Mātiu 16
1 Pea haʻu kiate ia ʻae kau Fālesi mo e Sātusi, ʻo ʻahiʻahiʻi ia ʻi heʻenau holi ke ne fakahā kiate kinautolu ha fakaʻilonga mei he langi.
Here the Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and, to test Jesus, requested him to show them some sign from the heavens.
2 Pea lea ia, ʻo pehēange kiate kinautolu, “ʻOka efiafi, ʻoku mou pehē, ‘ʻE ʻafua he ʻoku kulokula ʻae langi.’
But Jesus answered, “In the evening you say ‘It will be fine weather, for the sky is as red as fire.’
3 Pea pongipongi ai, ‘ʻE ʻalotāmaki ʻae ʻaho ni, he ʻoku kulokula mo fetautauʻi ʻae langi.’ ʻAe kau mālualoi! ʻOku mou faʻa ʻilo ki he mata ʻoe langi; ka ʻe ʻikai te mou faʻa [ʻilo ]ʻae ngaahi fakaʻilonga ʻoe kuonga [ni]?
But in the morning you say ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is as red as fire and threatening.’ You learn to read the sky; yet you are unable to read the signs of the times!
4 Ko e toʻutangata angakovi mo feʻauaki ʻoku kumi ʻae fakaʻilonga; pea ʻe ʻikai ha fakaʻilonga ʻe ʻoatu ki ai, ka ko e fakaʻilonga pe ʻoe palōfita ko Siona.” Pea tukuange ʻe ia ʻakinautolu, kae ʻalu.
A wicked and unfaithful generation is asking for a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and went away.
5 Pea kuo hoko ʻene kau ākonga ki he kauvai ʻe taha, kuo ngalo ʻiate kinautolu ke ʻomi ʻae mā.
Now the disciples had crossed to the opposite shore, and had forgotten to take any bread.
6 Pea pehē ʻe Sisu kiate kinautolu, “Mou vakai telia ʻae meʻa fakatupu ʻae kau Fālesi pea mo e Satusi.”
Presently Jesus said to them, “Take care and be on your guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
7 Pea naʻa nau fealēleaʻaki ʻo pehē, “Ko e meʻa ʻi he ʻikai te tau ʻomi ha mā.”
But the disciples began talking among themselves about their having brought no bread.
8 Pea kuo ʻilo ʻe Sisu, pea pehē ʻe ia kiate kinautolu, “ʻAkimoutolu ʻoku siʻi hoʻomou tui, ko e hā ʻoku mou fealēleaʻaki ai, ʻi hoʻomou taʻeʻomi ha mā?
On noticing this, Jesus said, “Why are you talking among yourselves about your being short of bread, you of little faith?
9 ʻOku ʻikai te mou ʻilo, pe manatu ki he foʻi mā ʻe nima ki he toko nima afe, mo e kato ʻe fiha naʻa mou ʻave?
Don’t you yet see, nor remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took away?
10 Pe ki he foʻi mā ʻe fitu ki he toko fā afe, mo e kato ʻe fiha naʻa mou ʻave?
Nor yet the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you took away?
11 Ko e hā ʻoku ʻikai ai te mou ʻilo naʻe ʻikai [ko e lea ]ki he mā ʻa ʻeku pehē kiate kimoutolu, Mou vakai telia ʻae meʻa fakatupu ʻae kau Fālesi pea mo e Sātusi?”
How is it that you do not see that I was not speaking about bread? Be on your guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
12 Pea ne nau toki ʻilo naʻe ʻikai ko ʻene tala ke nau vakai telia ʻae meʻa fakatupu ʻoe mā, ka ko e akonaki ʻae kau Fālesi mo e kau Sātusi.
Then they understood that he had told them to be on their guard, not against the leaven of bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
13 Pea ʻi he hoko ʻa Sisu ki he potu ʻo Sesalia ʻi Filipai, naʻe fehuʻi ia ki heʻene kau ākonga, ʻo pehē, “ʻOku pehē ʻe he kakai pe ko hai au ko e Foha ʻoe tangata?”
On coming into the region of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked his disciples this question – “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
14 Pea nau pehē, “[ʻOku lea ]ʻae niʻihi, ko Sione ko e Papitaiso; ko e niʻihi, ko ʻIlaisiā; mo e niʻihi, ko Selemaia, pe ha taha ʻoe kau palōfita.”
“Some say John the Baptist,” they answered, “Others, however, say that he is Elijah, while others again say Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.”
15 Pea pehēange ʻe ia kiate kinautolu, “Ka ʻoku pehē ʻekimoutolu ko hai au?”
“But you,” he said, “who do you say that I am?”
16 Pea lea ʻa Saimone Pita, ʻo pehēange, “Ko koe ko e Kalaisi, ko e ʻAlo ʻoe ʻOtua moʻui.”
To this Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17 Pea lea ʻa Sisu, ʻo pehēange kiate ia, “Saimone Pāsiona, ʻoku ke monūʻia: he naʻe ʻikai fakahā ia kiate koe ʻe he kakano mo e toto, ka ko ʻeku Tamai ʻoku ʻi he langi.
“Blessed are you, Simon, Son of Jonah,” Jesus replied. “For no human being has revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
18 Pea ʻoku ou tala atu foki kiate koe, Ko Pita koe, pea te u langa hoku siasi ki he maka ni; pea ʻe ʻikai lavaʻi ia ʻe he ngaahi matapā ʻo hētesi. (Hadēs g86)
Yes, and I say to you, your name is ‘Peter’ – a Rock, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail over it. (Hadēs g86)
19 Pea te u ʻoatu kiate koe ʻae kī ʻoe puleʻanga ʻoe langi: pea ko ia kotoa pē te ke nonoʻo ʻi māmani, ʻe nonoʻo ia ʻi he langi; pea ko ia te ke veteki ʻi māmani, ʻe veteki ia ʻi he langi.”
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be held in heaven to be forbidden, and whatever you allow on earth will be held in heaven to be allowed.”
20 Pea naʻa ne toki fekau ki heʻene kau ākonga, ke ʻoua naʻa nau fakahā ki ha tokotaha ko Sisu ia ko e Kalaisi.
Then he charged his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.
21 Pea talu mei he ʻaho ko ia naʻe kamata fakahā ai ʻe Sisu ki heʻene kau ākonga, “ʻE ʻalu ia ki Selūsalema, pea ne kātaki ʻae ngaahi meʻa lahi ʻi he kau mātuʻa, mo e kau taulaʻeiki lahi, mo e kau tangata tohi, pea ʻe tāmateʻi ia, pea toe fokotuʻu ʻi hono ʻaho tolu.”
At that time Jesus Christ began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, and undergo much suffering at the hands of the elders, and chief priests, and teachers of the Law, and be put to death, and rise on the third day.
22 Ka ka ʻave ia ʻe Pita, ʻo kamata valokiʻi ia, ʻo pehē, “Ke mamaʻo ia ʻiate koe, ʻEiki: ʻe ʻikai hoko eni kiate koe.”
But Peter took Jesus aside, and began to rebuke him. “Master,” he said, “please God that will never be your fate!”
23 Ka naʻe tafoki ia, ʻo ne pehē kia Pita, “ʻAlu ki hoku tuʻa, Sētane: ko e fakahala koe kiate au: he ʻoku ʻikai te ke leleiʻia ʻi he meʻa ʻae ʻOtua, ka ʻi he meʻa ʻae tangata.”
Jesus, however, turning to Peter, said, “Out of my way, Satan! You are a hindrance to me; for you look at things, not as God does, but as person does.”
24 Pea toki pehē ai ʻe Sisu ki heʻene kau ākonga, “Kapau ʻe muimui ha taha ʻiate au, tuku ke ne liʻaki ʻe ia ia, pea toʻo hake ʻene ʻakau māfasia ʻo muimui ʻiate au.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wishes to walk in my steps, they must renounce self, and take up their cross, and follow me.
25 He ko ia ʻe kalofaki ʻene moʻui, ʻe mole ia: pea ko ia ʻe mole ʻene moʻui koeʻuhi ko au, te ne maʻu ia.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, and whoever, for my sake, loses his life will find it.
26 He ko e hā hono ʻaonga ki he tangata, ʻo kapau te ne maʻu ʻa māmani kotoa pē, kae mole ai hono laumālie ʻoʻona; pe ko e hā ʻe foaki ʻe ha tangata ke fetongi ʻaki hono laumālie?
What good will it do a person to gain the whole world, if he forfeits his life? Or what will a person give that is of equal value with his life?
27 He ko e Foha ʻoe tangata ʻe haʻu ia ʻi he nāunau ʻo ʻene Tamai mo ʻene kau ʻāngelo; pea te ne toki totongi ai ki he tangata kotoa pē ʻo fakatatau ki heʻene ngāue.
For the Son of Man is to come in his Father’s glory, with his angels, and then he will give to everyone what his actions deserve.
28 Ko ʻeku tala moʻoni atu kiate kimoutolu, ʻOku tutuʻu ʻae niʻihi ʻi heni, ʻe ʻikai te nau kamata ʻae mate, kaeʻoua ke nau vakai ki he Foha ʻoe tangata ʻoku haʻu ʻi hono puleʻanga.”
I tell you, some of those who are standing here will not know death until they have seen the Son of Man coming into his kingdom.”
