Esdras 4

1 Cuando los adversarios de Judá y Benjamín se enteraron de que los hijos del cautiverio estaban construyendo un templo a Yahvé, el Dios de Israel,

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;

2 se acercaron a Zorobabel y a los jefes de familia de los padres y les dijeron: “Permítannos construir con ustedes, pues buscamos a su Dios como ustedes, y le ofrecemos sacrificios desde los días de Esar Haddón, rey de Asiria, que nos hizo subir aquí.”

Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye [do; ] and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.

3 Pero Zorobabel, Jesúa y el resto de los jefes de familia de Israel les dijeron: “Vosotros no tenéis nada que ver con nosotros en la construcción de una casa a nuestro Dios, sino que nosotros mismos construiremos juntos a Yahvé, el Dios de Israel, como nos ha ordenado el rey Ciro, rey de Persia.”

But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.

4 Entonces la gente del país debilitó las manos del pueblo de Judá y lo perturbó en la construcción.

Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

5 Contrataron consejeros contra ellos para frustrar su propósito todos los días de Ciro, rey de Persia, hasta el reinado de Darío, rey de Persia.

And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6 En el reinado de Asuero, al principio de su reinado, escribieron una acusación contra los habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén.

And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they [unto him] an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 En los días de Artajerjes, Bislam, Mitrídates, Tabeel y el resto de sus compañeros escribieron a Artajerjes, rey de Persia, y la redacción de la carta fue escrita en sirio y entregada en lengua siria.

And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter [was] written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.

8 Rehum, el canciller, y Simsai, el escriba, escribieron una carta contra Jerusalén al rey Artajerjes, de la siguiente manera

Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:

9 Entonces Rehum, el canciller, Simsai, el escriba, y el resto de sus compañeros, los dinaítas, los afarsatitas, los tarpelitas, los afarsitas, los archevitas, los babilonios, los susanquitas, los dehaitas, los elamitas,

Then [wrote] Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, [and] the Elamites,

10 y el resto de las naciones que el grande y noble Osnappar trajo y estableció en la ciudad de Samaria, y en el resto del país más allá del río, etc., escribieron.

And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest [that are] on this side the river, and at such a time.

11 Esta es la copia de la carta que enviaron: Al rey Artajerjes, de parte de tus siervos, el pueblo de allende el río.

This [is] the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, [even] unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.

12 Hazle saber al rey que los judíos que subieron de ti han venido a nosotros a Jerusalén. Están construyendo la ciudad rebelde y mala, y han terminado las murallas y reparado los cimientos.

Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls [thereof], and joined the foundations.

13 Sepa ahora el rey que si se construye esta ciudad y se terminan las murallas, no pagarán tributo, ni costumbre, ni peaje, y al final será perjudicial para los reyes.

Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up [again, then] will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and [so] thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.

14 Ahora bien, como nosotros comemos la sal del palacio y no es conveniente que veamos la deshonra del rey, hemos enviado a informar al rey,

Now because we have maintenance from [the king’s] palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;

15 para que se busque en el libro de los registros de tus padres. Verás en el libro de los registros, y sabrás que esta ciudad es una ciudad rebelde y perjudicial para los reyes y las provincias, y que en el pasado han iniciado rebeliones en su interior. Por eso esta ciudad fue destruida.

That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city [is] a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.

16 Informamos al rey que si se construye esta ciudad y se terminan las murallas, no tendrás ninguna posesión más allá del río.

We certify the king that, if this city be builded [again], and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.

17 Entonces el rey envió una respuesta a Rehum, el canciller, y a Simsai, el escriba, y al resto de sus compañeros que viven en Samaria y en el resto del país al otro lado del río: La paz.

[Then] sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and [to] Shimshai the scribe, and [to] the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and [unto] the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.

18 La carta que nos enviasteis ha sido leída claramente ante mí.

The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.

19 He decretado, y se ha hecho una búsqueda, y se ha encontrado que esta ciudad ha hecho insurrección contra los reyes en el pasado, y que se han hecho en ella rebeliones y revueltas.

And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and [that] rebellion and sedition have been made therein.

20 También ha habido reyes poderosos sobre Jerusalén que han gobernado todo el país más allá del río, y se les pagaba tributo, costumbre y peaje.

There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all [countries] beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.

21 Haz ahora un decreto para que cesen estos hombres, y que no se construya esta ciudad hasta que yo lo decrete.

Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until [another] commandment shall be given from me.

22 Tengan cuidado de no ser negligentes al hacerlo. ¿Por qué ha de crecer el daño en perjuicio de los reyes?

Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

23 Entonces, cuando la copia de la carta del rey Artajerjes fue leída ante Rehum, el escriba Simsai y sus compañeros, se dirigieron apresuradamente a Jerusalén a los judíos y los hicieron cesar por la fuerza de las armas.

Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter [was] read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

24 Entonces se detuvo el trabajo en la casa de Dios que está en Jerusalén. Se detuvo hasta el segundo año del reinado de Darío, rey de Persia.

Then ceased the work of the house of God which [is] at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
