1 Pea ko eni, ko e fānau ʻa Lupeni mo e fānau ʻa Kata naʻe lahi ʻaupito ʻenau fanga manu: pea ne nau mamata ki he fonua ko Sesa, mo e fonua ko Kiliati, pea vakai, ko e potu ia ko e potu lelei ki he fanga manu;
And the children of Ruben and the children of Gad had a multitude of cattle, very great; and they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Galaad; and the place was a place for cattle:
2 Pea naʻe haʻu ʻae fānau ʻa Kata mo e fānau ʻa Lupeni ʻonau lea kia Mōsese, mo ʻEliesa ko e taulaʻeiki, mo e houʻeiki ʻoe kakai, ʻonau pehē,
and the children of Ruben and the children of Gad came, and spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, saying,
3 “Ko ʻAtaloti, mo Tiponi, mo Sesa, mo Nimila, mo Hesiponi, mo ʻIliale, mo Sipami, mo Nipo, mo Pioni,
Ataroth, and Daebon, and Jazer, and Namra, and Esebon, and Eleale, and Sebama, and Nabau, and Baean,
4 ‌ʻIo, ko e fonua naʻe taaʻi ʻe Sihova ʻi he ʻao ʻoe kakai ʻo ʻIsileli, ko e fonua ia ki he fanga manu, pea ʻoku ʻi hoʻo kau tamaioʻeiki ʻae fanga manu:
the land which the Lord has delivered up before the children of Israel, is pasture land, and your servants have cattle.
5 Pea ko ia naʻa nau pehē ai, Kapau ʻoku mau ʻilo ʻae ʻofa ʻi ho ʻao, tuku ke foaki ʻae fonua ni ki hoʻo kau tamaioʻeiki ke mau maʻu, pea ʻoua ʻe ʻave ʻakimautolu ki he kauvai ʻe taha ʻo Sioatani.”
And they said, If we have found grace in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession, and do not cause us to pass over Jordan.
6 Pea naʻe pehē ʻe Mōsese ki he fānau ʻa Kata, pea mo e fānau ʻa Lupeni, “ʻE ʻalu homou kāinga ki he tau, ka te mou nofo pe ʻi heni?
And Moses said to the sons of Gad and the sons of Ruben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall you sit here?
7 Pea ko e hā ʻoku mou fakavaivaiʻi ai ʻae loto ʻoe fānau ʻa ʻIsileli ke taʻofi ʻenau ʻalu ki he fonua ʻaia kuo foaki ʻe Sihova kiate kinautolu?
And why do you pervert the minds of the children of Israel, that they should not cross over into the land, which the Lord gives them?
8 Naʻe fai pehē hoʻomou ngaahi tamai ʻi heʻeku fekau ʻakinautolu mei Ketesi-pania kenau mamata ki he fonua.
Did not your fathers thus, when I sent them from Cades Barne to spy out the land?
9 Koeʻuhi ʻi heʻenau ʻalu hake ki he vahaʻa ʻo ʻEsikoli, ʻonau mamata ki he fonua, naʻa nau fakavaivaiʻi ʻae loto ʻoe fānau ʻa ʻIsileli, ke taʻofi ʻenau ʻalu atu ki he fonua ʻaia kuo foaki ʻe Sihova kiate kinautolu.
And they went up to the valley of the cluster, and spied the land, and turned aside the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land, which the Lord gave them.
10 Pea naʻe vela ʻae houhau ʻo Sihova ʻi he ʻaho ko ia, ʻo ne fuakava, ʻo pehē,
And the Lord was very angry in that day, and sware, saying,
11 Ko e moʻoni ko e kau tangata naʻe ʻalu hake mei ʻIsipite, mei he uofulu taʻu ʻo fai hake, ʻe ʻikai tenau mamata ki he fonua ʻaia ne u fuakava ai kia ʻEpalahame, mo ʻAisake, mo Sēkope; koeʻuhi naʻe ʻikai tenau faʻa muimui kiate au:
Surely these men who came up out of Egypt from twenty years old and upward, who know good and evil, shall not see the land which I sware [to give] to Abraam and Isaac and Jacob, for they have not closely followed after me:
12 Ka ko Kelepi ko e foha ʻo Sifune mei he fānau ʻo Kenasi, mo Siosiua ko e foha ʻo Nuni: he naʻa na faʻa muimui kia Sihova.
save Caleb the son of Jephonne, who was set apart, and Joshua the son of Naue, for they closely followed after the Lord.
13 Pea naʻe tutu ʻae houhau ʻo Sihova ki ʻIsileli, ʻo ne pule kenau hē fano pe ʻi he toafa ʻi he taʻu ʻe fāngofulu, kaeʻoua ke ʻauha ʻae toʻutangata kotoa pē naʻe fai meʻa kovi ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova.
And the Lord was very angry with Israel; and for forty years he caused them to wander in the wilderness, until all the generation which did evil in the sight of the Lord was extinct.
14 Pea vakai, kuo mou tuʻu hake ke fetongi hoʻomou ngaahi tamai, ko e fakatokolahi ʻoe kau tangata angahala, ke fakaʻāsili ʻae houhau vela ʻa Sihova ki ʻIsileli
Behold, you are risen up in the room of your fathers, a combination of sinful men, to increase yet farther the fierce wrath of the Lord against Israel.
15 He kapau te mou foki mei he muimui kiate ia, te ne toe tukuange ʻakinautolu ʻi he toafa; pea ʻe ʻauha ʻae kakai ni kotoa pē ʻiate kimoutolu.”
For you will turn away from him to desert him yet once more in the wilderness, and you will sin against this whole congregation.
16 Pea naʻa nau ʻunuʻunu mai kiate ia, ʻonau pehē, “Te mau langa ʻi heni ʻae ngaahi lotoʻā sipi ki heʻemau fanga manu, mo e ngaahi kolo ki heʻemau fānau iiki.
And they came to him, and said, We will build here folds for our cattle, and cities for our possessions;
17 Ka te mau ʻalu ʻakimautolu ʻo muʻomuʻa mo e mahafu ʻi he fānau ʻa ʻIsileli, kaeʻoua ke mau ʻomi ʻakinautolu ki honau potu: pea ʻe nofo ʻemau fānau iiki ʻi he ngaahi kolo ʻoku lotoʻā koeʻuhi ko e kakai ʻoe fonua.
and we will arm ourselves and go as an advanced guard before the children of Israel, until we shall have brought them into their place; and our possessions shall remain in walled cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
18 ‌ʻE ʻikai te mau foki ki homau ngaahi fale kaeʻoua ke maʻu ʻe he fānau ʻa ʻIsileli ʻe he tangata taki taha ʻa honau tofiʻa.
We will not return to our houses till the children of Israel shall have been distributed, each to his own inheritance.
19 Koeʻuhi ʻe ʻikai te mau nofo fakataha mo kinautolu ʻi he kauvai ʻo Sioatani, pe ki kō atu; koeʻuhi kuo tō homau tofiʻa kiate kimautolu ʻi he kauvai ʻo Sioatani ki he potu hahake ni.
And we will not any longer inherit with them from the other side of Jordan and onwards, because we have our full inheritance on the side beyond Jordan eastward.
20 Pea naʻe pehē ʻe Mōsese kiate kinautolu, “Kapau te mou fai ʻae meʻa ni, pea kapau te mou ō mo e mahafu ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova ke tau,
And Moses said to them, If you will do according to these words, if you will arm yourselves before the Lord for battle,
21 Pea kapau te mou ō kotoa pē mo e mahafu ʻo aʻa ʻi Sioatani ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova, kaeʻoua ke ne kapusi ʻa hono ngaahi fili mei hono ʻao,
and every one of you will pass over Jordan fully armed before the Lord, until his enemy be destroyed from before his face,
22 Pea ʻe vaivai ʻae fonua ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova: pea hili ia te mou foki taʻehalaia ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova, mo e ʻao ʻo ʻIsileli; pea ko e fonua ni ko homou nofoʻanga ia ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova.
and the land shall be subdued before the Lord, then afterwards you shall return, and be guiltless before the Lord, and as regards Israel; and this land shall be to you for a possession before the Lord.
23 Pea kapau ʻe ʻikai te mou fai pehē, vakai, kuo mou angahala ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova: pea mou ʻilo pau eni ʻe moʻua ʻakimoutolu ʻi hoʻomou angahala.
But if you will not do so, you will sin against the Lord; and you shall know your sin, when afflictions shall come upon you.
24 Mou langa ʻae ngaahi kolo ki hoʻomou fānau iiki, mo e ngaahi lotoʻā ki hoʻomou fanga sipi; pea mou fai ʻaia kuo lea ʻaki ʻe homou ngutu.”
And you shall build for yourselves cities for your store, and folds for your cattle; and you shall do that which proceeds out of your mouth.
25 Pea naʻe lea ʻae fānau ʻa Kata mo e fānau ʻa Lupeni kia Mōsese, ʻonau pehē, “ʻE fai ʻe hoʻo kau tamaioʻeiki ʻo hangē ko e fekau ʻa ʻemau ʻeiki.
And the sons of Ruben and the sons of Gad spoke to Moses, saying, Your servants will do as our lord commands.
26 Ko ʻemau fānau iiki, mo homau ngaahi uaifi, mo ʻemau fanga sipi, mo ʻemau fanga manu kotoa pē, tenau nofo ai ʻi he ngaahi kolo ʻo Kiliati:
Our store, and our wives, and all our cattle shall be in the cities of Galaad.
27 Ka ʻe ʻalu atu ʻa hoʻo kau tamaioʻeiki, ʻae tangata taki taha mo ʻene mahafu ke tau ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova, ʻo hangē ko e lea ʻa ʻeku ʻeiki.”
But your servants will go over all armed and set in order before the Lord to battle, as [our] lord says.
28 Pea naʻe fekau ʻe Mōsese kia ʻEliesa ko e taulaʻeiki, mo Siosiua ko e foha ʻo Nuni, pea mo e kau mātuʻa ʻi he ngaahi faʻahinga ʻoe fānau ʻa ʻIsileli, koeʻuhi ko kinautolu:
And Moses appointed to them [for judges] Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Naue, and the chiefs of the families of the tribes of Israel.
29 Pea naʻe pehē ʻe Mōsese kiate kinautolu, “Kapau ʻe aʻa ʻi Sioatani ʻae fānau ʻa Kata mo e fānau ʻa Lupeni mo kimoutolu, ʻae tangata taki taha mo e mahafu ke tau ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova, pea ʻe vaivai ʻae fonua ʻi homou ʻao; te mou toki foaki kiate kinautolu ʻae fonua ko Kiliati ke nau nofo ai.
And Moses said to them, If the sons of Ruben and the sons of Gad will pass over Jordan with you, every one armed for war before the Lord, and you shall subdue the land before you, then you shall give to them the land of Galaad for a possession.
But if they will not pass over armed with you to war before the Lord, then shall you cause to pass over their possessions and their wives and their cattle before you into the land of Chanaan, and they shall inherit with you in the land of Chanaan.
31 Pea naʻe leaange ʻae fānau ʻa Kata mo e fānau ʻa Lupeni, ʻonau pehē, “ʻE hangē ko e folofola ʻa Sihova ki hoʻo kau tamaioʻeiki, ʻe pehē pe ʻemau fai.
And the sons of Ruben and the sons of Gad answered, saying, Whatsoever the Lord says to his servants, that will we do.
32 Te mau aʻa mo e mahafu ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova ki he fonua ko Kēnani, koeʻuhi ke tō ai kiate kimautolu ʻa homau tofiʻa ʻi he kauvai ki heni ʻo Sioatani.”
We will go over armed before the Lord into the land of Chanaan, and you shall give us our inheritance beyond Jordan.
33 Pea naʻe foaki ʻe Mōsese kiate kinautolu, ʻio, ki he fānau ʻa Kata, mo e fānau ʻa Lupeni, pea mo e vaeua ʻoe faʻahinga ʻo Manase ko e foha ʻo Siosefa, ʻae puleʻanga ʻo Sihoni ko e tuʻi ʻoe kau ʻAmoli, mo e puleʻanga ʻo Oki ko e tuʻi ʻo Pesani, ʻae fonua, mo hono ngaahi kolo ʻi he mata fonua, ʻio, ʻae ngaahi kolo ʻoe fonua ʻoku takatakai.
And Moses gave to them, even to the sons of Gad and the sons of Ruben, and to the half tribe of Manasse of the sons of Joseph, the kingdom of Seon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Basan, the land and its cities with its coasts, the cities of the land round about.
34 Pea naʻe langa ʻe he fānau ʻa Kata ʻa Tiponi, mo ʻAtaloti, mo ʻAloeli.
And the sons of Gad built Daebon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
35 Mo ʻAtiloti, mo Sofani, mo Sesa, mo Sokipa,
and Sophar, and Jazer, and they set them up,
36 Pea mo Petenimila, mo Petehalani, ko e ngaahi kolo lotoʻā: mo e ngaahi lotoʻā ki he fanga sipi.
and Namram, and Baetharan, strong cities, and folds for sheep.
37 Pea naʻe langa ʻe he fānau ʻa Lupeni ʻa Hesiponi, mo ʻIliale, mo Kesatemi,
And the sons of Ruben built Esebon, and Eleale, and Kariatham,
38 Pea mo Nipo, mo Peali-mioni, (kuo liliu honau hingoa), mo Sipima: ʻonau fakahingoa kehe ʻae ngaahi kolo naʻa nau langa.
and Beelmeon, surrounded [with walls], and Sebama; and they called the names of the cities which they built, after their own names.
39 Pea naʻe ʻalu ʻae fānau ʻa Mekili ko e foha ʻo Manase ki Kiliati, ʻo maʻu ia, ʻonau kapusi ʻae kau ʻAmoli naʻe ʻi ai.
And a son of Machir the son of Manasse went to Galaad, and took it, and destroyed the Amorite who lived in it.
40 Pea naʻe foaki ʻe Mōsese ʻa Kiliati kia Mekili ko e foha ʻo Manase; pea naʻe nofo ia ʻi ai.
And Moses gave Galaad to Machir the son of Manasse, and he lived there.
41 Pea naʻe ʻalu ʻa Saili ko e foha ʻo Manase ʻo ne kapa hono ngaahi potu kakai siʻi, ʻo ui ia ko Havotisaili.
And Jair the [son] of Manasse went and took their villages, and called them the villages of Jair.
42 Pea naʻe ʻalu ʻa Nopa ʻo ne kapa ʻa Kinati, mo hono ngaahi potu kakai siʻi, ʻo ne fakahingoa ia ki hono hingoa ʻoʻona ko Nopa.
And Nabau went and took Caath and her villages, and called them Naboth after his name.
