San Lucas 23
1 LEVANTÁNDOSE entónces toda la multitud de ellos lleváronle á Pilato.
The whole council rose and took him to Pilate.
2 Y comenzaron á acusarle diciendo: A este hemos hallado que pervierte la nacion, y que veda dar tributo á Cesar, diciendo que él es el Cristo, el Rey.
There they started to accuse him. “We found this man deceiving our nation, telling people not to pay taxes to Caesar, and claiming he is Messiah, a king,” they said.
3 Entónces Pilato le preguntó, diciendo: ¿Eres tú el Rey de los Judíos? Y respondiendo él, dijo: Tu [lo] dices.
“Are you the King of the Jews?” Pilate asked him. “So you say,” replied Jesus.
4 Y Pilato dijo á los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y á las gentes: Ninguna culpa hallo en este hombre.
Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I don't find this man guilty of any crime.”
5 Mas ellos porfiaban, diciendo: Alborota al pueblo, enseñando por toda Judéa, comenzando desde Galiléa hasta aquí.
But they insisted, saying, “He is inciting rebellion all over Judea with his teachings, from Galilee to right here in Jerusalem.”
6 Entónces Pilato, oyendo [hablar] de Galiléa, pregunto si el hombre era Galiléo.
When he heard this, Pilate asked, “Is this man a Galilean?”
7 Y como entendió que era de la jurisdiccion de Heródes, le remitió á Heródes, el cual tambien estaba en Jerusalem en aquellos dias.
When he discovered that Jesus came under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who was also in Jerusalem at the time.
8 Y Heródes, viendo á Jesus, holgóse mucho, porque hacia mucho [tiempo] que deseaba verle; porque habia oido de él muchas cosas, y tenia esperanza que le veria hacer alguna señal.
Herod was very pleased to see Jesus since he had wanted to meet him for a long time. He had heard about Jesus and was hoping to see him perform a miracle.
9 Y le preguntaba con muchas palabras; mas él nada le respondió.
He asked Jesus many questions, but Jesus did not answer him at all.
10 Y estaban los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los escribas acusándole con gran porfía.
The chief priests and religious teachers stood there, angrily accusing him.
11 Mas Heródes con su corte le menospreció, y escarneció, vistiéndole de una ropa rica; y volviólo á enviar á Pilato.
Herod and his soldiers treated Jesus with contempt and mocked him. Then they placed a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.
12 Y fueron hechos amigos entre sí Pilato y Heródes en el mismo dia; porque ántes eran enemigos entre sí.
From that day on Herod and Pilate were friends—before that they had been enemies.
13 Entónces Pilato, convocando los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los magistrados, y el pueblo,
Pilate called together the chief priests, rulers, and the people,
14 Les dijo: Me habeis presentado á este por hombre que desvía al pueblo; y hé aquí, preguntando yo delante de vosotros, no he hallado alguna culpa en este hombre de aquellas de que le acusais.
and told them, “You brought this man before me, accusing him of inciting the people to rebellion. I've carefully examined him in your presence, and do not find him guilty of the charges you have brought against him.
15 Y ni aun Heródes; porque os remití á él, y hé aquí que ninguna cosa digna de muerte ha hecho.
Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. He has done nothing that demands he should be put to death.
16 Le soltaré pues castigado.
So I will have him flogged and then release him.”
17 Y tenia necesidad de soltarles uno en cada fiesta.
18 Mas toda la multitud dió voces á una diciendo: Quita á este [la vida, ] y suéltanos á Barrabás:
But they all shouted together, “Kill this man, and release Barabbas to us.”
19 El cual habia sido echado en la cárcel por una sedicion hecha en la ciudad, y una muerte.
(Barabbas had been put in prison for taking part in a rebellion in the city, and for murder.)
20 Y hablóles otra vez Pilato, queriendo soltar á Jesus.
Pilate wanted to release Jesus, so spoke to them again.
21 Pero ellos volvieron á dar voces diciendo: Crucifícale, crucifícale.
But they kept on shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 Y él les dijo la tercera vez: ¿Pues qué mal ha hecho este? ninguna culpa de muerte he hallado en él: le castigaré, pues, y soltaré[lo.]
Pilate asked them for the third time, “But why? What crime has he committed? I don't find any reason for executing him. So I will have him flogged and then release him.”
23 Mas ellos instaban á grandes voces pidiendo que fuese crucificado; y las voces de ellos y de los príncipes de los sacerdotes crecian.
But they continued insisting with loud shouts, demanding that he be crucified. Their shouting succeeded,
24 Entónces Pilato juzgó que se hiciese lo que ellos pedian.
and Pilate gave the sentence they demanded.
25 Y les soltó á aquel que habia sido echado en la cárcel por sedicion y una muerte, al cual habian pedido; y entregó á Jesus á la voluntad de ellos.
He released the man imprisoned for rebellion and murder, but he sent Jesus to be put to death in accordance with their demands.
26 Y llevándole, tomaron á un Simon Cirenéo, que venia del campo, y le pusieron encima la cruz para que la llevase tras Jesus.
As the soldiers led him away, they seized a man called Simon of Cyrene, who had come in from the countryside. They put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.
27 Y le seguia una grande multitud de pueblo, y de mujeres, las cuales le lloraban, y lamentaban.
A large crowd followed him, along with women who were mourning and lamenting him.
28 Mas Jesus, vuelto á ellas, les dice: Hijas de Jerusalem, no me lloreis á mí, mas llorad por vosotras mismas, y por vuestros hijos.
Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, don't weep for me. Weep for yourselves and your children.
29 Porque hé aquí vendrán dias en que dirán; Bienaventuradas las estériles, y los vientres que no engendraron, y los pechos que no criaron.
For the time is coming when they'll say, ‘Happy are those who are childless, and those who never had babies, and those who never nursed them.’
30 Entónces comenzarán á decir á los montes: Caed sobre nosotros; y á los collados: Cubridnos.
They'll say to the mountains, ‘Fall down on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’
31 Porque si en el árbol verde hacen estas cosas, ¿en el seco, qué se hará?
For if they do this to wood that is green, what will happen when it's dried out?”
32 Y llevaban tambien con él otros dos, malhechores, á ser muertos.
They also took two others who were criminals to be executed with him.
33 Y como vinieron al lugar que se llama de la Calavera, le crucificaron allí, y á los malhechores, uno á la derecha, y otro á la izquierda.
When they reached the place called the Skull they crucified him together with the criminals, one on his right, and the other on his left.
34 Y Jesus decia: Padre, perdónalos; porque no saben lo que hacen. Y partiendo sus vestidos, echaron suertes.
Jesus said, “Father, please forgive them, for they don't know what they're doing.” They divided up his clothes by throwing dice for them.
35 Y el pueblo estaba mirando; y se burlaban [de el] los príncipes con ellos, diciendo: A otros hizo salvos; sálvese á sí, si este es el Mesías, el escogido de Dios.
The people stood and watched and the leaders sneered at Jesus. “He saved others, let him save himself, if he is really God's Messiah, the Chosen One,” they said.
36 Escarnecian de él tambien los soldados, llegándose y presentándole vinagre,
The soldiers also mocked him, coming up to him and offering him wine vinegar, saying,
37 Y diciendo: Si tú eres el Rey de los Judíos, sálvate á tí mismo.
“If you're the King of the Jews, then save yourself.”
38 Y habia tambien sobre él un título escrito con letras griegas, y latinas, y hebráicas: ESTE ES EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS.
Above Jesus was a sign on which it was written, “This is the King of the Jews.”
39 Y uno de los malhechores que estaban colgados, le injuriaba, diciendo: Si tú eres el Cristo, sálvate á tí mismo y á nosotros.
One of the criminals hanging there joined in the insults against Jesus. “Aren't you the Messiah?” he asked. “Then save yourself—and us too!”
40 Y respondiendo el otro, reprendióle diciendo: ¿Ni aun tú temes á Dios, estando en la misma condenacion,
But the other criminal disagreed and argued with him, “Don't you fear God even when you're suffering the same punishment?” he asked.
41 Y nosotros, á la verdad, justamente [padecemos; ] porque recibimos lo que merecieron nuestros hechos; mas este ningun mal hizo.
“For us the sentence is right since we're being punished for what we did, but this man didn't do anything wrong.”
42 Y dijo á Jesus: Acuerdate de mí cuando vinieres á tu reino.
Then he said, “Jesus, please remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
43 Entónces Jesus le dijo: De cierto te digo que hoy estarás conmigo en el paraiso.
Jesus replied, “I promise you today you will be with me in paradise.”
44 Y cuando era como la hora de sexta fueron hechas tinieblas sobre toda la tierra hasta la hora de nona.
By this time it was around noon and darkness fell over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
45 Y el sol se oscureció, y el velo del templo se rompió por medio.
The sun's light was shut out, and the Temple veil was torn in two.
46 Entónces Jesus, clamando á gran voz, dijo: Padre, en tus manos encomiendo mi espíritu. Y habiendo dicho esto, espiró.
Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, I place myself in your hands.” Having said this he breathed his last.
47 Y como el centurion vió lo que habia acontecido, dió gloria á Dios diciendo: Verdaderamente este hombre era justo.
When the centurion saw what had happened he praised God and said, “Surely this man was innocent.”
48 Y toda la multitud de los que estaban presentes á este espectáculo, viendo lo que habia acontecido, se volvian hiriendo sus pechos.
When all the crowds that had come to watch saw what happened they went home beating their chests in grief.
49 Mas todos sus conocidos, y las mujeres que le habian seguido desde Galiléa estaban de léjos mirando estas cosas.
But all those who knew Jesus, including the women who'd followed him from Galilee, watched from a distance.
50 Y hé aquí un varon llamado José, el cual era senador, varon bueno y justo,
There was a man called Joseph who was good and honest. He was a member of the council,
51 El cual no habia consentido en el consejo ni en los hechos de ellos, de Arimatéa, ciudad de la Judéa, el cual tambien esperaba el reino de Dios;
but he hadn't agreed with its decisions and actions. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea, and was waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God.
52 Este llegó á Pilato, y pidió el cuerpo de Jesus.
Joseph went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.
53 Y quitado, le envolvió en una sábana: y le puso en un sepulcro abierto en una peña, en la cual ninguno habia aun sido puesto.
Once he'd taken it down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth. He laid Jesus in an unused tomb cut into the rock.
54 Y era dia de la víspera [de la Pascua; ] y estaba para rayar el Sábado.
It was preparation day and the Sabbath would soon begin.
55 Y las mujeres que con él habian venido de Galiléa, siguieron tambien, y vieron el sepulcro, y como fué puesto su cuerpo.
The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee had followed Joseph and had seen the tomb where Jesus' body had been laid.
56 Y vueltas aparejaron [drogas] aromáticas, y ungüentos; y reposaron el Sábado, conforme al mandamiento.
They returned home and prepared spices and ointments. But on the Sabbath they rested, observing the commandment.
