1 Reyes 12

1 Roboam fue a Siquem, porque todo Israel había acudido a Siquem para hacerle rey.

Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.

2 Cuando Jeroboam hijo de Nabat se enteró de ello (pues aún estaba en Egipto, donde había huido de la presencia del rey Salomón, y Jeroboam vivía en Egipto;

And it happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam lived in Egypt), he came straight to his own city in the land of Zererah in the hill country of Ephraim.

3 y enviaron a llamarlo), Jeroboam y toda la asamblea de Israel vinieron y hablaron con Roboam, diciendo:

And they sent and called for him. And Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came, and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,

4 “Tu padre hizo difícil nuestro yugo. Ahora, pues, aligera el duro servicio de tu padre y el pesado yugo que nos impuso, y te serviremos.”

"Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you."

5 Les dijo: “Vayan por tres días y luego vuelvan a mí”. Así que la gente se marchó.

He said to them, "Depart for three days, then come back to me." The people departed.

6 El rey Roboam se asesoró con los ancianos que habían estado delante de Salomón, su padre, cuando aún vivía, diciendo: “¿Qué consejo me dais para responder a esta gente?”

King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, "What counsel do you give me to return answer to this people?"

7 Ellos respondieron: “Si hoy eres un siervo para este pueblo y le sirves y le respondes con buenas palabras, entonces ellos serán tus siervos para siempre.”

They spoke to him, saying, "If you will be a servant to this people this day, and will serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever."

8 Pero abandonó el consejo de los ancianos que le habían dado, y tomó consejo con los jóvenes que habían crecido con él, que estaban delante de él.

But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.

9 Les dijo: “¿Qué consejo les dais para que respondamos a esta gente que me ha hablado diciendo: “Aligerad el yugo que vuestro padre nos puso”?”

He said to them, "What counsel do you give, that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, 'Make the yoke that your father put on us lighter?'"

10 Los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le dijeron: “Dile a esa gente que te ha hablado diciendo: “Tu padre ha hecho pesado nuestro yugo, pero aligéralo para nosotros”; diles: “Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que la cintura de mi padre.

The young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, "Thus you shall tell this people who spoke to you, saying, 'Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter to us;' you shall say to them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's waist.

11 Mi padre os cargó con un yugo pesado, pero yo añadiré a vuestro yugo. Mi padre os castigó con látigos, pero yo os castigaré con escorpiones’”.

Now whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.'"

12 Entonces Jeroboam y todo el pueblo vinieron a Roboam al tercer día, tal como el rey lo había pedido, diciendo: “Volved a mí al tercer día”.

So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king asked, saying, "Come to me again the third day."

13 El rey respondió al pueblo con aspereza, y abandonó el consejo de los ancianos que le habían dado,

The king answered the people roughly, and forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him,

14 y les habló según el consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: “Mi padre hizo pesado vuestro yugo, pero yo añadiré a vuestro yugo. Mi padre os castigó con látigos, pero yo os castigaré con escorpiones”.

and spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, "My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions."

15 El rey, pues, no escuchó al pueblo, porque era una cosa traída de Yahvé, para confirmar su palabra, que Yahvé habló por medio de Ahías el silonita a Jeroboam hijo de Nabat.

So the king did not listen to the people; for it was a thing brought about of YHWH, that he might establish his word, which YHWH spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

16 Cuando todo Israel vio que el rey no los escuchaba, el pueblo respondió al rey diciendo: “¿Qué parte tenemos en David? No tenemos herencia en el hijo de Isaí. ¡A tus tiendas, Israel! Ahora ocúpate de tu propia casa, David”. Así que Israel se fue a sus tiendas.

When all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, "What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, Israel. Now see to your own house, David." So Israel departed to their tents.

17 Pero en cuanto a los hijos de Israel que vivían en las ciudades de Judá, Roboam reinó sobre ellos.

But as for the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

18 Entonces el rey Roboam envió a Adoram, que estaba a cargo de los hombres sometidos a trabajos forzados, y todo Israel lo mató a pedradas. El rey Roboam se apresuró a subir a su carro, para huir a Jerusalén.

Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the men subject to forced labor; and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. King Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

19 Así se rebeló Israel contra la casa de David hasta el día de hoy.

So Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.

20 Cuando todo Israel se enteró de que Jeroboam había regresado, enviaron a llamarlo a la congregación y lo hicieron rey de todo Israel. No hubo nadie que siguiera a la casa de David, sino sólo la tribu de Judá.

It happened, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, that they sent and called him to the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none who followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

21 Cuando Roboam llegó a Jerusalén, reunió a toda la casa de Judá y a la tribu de Benjamín, ciento ochenta mil hombres escogidos que eran guerreros, para luchar contra la casa de Israel, a fin de devolver el reino a Roboam hijo de Salomón.

When Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand chosen men, who were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.

22 Pero vino la palabra de Dios a Semaías, hombre de Dios, diciendo:

But the word of YHWH came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

23 “Habla a Roboam hijo de Salomón, rey de Judá, y a toda la casa de Judá y de Benjamín, y al resto del pueblo, diciendo:

"Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, saying,

24 ‘Dice el Señor: “No subiréis ni lucharéis contra vuestros hermanos, los hijos de Israel. Volved cada uno a su casa, porque esto viene de mí””. Así que escucharon la palabra de Yahvé, y volvieron y se fueron, según la palabra de Yahvé.

'Thus says YHWH, "You shall not go up, nor fight against your brothers, the children of Israel. Everyone return to his house; for this thing is of me."'" So they listened to the word of YHWH, and returned and went their way, according to the word of YHWH.

25 Entonces Jeroboam edificó Siquem en la región montañosa de Efraín, y vivió en ella; luego salió de allí y edificó Penuel.

Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and lived in it; and he went out from there, and built Penuel.

26 Jeroboam decía en su corazón: “Ahora el reino volverá a la casa de David.

Jeroboam said in his heart, "Now the kingdom will return to the house of David.

27 Si este pueblo sube a ofrecer sacrificios en la casa de Yahvé en Jerusalén, entonces el corazón de este pueblo se volverá a su señor, a Roboam, rey de Judá, y me matarán y volverán con Roboam, rey de Judá.”

If this people goes up to offer sacrifices in the house of YHWH at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me, and return to Rehoboam king of Judah."

28 Entonces el rey tomó consejo e hizo dos becerros de oro, y les dijo: “Es demasiado para ustedes subir a Jerusalén. Mirad y ved vuestros dioses, Israel, que os hicieron subir de la tierra de Egipto”.

Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold; and he said to the people, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Look and see your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt."

29 Puso el uno en Betel, y el otro lo puso en Dan.

He set the one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.

30 Esto se convirtió en un pecado, pues el pueblo llegó hasta Dan para adorar ante el de allí.

Then this thing became a sin, for the people went before the one at Bethel and before the one as far as Dan.

31 Hizo casas de altos, e hizo sacerdotes de entre todo el pueblo, que no eran de los hijos de Leví.

And he made houses on high places, and made priests from among all the people, who were not of the sons of Levi.

32 Jeroboam ordenó una fiesta en el octavo mes, a los quince días del mes, como la fiesta que hay en Judá, y subió al altar. Lo hizo en Betel, sacrificando a los becerros que había hecho, y colocó en Betel a los sacerdotes de los lugares altos que había hecho.

Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast that is in Judah, and he went up to the altar; he did so in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.

33 Subió al altar que había hecho en Betel el día quince del mes octavo, el mes que había ideado de su propio corazón, e instituyó una fiesta para los hijos de Israel, y subió al altar a quemar incienso.

He went up to the altar which he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart: and he ordained a feast for the children of Israel, and went up to the altar, to burn incense.
