʻa hoku ngutu ʻi he fakatātā: te u fakahā ʻae ngaahi lea fufū mei muʻa:
I will open, in a parable, my mouth, I will pour forth enigmas out of antiquity; —
3 ‌ʻAia kuo tau fanongo ki ai pea ʻiloʻi, pea naʻe tala ia kiate kitautolu ʻe heʻetau ngaahi tamai.
Which we have heard, and come to know, And, our fathers, have recounted to us;
4 ‌ʻE ʻikai te tau fufū ia mei heʻenau fānau, ka ʻe fakahā ki he toʻutangata ʻe hoko ʻae ongoongolelei ʻo Sihova, mo hono mālohi, mo e ngaahi ngāue mana naʻa ne fai.
We will not withhold [them] from their children, To a later generation, recounting the praises of Yahweh, Even his might and his wonders which he wrought;
5 He naʻa ne fokotuʻumaʻu ʻae fono ʻia Sēkope, ʻo ne tuʻutuʻuni ʻae akonaki ʻi ʻIsileli, ʻaia naʻa ne fekauʻi ʻetau ngaahi tamai, koeʻuhi ke nau fakaʻilo ia ki heʻenau fānau:
When he set up a testimony in Jacob, And, a law, appointed in Israel, —Which he commanded our fathers, That they might make them known to their children;
6 Koeʻuhi ke ʻilo ia ʻe he toʻutangata ʻe hoko, ʻio, ʻae fānau ʻe fanauʻi; ʻaia tenau tupu hake ʻo fakahā ia ki heʻenau fānau:
To the end, A later generation, might come to know, Children who should be born, Who should arise, and recount [them] to their children;
7 Koeʻuhi kenau ʻamanaki lelei maʻuaipē ki he ʻOtua, pea ʻoua naʻa fakangalongaloʻi ʻae ngaahi ngāue ʻae ʻOtua, ka e tauhi ʻene ngaahi fekau:
That they might set, in Elohim, their confidence, —And not forget the doings of El, But, his commandments, might observe;
8 Kaeʻoua naʻa tatau mo ʻenau ngaahi tamai, ko e toʻutangata paongataʻa mo angatuʻu; ko e toʻutangata naʻe ʻikai tenau teuteu honau loto ke lelei, pea naʻe ʻikai tuʻumaʻu honau laumālie ʻi he ʻOtua.
And not become, like their fathers, a generation stubborn and rebellious, —A generation that fixed not their heart, Neither was their spirit, faithful with GOD.
9 Ko e fānau ʻa ʻIfalemi naʻe toʻo mahafutau, mo e ngaahi kaufana, naʻa nau hola ʻi he ʻaho ʻoe tau.
The sons of Ephraim—armed bowmen, Turned in the day of battle;
10 Naʻe ʻikai tenau fai ki he fuakava ʻae ʻOtua, pea naʻe ʻikai siʻi tenau loto ke ʻaʻeva ʻi heʻene akonaki;
They kept not the covenant of God, And, in his law, refused to walk;
And forgat His doings, And his wonders which he had showed them:
12 Naʻa ne fai ʻae ngaahi meʻa fakaofo ʻi he ʻao ʻo ʻenau ngaahi tamai, ʻi he fonua ko ʻIsipite, ʻi he ngoue ʻo Soani.
In presence of their fathers, wrought he, wondrously, —In the land of Egypt—the field of Zoan:
13 Naʻe vaeua ʻe ia ʻae tahi, pea ne pule kenau ʻalu atu ai; pea ne ngaohi ʻae tahi ke tuʻu fakatafungofunga pē.
He clave the sea, and caused them to pass through, And reared up the waters like a mound;
14 Naʻa ne tataki foki ʻakinautolu ʻi he ʻaho ʻaki ʻae ʻao, pea ʻi he pō ʻaki ʻae maama ʻoe afi.
And led them, by a cloud, in the daytime, And all the night, by a light of fire;
15 Naʻe fahiʻi ʻe ia ʻae ngaahi makatuʻu ʻi he toafa, pea ʻange ʻae inu kiate kinautolu ʻo hangē ʻoku mei he loloto lahi.
He used to cleave rocks in the desert, And let them drink as out of mighty deeps;
And he brought forth streams out of the cliff, And caused waters to flow down, like rivers.
17 Pea naʻa nau toe fai angahala kiate ia, ʻi heʻenau fakahouhau ki he Fungani Māʻolunga ʻi he toafa.
But again, once more sinned they against him, Resisting the Most High in a land of drought:
18 Pea naʻa nau ʻahiʻahiʻi ʻae ʻOtua ʻi honau loto, ʻi heʻenau lea ke maʻu ʻae kakano ʻi heʻenau holi kovi.
They put GOD to the proof in their heart, By asking food to their mind:
19 ‌ʻIo, naʻa nau lauʻikoviʻi ʻae ʻOtua; naʻa nau pehē, “ʻE faʻa teuteu ʻe he ʻOtua ʻae keinangaʻanga ʻi he toafa?
Yea they spake against Elohim, —They said, Can GOD prepare a table in the desert?
ʻE faʻa tokonaki ʻe ia ʻae kakano maʻa hono kakai?”
Lo! he hath smitten a rock, And waters, have gushed out, Yea, torrents, have rushed along, —Food also, can he give? Or provide flesh for his people?
21 Ko ia naʻe fanongo ki ai ʻa Sihova, pea houhau ia: ko ia naʻe tutu ai ʻae afi kia Sēkope, pea naʻe tupu hake foki ʻae tuputāmaki ki ʻIsileli;
Therefore, Yahweh hearkened, and became wroth, —And, a fire, was kindled against Jacob, Moreover also, anger, mounted against Israel;
22 Koeʻuhi naʻe ʻikai tenau tui ki he ʻOtua, pea naʻe ʻikai ha falala ki heʻene fakamoʻui:
Because, They believed not in God, Nor trusted in his salvation;
23 Neongo ʻene fekauʻi ʻae ngaahi ʻao ʻi ʻolunga, mo ʻene toʻo ʻae ngaahi matapā ʻoe langi,
Though he had commanded the skies above, And, the doors of the heavens, had opened;
24 ‌ʻO ne tuku ke tō hifo ʻae mana kiate kinautolu kenau kai, pea ne foaki kiate kinautolu ʻae uite ʻoe langi.
And had rained on them manna to eat, And, the corn of the heavens, had given to them:
25 Naʻe kai ʻe he tangata ʻae meʻakai ʻae kau ʻāngelo: naʻa ne tuku atu ʻae meʻakai kenau mākona ai.
The food of the mighty, each one did eat, Nourishment, sent he them to the full;
26 Naʻe pule ʻe ia ke maʻili ʻae matangi hahake ʻi he langi: pea ne ʻomi mo e matangi tonga ʻi heʻene māfimafi.
He let loose an east wind in the heavens, Then guided he, in his might, a south wind;
27 Naʻe fakatō hifo ʻe ia ʻae kakano kiate kinautolu ʻo tatau mo e efu, mo e fanga manu kapakau ʻo hangē ko e ʻoneʻone ʻoe tahi:
And rained upon them flesh as the dust, And, like the sand of the seas, birds of wing;
And let them fall in the midst of their camp, —Round about their habitations.
So they did eat and were abundantly filled, When, what they longed for, he had brought them: —
30 Naʻe ʻikai te nau mavahe mei heʻenau holi kovi. Ka ʻi he kei ʻi honau ngutu ʻae maʻanga,
They had not turned away from what they had longed for, Yet was their food in their mouth,
31 Naʻe hoko ʻae houhau ʻoe ʻOtua kiate kinautolu, ʻo ne tāmateʻi ʻae fungani kakai sino ʻiate kinautolu, pea ne tā hifo ʻae kau tangata kuo fili ʻi ʻIsileli.
When, the anger of God, mounted against them, And he slew of their vigorous youths, And, the choice young men of Israel, caused he to bow down in death.
32 Naʻe hoko ʻae ngaahi meʻa ni, ka naʻa nau kei fai angahala pē, ʻo ʻikai tui ki heʻene ngaahi ngāue mana.
For all this, sinned they still, And believed not in his wonders;
33 Ko ia naʻa ne fakaʻosi ai honau ngaahi ʻaho ʻi he meʻa vaʻinga pē, mo honau ngaahi taʻu ʻi he mamahi.
So he ended, in a breath, their days, And their years, in a sudden terror!
34 Pea ʻi heʻene tāmateʻi ʻakinautolu, naʻa nau toki kumi kiate ia: ʻonau tafoki ʻo fehuʻi fakavave ki he ʻOtua.
If he slew [of] them, then they sought him, Yea they turned, and did earnestly seek GOD;
35 Pea naʻa nau manatu ko honau maka ʻae ʻOtua, pea ko honau huhuʻi ʻae ʻOtua māʻolunga.
And remembered that, Elohim, was their rock, Yea, EL Most High, their Redeemer:
36 Ka naʻa nau lapu kiate ia ʻi honau ngutu, ʻonau loi kiate ia ʻaki honau ʻelelo.
So they spake him fair with their mouth, And, with their tongue, did promise him falsely;
37 He naʻe ʻikai totonu honau loto kiate ia, pea naʻe ʻikai tenau tuʻumaʻu ʻi heʻene fuakava.
But, their heart, was not fixed with him, Nor were they trusty in his covenant:
38 Ka naʻe fonu ia ʻi he ʻaloʻofa, ʻo ne fakamolemole ʻenau hia, pea naʻe ʻikai fakaʻauha ʻakinautolu: ʻIo, naʻe liunga lahi ʻene fakaafe hono houhau, pea naʻe ʻikai te ne ueʻi hake hono houhau kotoa pē.
Yet, he, full of compassion, would put a propitiatory-covering over iniquity, and not destroy, —Yea, many a time, turned he back his anger, And would not stir up all his wrath.
39 He naʻa ne manatu ko e kakano pē ʻakinautolu; ko e matangi ʻoku mole atu, pea ʻikai toe haʻu.
So then he remembered, That, Flesh, they were, A Wind departing, that returneth not.
40 Naʻe liunga fiha ʻenau fakahouhau kiate ia ʻi he toafa, pea fakamamahiʻi ia ʻi he potu lala!
How often they, Resisted him in the desert, Vexed him, in the waste:
41 ‌ʻIo, naʻa nau foki kimui pea ʻahiʻahiʻi ʻae ʻOtua, ʻonau hūhūmamaʻi ʻae tokotaha māʻoniʻoni ʻo ʻIsileli.
Yea they again put GOD to the test, And, to the Holy One of Israel, caused they sorrow:
42 Naʻe ʻikai tenau manatu ki hono nima, pe ko e ʻaho naʻa ne fakamoʻui ai ʻakinautolu mei he fili.
They remembered not his hand—The day, When he ransomed them from the adversary;
43 Mo ʻene fai ʻene ngaahi fakaʻilonga ʻi ʻIsipite, mo ʻene ngaahi meʻa mana ʻi he ngoue ʻo Soani:
When he set, in Egypt, his signs, And his wonders, in the plain of Zoan;
44 Naʻa ne liliu honau ngaahi vaitafe ko e toto; mo honau ngaahi vai lahi, naʻe ʻikai tenau faʻa inu ai.
When he turned, into blood, their Nile-streams, And, their own rivers, could they not drink;
45 Naʻe fekau atu ʻe ia kiate kinautolu ʻae ngaahi lango kehekehe, ʻaia naʻe keina ʻakinautolu; mo e fanga poto, ʻaia naʻe fakakoviʻi ʻakinautolu.
He sent among them, The gad-fly, and it devoured them, And the frog, and it despoiled them;
46 Naʻe tuku foki ʻe ia ʻae fua ʻo ʻenau ngoue ki he ʻunufe, mo ʻenau ngāue ki he fanga heʻe.
When he gave to the corn-locust their produce, And their toil, to the swarming locust;
47 Naʻa ne tāmateʻi ʻenau ngaahi vaine ʻaki ʻae ʻuhamaka, mo ʻenau ʻakau ko e sukamino ʻaki ʻae momoko lahi.
He killed, with hail, their vine, And their sycomores, with frost:
48 Naʻe tuku foki ʻe ia ʻenau fanga manu ki he ʻuhamaka, mo ʻenau fanga sipi ki he ngaahi faisisili vela.
When he gave up, to hail-storms, their beasts, And their cattle, to pestilent fevers;
49 Naʻe lī ʻe ia ʻae kakaha ʻo ʻene ʻita kiate kinautolu, ʻae houhau lahi, mo e tuputāmaki, mo e mamahi, ʻi heʻene fekau atu kiate kinautolu ʻae kau ʻāngelo ʻoe kovi.
He sent among them the heat of his anger, Wrath and indignation and distress, —A mission of messengers of misfortune:
50 Naʻa ne tofa ʻae hala ki hono houhau; pea naʻe ʻikai te ne fakahaofi ʻenau moʻui mei he mate, ka naʻa ne tukuange ʻenau moʻui ki he mahaki lahi;
He leveled a path for his anger, Withheld not, from death, their soul, But, their life—to the pestilence, he delivered:
51 ‌ʻO ne tāʻi ʻae ʻuluaki fānau kotoa pē ʻi ʻIsipite; ko e fungani mālohi ʻi he ngaahi nofoʻanga ʻo Hami.
So he smote, Every first-born in Egypt, The beginning of their strength, in the tents of Ham;
And he set forth, like sheep, his people, And guided them, like a flock in the desert;
53 Pea naʻe tataki fiemālie atu ʻe ia ʻakinautolu, ko ia naʻe ʻikai ai tenau manavahē: ka naʻe lōmekina ʻe he tahi ʻa honau ngaahi fili.
Yea he led them securely, and they dreaded not, And, their enemies, the sea did cover.
Then brought he them within his own holy bounds, The mountain-range, which his right hand made his own:
55 Naʻe kapusi foki ʻe ia ʻae hiteni mei honau ʻao, ʻo ne vaheʻi kiate kinautolu ʻae tofiʻa ʻaki ʻae afo, pea ne pule ke nofo ʻae ngaahi faʻahinga ʻo ʻIsileli ʻi honau ngaahi fale fehikitaki.
So he drave out, before them, [whole] nations, And allotted them, by line, an inheritance, And caused to dwell, in their own homes, the tribes of Israel.
56 Ka naʻa nau kei ʻahiʻahiʻi mo fakahouhauʻi ʻae ʻOtua fungani māʻolunga, ʻo ʻikai tauhi ʻene ngaahi fekau:
But they tested and resisted God Most High, And, his testimonies, did not observe;
But drew back and dealt treacherously, like their fathers, They turned aside, like deceitful bowmen;
58 Naʻa nau fakahouhau ia ʻaki honau ngaahi potu māʻolunga ʻonau fakafuaʻa ia ʻaki ʻenau ngaahi tamapua kuo tā.
And provoked him to anger with their high places, And, with their images, used to move him to jealousy.
59 Pea ʻi he ongoʻi ʻe he ʻOtua ʻae meʻa ni, naʻe houhau ai ia, ʻo fehiʻa lahi ki ʻIsileli:
God heard and was wroth, And greatly abhorred Israel;
60 Ko ia naʻa ne liʻaki ai ʻae fale fehikitaki ʻo Sailo, ʻae nofoʻanga ko ia naʻe fokotuʻu ʻe ia ʻi he lotolotonga ʻoe kakai;
So he gave up the habitation of Shiloh, The tent he had set up among Men;
Yea he gave up, into captivity, his strength, And his beauty into the hand of an adversary;
And delivered up, to the sword, his people, And, with his own inheritance, was he wroth;
63 Naʻe kai ke ʻosi ʻe he afi honau kau talavou; pea naʻe ʻikai mali ʻenau kau taʻahine.
His young men, were devoured by fire, And, his virgins, were not praised in song;
64 Naʻe tō ʻenau kau taulaʻeiki ʻi he heletā; pea naʻe ʻikai fai ha tangi ʻe honau uaifi.
His priests, by the sword, did fall, And, his widows, were not able to bewail.
65 Pea naʻe toki ʻā ai ʻae ʻEiki ʻo hangē ko ha taha naʻe mohe, pea hangē ko e tangata mālohi ʻoku kalanga ko e meʻa ʻi he uaine.
Then awoke, as one that had slept, Adonay, As a warrior exulting with wine!
66 Pea naʻe taaʻi ʻe ia hono ngaahi fili ʻi honau potu kimui: naʻa ne tuku ʻakinautolu ke manukia maʻuaipē.
So he smote his adversaries in the rear, Reproach age-abiding, laid he upon them.
Howbeit he rejected the tent of Joseph, And, the tribe of Ephraim, did not choose:
68 Ka naʻa ne fili ʻae faʻahinga ʻo Siuta, ko e moʻunga ko Saione ʻaia naʻa ne ʻofa ki ai.
But made choice of the tribe of Judah, The mountain of Zion, which he loved;
And built, like the heights, his sanctuary, Like the earth, he founded it to times age-abiding.
70 Naʻe fili foki ʻe ia ʻa Tevita ko ʻene tamaioʻeiki, ʻo ne toʻo ia mei he ngaahi lotoʻā sipi:
And made choice of David his servant, And took him from among the folds of the sheep:
71 Naʻa ne ʻomi ia mei heʻene muimui ʻi he fanga sipi fefine naʻe talitali pō, ke ne fafanga ʻa Sēkope ko hono kakai, mo ʻIsileli ko hono tofiʻa.
From after the sucking ewes, he brought him in, —To be shepherd to Jacob his people, And to Israel, his inheritance.
72 Pea naʻa ne fafanga ʻakinautolu ʻo fakatatau ki he angatonu ʻo hono loto; ʻo ne tataki ʻakinautolu ʻi he poto ʻo hono nima.
So he did shepherd them, according to the singleness of his heart, And, with the discernment of his hands, used he to guide them.
