Jueces 11
1 Jefté, el Galaadita, era un hombre de gran valor. Era hijo de una prostituta. Galaad fue el padre de Jefté.
Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a prostitute. And Gilead became the father of Jephthah.
2 La mujer de Galaad le dio hijos. Cuando los hijos de su mujer crecieron, expulsaron a Jefté y le dijeron: “No heredarás en la casa de nuestro padre, porque eres hijo de otra mujer”.
Gilead's wife bore him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said to him, "You shall not inherit in our father's house; for you are the son of another woman."
3 Entonces Jefté huyó de sus hermanos y vivió en la tierra de Tob. Los forajidos se unieron a Jefté y salieron con él.
Then Jephthah fled from his brothers, and lived in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.
4 Después de un tiempo, los hijos de Amón hicieron la guerra contra Israel.
It happened after a while, that the people of Ammon made war against Israel.
5 Cuando los hijos de Amón hicieron la guerra contra Israel, los ancianos de Galaad fueron a sacar a Jefté de la tierra de Tob.
It was so, that when the people of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah out of the land of Tob;
6 Le dijeron a Jefté: “Ven y sé nuestro jefe, para que luchemos contra los hijos de Amón”.
and they said to Jephthah, "Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the people of Ammon."
7 Jefté dijo a los ancianos de Galaad: “¿No me odiasteis y me expulsasteis de la casa de mi padre? ¿Por qué habéis venido a mí ahora que estáis en apuros?”
And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "Did you not hate me, and drive me out of my father's house, and sent me away from you? And why have you come to me now when you are in distress?"
8 Los ancianos de Galaad dijeron a Jefté: “Por eso nos hemos vuelto a ti ahora, para que vayas con nosotros y luches contra los hijos de Amón. Tú serás nuestro jefe sobre todos los habitantes de Galaad”.
The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "Not so. We have turned to you now, that you may go with us, and fight with the people of Ammon; and you shall be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead."
9 Jefté dijo a los ancianos de Galaad: “Si me lleváis de nuevo a casa para luchar contra los hijos de Amón, y Yahvé los libra antes que yo, ¿seré yo vuestro jefe?”
Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "If you bring me home again to fight with the people of Ammon, and the LORD delivers them before me, shall I be your head?"
10 Los ancianos de Galaad dijeron a Jefté: “Yahvé será testigo entre nosotros. Ciertamente haremos lo que dices”.
The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "The LORD shall be witness between us; surely according to your word so will we do."
11 Entonces Jefté se fue con los ancianos de Galaad, y el pueblo lo nombró jefe y rector de ellos. Jefté pronunció todas sus palabras ante el Señor en Mizpa.
Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them. And Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD in Mizpah.
12 Jefté envió mensajeros al rey de los hijos de Amón, diciendo: “¿Qué tienes que ver conmigo, que has venido a luchar contra mi tierra?”
Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the people of Ammon, saying, "What have you to do with me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?"
13 El rey de los hijos de Amón respondió a los mensajeros de Jefté: “Porque Israel me quitó mi tierra cuando subió de Egipto, desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc y el Jordán. Ahora, pues, devuelve ese territorio en paz”.
And the king of the people of Ammon answered the messengers of Jephthah, "Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan. Now therefore restore it peaceably, and I will depart."
14 Jefté volvió a enviar mensajeros al rey de los hijos de Amón;
And the messengers returned to Jephthah, and Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the people of Ammon;
15 y le dijo: “Jefté dice: Israel no se apoderó de la tierra de Moab, ni de la tierra de los hijos de Amón;
and he said to him, "Thus says Jephthah: 'Israel did not take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the people of Ammon,
16 pero cuando subieron de Egipto, e Israel atravesó el desierto hasta el Mar Rojo, y llegó a Cades,
but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;
17 entonces Israel envió mensajeros al rey de Edom, diciendo: “Por favor, déjame pasar por tu tierra”; pero el rey de Edom no le hizo caso. Del mismo modo, envió al rey de Moab, pero éste se negó; así que Israel se quedó en Cades.
then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, 'Please let me pass through your land.' But the king of Edom did not listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab; but he would not. So Israel stayed in Kadesh.
18 Luego atravesaron el desierto y rodearon la tierra de Edom y la tierra de Moab, y llegaron por el lado oriental de la tierra de Moab, y acamparon al otro lado del Arnón; pero no llegaron a la frontera de Moab, porque el Arnón era la frontera de Moab.
Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they camped on the other side of the Arnon; but they did not come within the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was the boundary of Moab.
19 Israel envió mensajeros a Sehón, rey de los amorreos, el rey de Hesbón, y le dijo: “Por favor, déjanos pasar por tu tierra hasta mi lugar.
Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, "Please let me pass through your land to our land.'
20 Pero Sehón no confió en que Israel pasara por su frontera, sino que reunió a todo su pueblo, acampó en Jahaz y luchó contra Israel.
But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and camped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
21 Yahvé, el Dios de Israel, entregó a Sehón y a todo su pueblo en manos de Israel, y ellos los hirieron. Así, Israel poseyó toda la tierra de los amorreos, los habitantes de ese país.
The LORD, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them. So Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
22 Poseyeron toda la frontera de los amorreos, desde Arnón hasta Jaboc, y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.
They possessed all the territory of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan.
23 Así que ahora Yahvé, el Dios de Israel, ha desposeído a los amorreos de la presencia de su pueblo Israel, ¿y tú debes poseerlos?
So now the LORD, the God of Israel, has driven out the Amorites from before his people Israel, and should you possess them?
24 ¿No vas a poseer lo que Quemos, tu dios, te da para que lo poseas? Así que a quien el Señor, nuestro Dios, haya despojado de su presencia ante nosotros, a él lo poseeremos.
Won't you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever the LORD our God has driven out from before us, we will possess.
25 ¿Acaso eres mejor que Balac, hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab? ¿Acaso luchó él alguna vez contra Israel, o peleó contra ellos?
And now are you anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever contend against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?
26 ¡Israel vivió en Hesbón y sus pueblos, en Aroer y sus pueblos, y en todas las ciudades que están a la orilla del Arnón durante trescientos años! ¿Por qué no los recuperaste en ese tiempo?
While Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; why did you not liberate them within that time?
27 Por lo tanto, yo no he pecado contra ti, sino que tú me haces mal al guerrear contra mí. Que el Juez Yahvé sea hoy juez entre los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Amón”.
I therefore have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong by making war against me. The LORD, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the people of Ammon."
28 Sin embargo, el rey de los hijos de Amón no escuchó las palabras de Jefté que le envió.
However the king of the people of Ammon did not listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
29 Entonces el Espíritu de Yahvé vino sobre Jefté, y pasó por Galaad y Manasés, y pasó por Mizpa de Galaad, y de Mizpa de Galaad pasó a los hijos de Ammón.
Then the Ruach of the LORD came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over to the people of Ammon.
30 Jefté hizo un voto a Yahvé y dijo: “Si en verdad entregas a los hijos de Amón en mi mano,
Jephthah made a vow to the LORD, and said, "If you will indeed deliver the people of Ammon into my hand,
31 entonces será que todo lo que salga de las puertas de mi casa a recibirme cuando regrese en paz de los hijos de Amón, será de Yahvé, y lo ofreceré en holocausto.”
then it shall be that whatever comes forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the people of Ammon, it shall be the LORD's, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering."
32 Entonces Jefté pasó a los hijos de Amón para combatirlos, y Yahvé los entregó en su mano.
So Jephthah passed over to the people of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hand.
33 Los hirió desde Aroer hasta llegar a Minnith, veinte ciudades, y hasta Abelcheramim, con una matanza muy grande. Así los hijos de Amón fueron sometidos ante los hijos de Israel.
He struck them from Aroer until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to Abel Keramim, with a very great slaughter. So the people of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
34 Jefté llegó a Mizpa a su casa, y he aquí que su hija salió a recibirlo con panderetas y danzas. Era su única hija. Además de ella no tenía ni hijo ni hija.
Jephthah came to Mizpah to his house; and look, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.
35 Cuando la vio, se rasgó las vestiduras y dijo: “¡Ay, hija mía! Me has hecho caer muy bajo, y eres de las que me molestan; porque he abierto mi boca a Yahvé, y no puedo volver atrás.”
And it happened, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, "Alas, my daughter. You have brought me very low. You have become a stumbling block in my sight. And you are among those who trouble me. For I have given my word to the LORD, and I can't break it."
36 Ella le dijo: “Padre mío, has abierto tu boca a Yahvé; haz conmigo lo que ha salido de tu boca, porque Yahvé se ha vengado de tus enemigos, de los hijos de Amón.”
She said to him, "My father, since you have given your word to the LORD; do to me as you promised, because the LORD has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, even on the people of Ammon."
37 Entonces ella dijo a su padre: “Que se haga esto por mí. Déjame dos meses, para que me vaya y baje a los montes, y llore mi virginidad, yo y mis compañeras.”
She said to her father, "Let this thing be done for me: leave me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the mountains, and weep because of my virginity, I and my companions."
38 Le dijo: “Vete”. La envió por dos meses; y ella partió, ella y sus compañeras, y lloró su virginidad en las montañas.
He said, "Go." He sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and wept because of her virginity on the mountains.
39 Al cabo de dos meses, volvió a su padre, quien hizo con ella lo que había prometido. Era virgen. Se convirtió en costumbre en Israel
It happened at the end of two months, that she returned to her father, who did with her according to what he had vowed. And she was a virgin. It became a custom in Israel,
40 que las hijas de Israel fueran anualmente a festejar a la hija de Jefté Galaadita cuatro días al año.
that the daughters of Israel went yearly four days in a year to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.
