Hepelū 3

1 Ko ia, ʻe kāinga māʻoniʻoni, ʻoku kau ʻi he ui mei he langi, tokanga lahi ki he ʻaposetolo mo e fungani taulaʻeiki ʻo ʻetau lotu, ko Kalaisi Sisu;

Therefore, my Christian friends, you who, all alike, have received the call from heaven, fix your attention on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our religion.

2 ‌ʻAia naʻe angatonu kiate ia ne ne fakanofo ia, ʻo hangē foki ko Mōsese ʻi hono fale kotoa pē.

See how faithful he was to the God who appointed him, as Moses was in the whole house of God.

3 He naʻe totonu ke ne maʻu ʻe ia ʻae ongoongolelei lahi ʻia Mōsese, ʻo hangē ʻoku maʻu ʻe ia ʻoku langa ʻae fale ʻae ongoongolelei lahi ʻi he fale.

He has been deemed worthy of far higher honor than Moses, just as the founder of the house is held in greater regard than the house itself.

4 He kuo langa kotoa pē ʻae fale ʻe ha taha; ka ko ia kuo ne langa ʻae ngaahi meʻa kotoa pē ko e ʻOtua.

For every house has its founder, and the founder of the universe is God.

5 Pea naʻe angatonu moʻoni ʻa Mōsese ʻi hono fale kotoa pē, ʻo hangē ko e tamaioʻeiki, ko e fakamoʻoni ʻoe ngaahi meʻa ko ia ʻe leaʻaki;

While the faithful service of Moses in the whole house of God was that of a servant, whose duty was to bear testimony to a message still to come,

6 Ka ko Kalaisi ko e ʻAlo ia ʻi hono fale ʻoʻona; pea ko hono fale ʻakitautolu, ʻo kapau te tau kuku maʻu ʻae tui mo e fiefia ʻoe ʻamanaki lelei ʻo aʻu ki he ikuʻanga.

the faithfulness of Christ was that of a son set over the house of God. And we are his house – if only we retain, unshaken to the end, the courage and confidence inspired by our hope.

7 Ko ia (ʻo hangē ko e lea ʻae Laumālie Māʻoniʻoni, “Ko e ʻaho ni, ʻo kapau te mou fanongo ki hono leʻo,

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says – ‘If today you hear God’s voice,

8 ‌ʻOua naʻa mou fakafefeka homou loto, ʻo hangē ko ia ʻi he fakahouhau ʻi he ʻaho ʻoe ʻahiʻahi ʻi he toafa:

harden not your hearts, as when Israel provoked me on the day when they tried my patience in the desert,

9 ‌ʻAia naʻe ʻahiʻahiʻi au ʻe hoʻomou ngaahi tamai, pea nau ʻahiʻahi kiate au, ʻonau mamata ki heʻeku ngaahi ngaue ʻi he taʻu ʻe fāngofulu.

Where your ancestors tried my forbearance, and saw my mighty deeds for forty years.

10 Ko ia ne u fehiʻa ai ki he toʻutangata ko ia, peau pehē, ‘ʻOku nau he maʻuaipē ʻi honau loto: pea ʻoku ʻikai te nau ʻilo hoku ngaahi hala.’

Therefore I was sorely vexed with that generation, and I said – “Their hearts are always straying; they have never learned my ways”;

11 Ko ia ne u fuakava ai ʻi heʻeku houhau, ‘E ʻikai te nau hū ki hoku mālōlōʻanga.)’”

While in my wrath I swore – “They will never enter upon my rest.”’

12 Tokanga, ʻe kāinga, telia naʻa ai hamou tokotaha ha loto kovi ʻo taʻetui, he mavahe mei he ʻOtua moʻui.

Be careful, friends, that there is never found in anyone of you a wicked and faithless heart, shown by that person separating themselves from the living God.

13 Ka ke feakonakiʻaki ʻakimoutolu ʻi he ʻaho kotoa pē, ʻoku lolotonga hono ui, “Ko e ʻaho ni;” telia naʻa mataila hamou tokotaha ʻi he fakakākaaʻi ʻe he angahala.

Rather encourage one another daily – while there is a today – to prevent anyone among you from being hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

14 He kuo maʻu ʻekitautolu ʻa Kalaisi, ʻo kapau te tau kuku maʻu ʻa ʻetau fuofua tui ʻo aʻu ki he ikuʻanga;

For we now all share in the Christ, if indeed we retain, unshaken to the end, the confidence that we had at the first.

15 Pea lolotonga ʻoku pehē, “Ko e ʻaho ni, ʻo kapau te mou fanongo ki hono leʻo, ʻoua naʻa fakafefeka homou loto, ʻo hangē ko ia ʻi he fakahouhau.”

To use the words of scripture – ‘If today you hear God’s voice, harden not your hearts, as when Israel provoked me.’

16 He ko hai naʻe fakahouhau ʻi he hili ʻenau fanongo? ʻIkai ko kinautolu kotoa pē naʻe haʻu mei ʻIsipite ia Mōsese?

Who were they who heard God speak and yet provoked him? Were not they all those who left Egypt under the leadership of Moses?

17 Ka ko hai ne houhau ai ia ʻi he taʻu ʻe fāngofulu? ʻIkai ko kinautolu naʻe angahala, pea tō honau ʻangaʻanga ʻi he toafa?

And with whom was it that God was sorely vexed for forty years? Was not it with those who had sinned, and who fell dead in the desert?

18 Pea naʻe fuakava ia kia hai “ʻe ʻikai te nau hū ki hono mālōlōʻanga,” ka kiate kinautolu pe naʻe taʻetui?

And who were they to whom God swore that they should not enter upon his rest, if not those who had proved faithless?

19 Ko ia ʻoku tau ʻilo, naʻe ʻikai faʻa hū atu ʻakinautolu ko e meʻa ʻi he taʻetui.

We see, then, that they failed to enter upon it because of their want of faith.
