2 Samuel 18
1 David contó el pueblo que estaba con él, y puso al frente de él a capitanes de millares y a capitanes de centenas.
And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.
2 David envió al pueblo, una tercera parte bajo la mano de Joab, y una tercera parte bajo la mano de Abisai hijo de Sarvia, hermano de Joab, y una tercera parte bajo la mano de Ittai el geteo. El rey dijo al pueblo: “Seguramente yo también saldré con ustedes”.
And David sent forth the people, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.
3 Pero el pueblo dijo: “No salgas, porque si huimos, no se ocuparán de nosotros, ni si la mitad de nosotros muere, se ocuparán de nosotros. Pero tú vales por diez mil de nosotros. Por eso, ahora es mejor que estés dispuesto a ayudarnos a salir de la ciudad”.
But the people said, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou be ready to succour us out of the city.
4 El rey les dijo: “Haré lo que os parezca mejor”. El rey se paró junto a la puerta, y todo el pueblo salió por cientos y por miles.
And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.
5 El rey ordenó a Joab, a Abisai y a Ittai, diciendo: “Traten con delicadeza por mi causa al joven Absalón”. Todo el pueblo escuchó cuando el rey ordenó a todos los capitanes acerca de Absalón.
And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.
6 El pueblo salió al campo contra Israel, y la batalla fue en el bosque de Efraín.
So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim.
7 El pueblo de Israel fue golpeado allí ante los siervos de David, y hubo allí una gran matanza aquel día de veinte mil hombres.
And the people of Israel were smitten there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men.
8 Porque la batalla se extendió allí sobre la superficie de todo el país, y el bosque devoró aquel día más gente que la espada.
For the battle was there spread over the face of all the country: and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.
9 Absalón se encontró con los siervos de David. Absalón iba montado en su mula, y la mula pasó por debajo de las gruesas ramas de una gran encina; su cabeza se enganchó en la encina, y quedó colgando entre el cielo y la tierra; y la mula que estaba debajo de él siguió adelante.
And Absalom chanced to meet the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went on.
10 Un hombre lo vio y se lo comunicó a Joab, diciendo: “He aquí que he visto a Absalón colgado en una encina”.
And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.
11 Joab dijo al hombre que se lo había contado: “Mira que lo has visto, ¿y por qué no lo has derribado allí mismo? Te habría dado diez piezas de plata y una faja”.
And Joab said unto the man that told him, And behold, thou sawest it, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten [pieces of] silver, and a girdle.
12 El hombre le dijo a Joab: “Aunque recibiera en mi mano mil monedas de plata, no extendería mi mano contra el hijo del rey, porque a nuestro entender el rey os ordenó a ti, a Abisai y a Ittai, diciendo: ‘Cuidad de que nadie toque al joven Absalón’.
And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand [pieces of] silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king’s son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.
13 De lo contrario, si yo hubiera atentado contra su vida (y no hay asunto que se le oculte al rey), tú mismo te habrías puesto en mi contra.”
Otherwise if I had dealt falsely against his life, (and there is no matter hid from the king, ) then thou thyself wouldest have stood aloof.
14 Entonces Joab dijo: “No voy a esperar así contigo”. Tomó tres dardos en la mano y los clavó en el corazón de Absalón, cuando aún estaba vivo en medio de la encina.
Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.
15 Diez jóvenes que llevaban la armadura de Joab rodearon y golpearon a Absalón y lo mataron.
And ten young men that bare Joab’s armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.
16 Joab tocó la trompeta, y el pueblo volvió de perseguir a Israel, pues Joab retuvo al pueblo.
And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people.
17 Tomaron a Absalón y lo arrojaron a un gran pozo en el bosque, y levantaron sobre él un montón de piedras muy grande. Entonces todo Israel huyó, cada uno a su tienda.
And they took Absalom, and cast him into the great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.
18 Absalón, en vida, había tomado y levantado para sí la columna que está en el valle del rey, pues dijo: “No tengo hijo que guarde mi nombre en la memoria”. Llamó a la columna con su propio nombre. Hasta hoy se llama el monumento de Absalón.
Now Absalom in his life time had taken and reared up for himself the pillar, which is in the king’s dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called Absalom’s monument, unto this day.
19 Entonces Ahimaas, hijo de Sadoc, dijo: “Permítanme correr y llevarle al rey noticias de cómo Yahvé lo ha vengado de sus enemigos.”
Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the LORD hath avenged him of his enemies.
20 Joab le dijo: “Hoy no debes ser portador de noticias, sino que deberás llevarlas otro día. Pero hoy no debes llevar noticias, porque el hijo del rey ha muerto”.
And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not be the bearer of tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king’s son is dead.
21 Entonces Joab le dijo al cusita: “¡Ve y dile al rey lo que has visto!” El cusita se inclinó ante Joab y corrió.
Then said Joab to the Cushite, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And the Cushite bowed himself unto Joab, and ran.
22 Entonces Ahimaas, hijo de Sadoc, volvió a decir a Joab: “Pero pase lo que pase, por favor, déjame también correr tras el cusita.” Joab dijo: “¿Por qué quieres huir, hijo mío, ya que no tendrás recompensa por la noticia?”
Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But come what may, let me, I pray thee, also run after the Cushite. And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou wilt have no reward for the tidings?
23 “Pero pase lo que pase”, dijo, “correré”. Le dijo: “¡Corre!” Entonces Ahimaas corrió por el camino de la Llanura, y superó al cusita.
But come what may, [said he], I will run. And he said unto him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Plain, and overran the Cushite.
24 David estaba sentado entre las dos puertas, y el centinela subió al techo de la puerta que da a la muralla, y alzó los ojos y miró, y he aquí un hombre que corría solo.
Now David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, a man running alone.
25 El vigilante dio un grito y se lo comunicó al rey. El rey dijo: “Si está solo, hay noticias en su boca”. Se acercó más y más.
And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.
26 El vigilante vio a otro hombre que corría; y el vigilante llamó al portero y le dijo: “¡Mira, un hombre que corre solo!” El rey dijo: “Él también trae noticias”.
And the watchman saw another man running: and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold, [another] man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.
27 El vigilante dijo: “Creo que la carrera del primero es como la de Ajimaas, hijo de Sadoc”. El rey dijo: “Es un buen hombre y viene con buenas noticias”.
And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.
28 Ahimaas llamó y dijo al rey: “Todo está bien”. Se inclinó ante el rey con el rostro hacia la tierra, y dijo: “¡Bendito sea Yahvé, tu Dios, que ha entregado a los hombres que levantaron su mano contra mi señor el rey!”
And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he bowed himself before the king with his face to the earth, and said, Blessed be the LORD thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.
29 El rey dijo: “¿Está bien el joven Absalón?” Ahimaas respondió: “Cuando Joab envió al siervo del rey, yo también tu siervo, vi un gran alboroto, pero no sé qué era”.
And the king said, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king’s servant, even me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.
30 El rey le dijo: “Ven y párate aquí”. Vino y se quedó quieto.
And the king said, Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still.
31 He aquí que vino el cusita. El cusita dijo: “Buenas noticias para mi señor el rey, porque Yahvé te ha vengado hoy de todos los que se levantaron contra ti.”
And, behold, the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, Tidings for my lord the king: for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.
32 El rey dijo al cusita: “¿Está bien el joven Absalón?” El cusita respondió: “Que los enemigos de mi señor el rey, y todos los que se levanten contra ti para hacerte daño, sean como ese joven”.
And the king said unto the Cushite, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And the Cushite answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise up against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.
33 El rey, muy conmovido, subió a la sala de la puerta y lloró. Mientras iba, dijo: “¡Hijo mío Absalón! ¡Hijo mío, hijo mío Absalón! Ojalá hubiera muerto yo en tu lugar, Absalón, hijo mío, hijo mío”.
And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!
