Tangilāulau 1

1 ‌ʻOiau! ʻAe nofo lala pe ʻae kolo ʻaia naʻe pito ʻi he kakai! Kuo ne hoko ʻo hangē ko e fefine kuo mate hono ʻunoho! Ko ia, ʻaia naʻe lahi ʻi he ngaahi puleʻanga, pea hangē ko e ʻeiki fefine ki he ngaahi potu puleʻanga, kuo hoko ia ko e fai tukuhau!

And it came to pass, after Israel was taken captive, and Jerusalem made desolate, [that] Jeremias sat weeping, and lamented [with] this lamentation over Jerusalem, and said, ALEPH. How does the city that was filled with people sit solitary! she is become as a widow: she that was magnified amongst the nations, [and] princess amongst the provinces, has become tributary.

2 ‌ʻOku ne tangi mamahi ʻi he pō, pea ʻoku ʻi hono kouʻahe ʻa hono loʻimata; ʻi heʻene ngaahi kaumeʻa kotoa pē, ʻoku ʻikai ha taha ke fakafiemālie ia: kuo fai kākā ʻa ʻene ngaahi kaumeʻa kotoa pē kiate ia, kuo nau hoko ko hono ngaahi fili.

BETH. She weeps sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks; and there is none of all her lovers to comfort her: all that were her friends have dealt deceitfully with her, they are become her enemies.

3 Kuo ʻalu ʻa Siuta ki he pōpula, koeʻuhi ko e mamahi pea koeʻuhi ko e ngāue lahi: ʻoku ne nofo mo e hiteni, ʻoku ʻikai te ne ʻilo ha fiemālie: naʻe maʻu ia ʻe he kau fakatanga kotoa pē ʻi he ngaahi potu lausiʻi.

GIMEL. Judea is gone into captivity by reason of her affliction, and by reason of the abundance of her servitude: she dwells amongst the nations, she has not found rest: all her pursuers have overtaken her between her oppressors.

4 ‌ʻOku tangi ʻae ngaahi hala ʻo Saione, koeʻuhi ʻoku ʻikai ha niʻihi ke haʻu ki he ngaahi kātoanga mamafa: ʻoku lala hono ngaahi matapā kotoa pē: ʻoku mafulu ʻene kau taulaʻeiki, ʻoku mamahiʻia ʻene kau tāupoʻou, pea ʻoku ne ʻi he kona.

DALETH. The ways of Sion mourn, because there are none that come to the feast: all her gates are ruined: her priests groan, her virgins are led captive, and she is in bitterness in herself.

5 ‌ʻOku māʻolunga ʻa hono ngaahi fili, ʻoku tupu lelei hono ngaahi fili; he kuo fakamamahiʻi ia ʻe Sihova koeʻuhi ko e lahi ʻo ʻene ngaahi angahala: kuo ʻalu ʻene fānau ki he pōpula ʻi he ʻao ʻoe fili.

HE. Her oppressors are become the head, and her enemies have prospered; for the Lord has afflicted her because of the multitude of her sins: her young children are gone into captivity before the face of the oppressor.

6 Pea kuo mole ʻae hoihoifua kotoa pē mei he ʻofefine ʻo Saione: kuo hoko ʻa ʻene ngaahi houʻeiki ʻo hangē ko e fanga haʻate ʻoku ʻikai ke ʻilo ha potu ke kai, pea kuo nau hola taʻehamālohi ʻi he ʻao ʻo ia ʻoku tuli.

VAU. And all her beauty has been taken away from the daughter of Sion: her princes were as rams finding no pasture, and are gone [away] in weakness before the face of the pursuer.

7 Naʻe manatu ʻe Selūsalema ʻi he ngaahi ʻaho ʻo ʻene mahaki mo ʻene ngaahi mamahi, ʻa ʻene meʻa mālie kotoa pē ʻaia naʻa ne maʻu ʻi he ngaahi ʻaho ʻi muʻa, ʻaia naʻe tō ʻa ʻene kakai ki he nima ʻoe fili, pea naʻe ʻikai ha tokoni kiate ia: naʻe mamata ʻae kau fili kiate ia pea nau taukae ki hono ngaahi ʻaho tapu.

ZAIN. Jerusalem remembered the days of her affliction, and her rejection; [she thought on] all her desirable things which were from the days of old, when her people fell into the hands of the oppressor, and there was none to help her: when her enemies saw [it] they laughed at her habitation.

8 Kuo fai kovi lahi ʻe Selūsalema ko ia kuo fetukutuku ai ia: ko kinautolu kotoa pē naʻe fakaʻapaʻapa kiate ia ʻoku nau manuki ki ai, koeʻuhi kuo nau mamata ki heʻene telefua: ʻio, ʻoku ne mafulu pea foki ki mui.

HETH. Jerusalem has sinned a [great] sin; therefore has she come into tribulation, all that used to honour her have afflicted her, for they have seen her shame: yes, she herself groaned, and turned backward.

9 ‌ʻOku ʻi hono kapaʻi kofu ʻā ʻene ʻuli; ʻoku ʻikai ha manatu ʻiate ia ki hono ngataʻanga; ko ia naʻa ne tō hifo fakamanavahē: naʻe ʻikai ʻiate ia ha taha ke fakafiemālie. ʻE Sihova ke ke ʻafio ki heʻeku mamahi: he kuo fakahikihiki ʻe ia ia, ʻe he fili.

TETH. Her uncleanness is before her feet; she remembered not her last end; she has lowered her boasting [tone], there is none to comfort her. Behold, O Lord, my affliction: for the enemy has magnified himself.

10 Kuo mafao ʻae fili ʻa hono nima ki heʻene ngaahi meʻa lelei kotoa pē: he kuo ne mamata naʻe hū ʻae hiteni ki hono potu tapu, ʻaia naʻa ke fekau, ke ʻoua naʻa nau hoko atu ki hoʻo kakai.

JOD. The oppressor has stretched out his hand on all her desirable things: for she has seen the Gentiles entering into her sanctuary, [concerning] whom you did command that they should not enter into your congregation.

11 ‌ʻOku mafulu ʻa ʻene kakai kotoa pē, ʻoku nau kumi mā, kuo nau foaki ʻenau ngaahi meʻa lelei ko e meʻakai, ke tokoni ʻae laumālie: “ʻE Sihova ke ke ʻafio pea vakai; he kuo u hoko ʻo fakalielia.”

CHAPH. All her people groan, seeking bread: they have given their desirable things for meat, to restore their soul: behold, Lord, and look; for she is become dishonoured.

12 “Ko ha meʻa noa pe eni kiate kimoutolu, ʻakimoutolu kotoa pē ʻoku ʻalu ange? Vakai, pea mamata, pe ʻoku ai ha mamahi ʻo hangē ko ʻeku mamahi, ʻaia ʻoku fai kiate au, ʻaia kuo fakamamahi ʻaki au ʻe Sihova ʻi he ʻaho ʻo hono houhau lahi.

LAMED. All you that pass by the way, turn, and see if there is sorrow like to my sorrow, which has happened [to me]. The Lord who spoke by me has afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.

13 “Kuo ne fakahifo mei ʻolunga ʻae afi ki hoku ngaahi hui, pea ʻoku ne mālohi ki ai: kuo ne fola ha kupenga ki hoku vaʻe; kuo ne fakatafokiʻi au ki mui: kuo ne ngaohi au ko e liʻaki mo e vaivai ʻi he ʻaho kotoa pē.

MEM. He has sent fire from his lofty habitation, he has brought it into my bones: he has spread a net for my feet, he has turned me back: he has made me desolate [and] mourning all the day.

14 “Ko e noʻo ʻo ʻeku ngaahi angahala, kuo haʻi ʻaki hono nima: ʻoku nau fihi, pea ʻoku aʻu hake ki hoku kia: kuo ne pule ke hinga ʻa ʻeku mālohi, kuo tukuange au ʻe Sihova ki honau nima, pea ʻoku ʻikai te u mafai ke tuʻu hake.

NUN. He has watched over my sins, they are twined about my hands, they have come up on my neck: my strength has failed; for the Lord has laid pains on my hands, I shall not be able to stand.

15 “Kuo malaki hifo ʻe Sihova ʻa ʻeku kau tangata mālohi kotoa pē, ʻi hoku haoʻanga: kuo ne ui ha fakataha kiate au ke taʻomia ʻeku kau talavou: kuo molomoloki ʻe Sihova ʻae tāupoʻou, ko e ʻofefine ʻo Siuta, ʻo hangē ʻi ha tataʻoʻanga uaine.

SAMECH. The Lord has cut off all my strong men from the midst of me: he has summoned against me a time for crushing my choice men: the Lord has trodden a wine-press for the virgin daughter of Juda: for these things I weep.

16 “Koeʻuhi ko e ngaahi meʻa ni ʻoku ou tangi; ko hoku mata, ko hoku mata ʻoku tafe hifo ʻi he vai, koeʻuhi ʻoku mamaʻo meiate au ʻae fakafiemālie naʻe totonu ke tokoni hoku laumālie: ʻoku liʻaki pe ʻeku fānau, koeʻuhi naʻe mālohi mai ʻae fili.”

AIN. Mine eye has poured out water, because he that should comfort me, that should restore my soul, has been removed far from me: my sons have been destroyed, because the enemy has prevailed.

17 “ʻOku mafao atu ʻe Saione ʻa hono nima, pea ʻoku ʻikai ha niʻihi ke fakafiemālie kiate ia: kuo fekau ʻe Sihova kia Sēkope, ke takatakai ia ʻe hono ngaahi fili: ʻoku hangē ha fefine mahaki ʻa Selūsalema ʻiate kinautolu.

PHE. Sion has spread out her hand, [and] there is none to comfort her: the Lord has commanded [concerning] Jacob, his oppressors are round about him: Jerusalem has become amongst them as a removed woman.

18 “ʻOku māʻoniʻoni ʻa Sihova; he kuo u fai talangataʻa ki heʻene fekau; ʻoku ou kole kiate kimoutolu ʻae kakai kotoa pē fanongo, pea mou vakai ki heʻeku mamahi: kuo ʻalu ʻeku kau tāupoʻou mo ʻeku kau talavou ki he pōpula.

TSADE. The Lord is righteous; for I have provoked his mouth: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my grief: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.

19 “Ne u ui ki heʻeku kau mamana, ka naʻa nau kākaaʻi au: ko ʻeku kau taulaʻeiki mo ʻeku kau mātuʻa naʻa nau tukuange ʻa honau laumālie ʻi he kolo, ʻi heʻenau kei kumi meʻakai ke fakafiemālie honau laumālie.

KOPH. I called my lovers, but they deceived me: my priests and my elders failed in the city; for they sought meat that they might restore their souls, and found [it] not.

20 “ʻAfio mai ʻe Sihova, he ʻoku ou mamahi: ʻoku ngaue mamahi hoku fatu; kuo liliu hoku loto ʻiate au; he kuo u fai talangataʻa ʻaupito; ʻituʻa a ʻoku fakamasiva ʻe he heletā, pea ʻoku ʻi he loto fale ʻae mate.

RHECHS. Behold, O Lord; for I am afflicted: my belly is troubled, and my heart is turned within me; for I have been grievously rebellious: abroad the sword has bereaved me, even as death at home.

21 “Kuo nau fanongo ʻoku ou mafulu: ʻoku ʻikai ha taha ke fakafiemālie kiate au, kuo fanongo ʻa hoku ngaahi fili kotoa pē ki heʻeku mamahi; ʻoku nau fiefia koeʻuhi kuo ke fai ia: he te ke fakahokosia ʻae ʻaho kuo ke tuʻutuʻuni, pea te nau hoko pe ʻo hangē ko au.

CHSEN. Hear, I pray you, for I groan: there is none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard [of] mine afflictions, and rejoice because you have done [it]: you have brought on the day, you have called the time: they are become like to me.

22 “Tuku ke hoko ki ho ʻao ʻa ʻenau ngaahi angahala kotoa pē; pea ke fai kiate kinautolu, ʻo hangē ko ia kuo ke fai kiate au, koeʻuhi ko ʻeku ngaahi angahala kotoa pē: he ʻoku lahi ʻeku mafulu, pea ʻoku vaivai hoku loto.”

THAU. Let all their wickedness come before your face; and strip them, as they have made a gleaning for all my sins: for my groans are many, and my heart is grieved.
