Ester 1
1 En tiempo de Asuero —ese Asuero reinó desde la India hasta la Etiopía sobre ciento veinte y siete provincias—,
And it came to pass after these things in the days of Artaxerxes, —(this Artaxerxes ruled over a hundred and twenty-seven provinces from India)—
2 en aquel tiempo en que el rey Asuero se sentaba sobre su trono real en Susa, la capital,
in those days, when king Artaxerxes was on the throne in the city of Susa,
3 el año tercero de su reinado, dio un festín a todos sus príncipes y ministros, estando en su presencia también (los jefes) del ejército de los persas y de los medos, y los grandes y gobernadores de las provincias.
in the third year of his reign, he made a feast to his friends, and the other nations, and to the nobles of the Persians and Medes, and the chief of the satraps.
4 Con esta ocasión hizo delante de ellos ostentación de la riqueza y magnificencia de su reino y del pomposo esplendor de su grandeza, durante mucho tiempo, (a saber), durante ciento ochenta días.
And after this, after he had shewn to them the wealth of his kingdom, and the abundant glory of his wealth during a hundred and eighty days,
5 Pasados estos días, el rey dio a todo el pueblo, a grandes y chicos que se hallaban en Susa, la capital, un festín en el patio del jardín del palacio real.
when, [I say], the days of the marriage feast were completed, the king made a banquet to the nations who were present in the city six days, in the court of the king’s house,
6 Había toldos blancos, verdes y azules, sujetos con cordones de lino fino y de púrpura a anillos de plata y a columnas de mármol. Divanes de oro y de plata descansaban sobre un pavimento de pórfido, de mármol blanco, nácar y mármol negro.
[which was] adorned with [hangings] of fine linen and flax on cords of fine linen and purple, fastened to golden and silver studs, on pillars of Parian marble and stone: [there were] golden and silver couches on a pavement of emerald stone, and of pearl, and of Parian stone, and open-worked coverings variously flowered, [having] roses worked round about;
7 Se servían las bebidas en vasos de oro, de variadas formas, y el vino real en abundancia como correspondía a la liberalidad del rey.
gold and silver cups, and a small cup of carbuncle set out of the value of thirty thousand talents, abundant and sweet wine, which the king himself drank.
8 Según la orden del rey cada uno bebía sin que nadie le obligase, pues el rey había mandado a todos los intendentes de su casa que actuaran conforme al gusto de cada uno.
And this banquet was not according to the appointed law; but so the king would have it: and he charged the stewards to perform his will and that of the company.
9 También la reina Vasti dio un festín a las mujeres en el palacio real del rey Asuero.
Also Astin the queen made a banquet for the women in the palace where king Artaxerxes [dwelt].
10 El día séptimo, el rey cuyo corazón estaba alegre a causa del vino, mandó a Mehumán, Biztá, Harboná, Bigtá, Abagtá, Setar y Carcas, los siete eunucos que servían delante del rey Asuero,
Now on the seventh day the king, being merry, told Aman, and Bazan, and Tharrha, and Barazi, and Zatholtha, and Abataza, and Tharaba, the seven chamberlains, servants of king Artaxerxes,
11 que condujesen a su presencia a la reina Vasti, con la diadema real, para mostrar a la gente y a los grandes su belleza, pues era de extremada belleza.
to bring in the queen to him, to enthrone her, and crown her with the diadem, and to shew her to the princes, and her beauty to the nations: for she was beautiful.
12 La reina Vasti, empero, desacató la orden que el rey había mandado por medio de los eunucos, por lo cual el rey se irritó mucho y se encendió en él su cólera.
But queen Astin hearkened not to him to come with the chamberlains: so the king was grieved and angered.
13 Entonces el rey consultó a los sabios, conocedores de las costumbres, porque así respetaba el rey a todos los conocedores de la ley y del derecho.
And he said to his friends, Thus has Astin spoken: pronounce therefore upon this [case] law and judgment.
14 Los más allegados a él eran Carsená, Setar, Admata, Tarsís, Meres, Marsená y Memucán, siete príncipes de Persia y Media, que veían la cara del rey y ocupaban el primer rango en el reino.
So Arkesæus, and Sarsathæus, and Malisear, the princes of the Persians and Medes, who were near the king, who sat chief [in rank] by the king, drew near to him,
15 (Les preguntó: ) “Según la ley, ¿qué se debe hacer con la reina Vasti, por no haber obedecido la orden del rey Asuero enviada por medio de los eunucos?”
and reported to him according to the laws how it was proper to do to queen Astin, because she had not done the things commanded of the king by the chamberlains.
16 Respondió Memucán, delante del rey y los príncipes: “La reina Vasti no, solo ha ofendido al rey, sino a todos los príncipes y a todos los pueblos que están en todas las provincias del rey Asuero.
And Muchæus said to the king and to the princes, Queen Astin has not wronged the king only, but also all the king’s rulers and princes:
17 Porque lo hecho por la reina llegará a oídos de todas las mujeres; por lo cual estas menospreciarán a sus maridos, diciendo: “El rey Asuero mandó que presentasen delante de él a la reina Vasti, y ella no fue.
for he has told them the words of the queen, and how she disobeyed the king. As then, [said he], she refused [to obey] king Artaxerxes,
18 Desde hoy las princesas de Persia y Media, tan pronto como sepan este ejemplo de la reina, dirán (lo mismo) a todos los príncipes del rey; de donde resultarán muchos desprecios y mucha indignación.
so this day shall the other ladies of the chiefs of the Persians and Medes, having heard what she said to the king, dare in the same way to dishonour their husbands.
19 Si al rey le agrada, promúlguese un edicto real de su parte, y escríbase entre las leyes de los persas y medos, para que no haya más transgresiones: “Que Vasti no aparezca más ante el rey Asuero; y en cuanto a su dignidad real, otórguela el rey a otra que sea mejor que ella.
If then it seem good to the king, let him make a royal decree, and let it be written according to the laws of the Medes and Persians, and let him not alter [it]: and let not the queen come in to him any more; and let the king give her royalty to a woman better than she.
20 El edicto que el rey va a promulgar será conocido en todo su reino, por grande que sea, y todas las mujeres respetarán a sus maridos, desde el más grande hasta el más pequeño.”
And let the law of the king which he shall have made, be widely proclaimed, in his kingdom: and so shall all the women give honour to their husbands, from the poor even to the rich.
21 Este consejo pareció bien al rey y a los príncipes; e hizo el rey conforme al parecer de Memucán.
And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did as Muchæus had said,
22 Envió cartas a todas las provincias del rey, a cada provincia en la escritura correspondiente y a cada pueblo en su lengua, (ordenando) que todo marido había de ser señor en su casa, y que esto se publicase en el lenguaje de cada pueblo.
and sent into all his kingdom through the several provinces, according to their language, in order that men might be feared in their own houses.
