Lea Fakatātā 15
1 ʻOku tekeʻi atu ʻae houhau ʻe he tali fakavaivai: ka ʻoku fakatupu ʻae ʻita ʻi he lea fakamamahi.
Anger slays even wise men; yet a submissive answer turns away wrath: but a grievous word stirs up anger.
2 ʻOku ngāue totonu ʻaki ʻae ʻilo ʻe he ʻelelo ʻoe poto: ka ʻoku malingi ʻae vale mei he ngutu ʻoe vale.
The tongue of the wise knows what is good: but the mouth of the foolish tells out evil things.
3 ʻOku ʻi he potu kotoa pē ʻae fofonga ʻo Sihova, ʻo ne ʻafioʻi ʻae kovi mo e lelei.
The eyes of the Lord behold both the evil and the good in every place.
4 Ko e ʻelelo fakamoʻui ko e ʻakau ia ʻoe moʻui: pea ka talangataʻa ia ko e maumau ia ʻoe laumālie.
The wholesome tongue is a tree of life, and he that keeps it shall be filled with understanding.
5 ʻOku fehiʻa ʻae vale ki he akonaki ʻa ʻene tamai: ka ʻoku fakapotopoto ia ʻaia ʻoku tokanga ki he valoki.
A fool scorns his father's instruction; but he that keeps his commandments is more prudent. In abounding righteousness is great strength: but the ungodly shall utterly perish from the earth.
6 ʻOku ai ʻae koloa lahi ʻi he fale ʻoe māʻoniʻoni: ka ʻoku ai ʻae mamahi ʻi he koloa ʻae angahala.
In the houses of the righteous is much strength: but the fruits of the ungodly shall perish.
7 ʻOku tufa atu ʻae poto ʻe he loungutu ʻoe poto: ka ʻoku ʻikai ke fai pehē ʻe he loto ʻoe vale.
The lips of the wise are bound by discretion: but the hearts of the foolish are not safe.
8 Ko e meʻa fakalielia kia Sihova ʻae feilaulau ʻae angahala: ka ko e lotu ʻae angatonu ʻoku ne fiemālie ai.
The sacrifices of the ungodly are an abomination to the Lord; but the prayers of them that walk honestly are acceptable with him.
9 Ko e meʻa fakalielia kia Sihova ʻae hala ʻoe angakovi: ka ʻoku ne ʻofa kiate ia ʻoku muimui ki he māʻoniʻoni.
The ways of an ungodly [man] are an abomination to the Lord; but he loves those that follow after righteousness.
10 Ko e meʻa fakamamahi ʻae tautea kiate ia kuo liʻaki ʻae hala: pea ko ia ʻoku fehiʻa ki he valoki ʻe mate ia.
The instruction of the simple is known by them that pass by; but they that hate reproofs die disgracefully.
11 ʻOku ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova ʻa hētesi pea mo e fakaʻauha: kae muʻa hake ʻae loto ʻoe fānau ʻae tangata! (Sheol h7585)
Hell and destruction are manifest to the Lord; how shall not also be the hearts of men? (Sheol h7585)
12 ʻOku ʻikai ʻofa ʻae tangata manuki kiate ia ʻoku valokiʻi ia: pea ʻoku ʻikai fie ʻalu atu ia ki he poto.
An uninstructed person will not love those that reprove him; neither will he associate with the wise.
13 ʻOku fakafiefiaʻi ʻae mata ʻe he loto ʻoku fiemālie: ka ʻoku maumauʻi ʻae laumālie ʻe he mamahi ʻoe loto.
When the heart rejoices the countenance is cheerful; but when it is in sorrow, [the countenance] is sad.
14 ʻOku kumi ki he poto ʻe he loto ʻoʻona ʻoku faʻa ʻilo: ka ʻoku kai ʻae vale ʻe he ngutu ʻoe kakai vale.
An upright heart seeks discretion; but the mouth of the uninstructed will experience evils.
15 ʻOku kovi ʻae ʻaho kotoa pē ʻonautolu ʻoku mamahi: ka ʻoku fai kātoanga maʻuaipē ia ʻaia ʻoku loto fiemālie.
The eyes of the wicked are always looking for evil things; but the good are always quiet.
16 ʻOku lelei lahi hake ʻae meʻa siʻi mo e manavahē kia Sihova, ʻi he koloa lahi ʻoku maʻu mo e kovi.
Better is a small portion with the fear of the Lord, than great treasures without the fear [of the Lord].
17 ʻOku lelei hake ʻae meʻakai ʻaki ʻae louʻakau pea ai mo e ʻofa, ʻi he kai ha pulu kuo fafanga, kae maʻu mo e fehiʻa.
Better is an entertainment of herbs with friendliness and kindness, than a feast of calves, with enmity.
18 ʻOku fakatupu ʻe he tangata faʻa ʻita ʻae feʻiteʻitani: ka ʻoku lolomi ʻae feʻiteʻitani ʻe ia ʻoku fakatotoka ki he ʻita.
A passionate man stirs up strife; but [he that is] slow to anger appeases even a rising one. A man slow to anger will extinguish quarrels; but an ungodly man rather stirs [them] up.
19 ʻOku tatau ʻae hala ʻoe tangata fakapikopiko mo e ʻā ʻakau talatala: ka ʻoku hangamālie ʻae hala ʻoe māʻoniʻoni.
The ways of sluggards are strewn with thorns; but those of the diligent are made smooth.
20 ʻOku fakafiefiaʻi ʻae tamai ʻe he foha ʻoku poto: ka ʻoku fehiʻa ʻae tangata vale ki heʻene faʻē.
A wise son gladdens [his] father; but a foolish son sneers at his mother.
21 Ko e vale ko e fakafiefia ia kiate ia ʻoku taʻemaʻu ʻae poto: ka ʻoku ʻeveʻeva ʻi he angatonu ʻae tangata ʻoku faʻa ʻilo.
The ways of a foolish man are void of sense; but a wise man proceeds on his way aright.
22 ʻOku ʻikai hoko ʻae ngaahi meʻa kuo tuʻutuʻuni, ko e meʻa ʻi he masiva fakakaukau: ka ʻi he tokolahi hono kau fakakaukauʻi ʻoku toki maʻu ai ia.
They that honour not councils put off deliberation; but counsel abides in the hearts of counsellors.
23 ʻOku maʻu ʻe he tangata ʻae fiefia ʻi he lea ʻa hono ngutu: pea ko e lea ʻoku fai ʻi hono kuonga totonu, hono ʻikai lelei fau ia!
A bad man will by no means attend to counsel; neither will he say anything seasonable, or good for the common [weal].
24 ʻOku māʻolunga ʻae hala ʻoe moʻui kiate kinautolu ʻoku poto, koeʻuhi ke nau hao mei heli ʻoku ʻi lalo. (Sheol h7585)
The thoughts of the wise are ways of life, that he may turn aside and escape from hell. (Sheol h7585)
25 ʻE fakaʻauha ʻe Sihova ʻae fale ʻoe fielahi: ka ʻe fokotuʻumaʻu ʻe ia ʻae kauhala ʻoe fefine kuo mate hono husepāniti.
The Lord pulls down the houses of scorners; but he establishes the border of the widow.
26 Ko e meʻa fakalielia kia Sihova ʻae ngaahi mahalo ʻae angakovi: ka ko e ngaahi lea ʻae māʻoniʻoni ko e ngaahi lea ia ʻoku lelei.
An unrighteous thought is abomination to the Lord; but the sayings of the pure are held in honour.
27 Ko ia ʻoku manumanu ki he koloa, ʻoku fakafiuʻi ʻe ia hono fale ʻoʻona; ka ko ia ʻoku fehiʻa ki he ngaahi meʻa foaki ʻe moʻui ia.
A receiver of bribes destroys himself; but he that hates the receiving of bribes is safe. [By alms and by faithful dealings sins are purged away; ] but by the fear of the Lord every one departs from evil.
28 ʻOku fakakaukau ʻe he loto ʻoe māʻoniʻoni ʻae lea te ne tali ʻaki: ka ʻoku malingi mei he ngutu ʻoe angahala ʻae ngaahi meʻa kovi.
The hearts of the righteous meditate faithfulness; but the mouth of the ungodly answers evil things. The ways of righteous men are acceptable with the Lord; and through them even enemies become friends.
29 ʻOku mamaʻo ʻaupito ʻa Sihova mei he angahala: ka ʻoku ne ongoʻi ʻae lotu ʻae māʻoniʻoni.
God is far from the ungodly; but he hearkens to the prayers of the righteous. Better are small receipts with righteousness, than abundant fruits with unrighteousness. Let the heart of a man think justly, that his steps may be rightly ordered of God. The eye that sees rightly rejoices the heart; and a good report fattens the bones.
30 ʻOku fiefia ʻae loto ʻi he maama ʻoe mata: pea ʻoku tupu ʻi he ongoongolelei ʻae huhuʻa ʻoe hui.
31 Ko e telinga ʻoku fakafanongo ki he valoki fakamoʻui, ʻe nofomaʻu ia ʻi he haʻohaʻonga ʻoe poto.
32 Ko ia ʻoku manuki ki he akonaki, ʻoku ne fehiʻa ki hono laumālie ʻoʻona: ka ko ia ʻoku fanongo ki he valoki, ʻoku maʻu ʻe ia ʻae loto poto.
He that rejects instruction hates himself; but he that mind reproofs loves his soul.
33 Ko e manavahē kia Sihova, ko e akonaki ia ʻoe poto; pea ʻoku muʻomuʻa ʻae angavaivai ʻi he hakeakiʻi.
The fear of the Lord is instruction and wisdom; and the highest honour will correspond therewith.
