Eclesiastés 1
1 Palabras del Predicador, hijo de David, rey de Jerusalén.
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem:
2 Vanidad de vanidades, decía el Predicador; vanidad de vanidades; todo es vanidad.
“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”
3 ¿Qué provecho saca el hombre de todo el trabajo con que se afana debajo del sol?
What does man gain from all his labour in which he labours under the sun?
4 Una generación se va y otra generación viene, mas la tierra es siempre la misma.
One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever.
5 El sol se levanta, el sol se pone, y camina presuroso hacia su lugar, donde nace (de nuevo).
The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hurries to its place where it rises.
6 El viento se dirige hacia el mediodía, declina luego hacia el norte; gira y gira sin cesar el viento, y así retorna girando.
The wind goes towards the south, and turns around to the north. It turns around continually as it goes, and the wind returns again to its courses.
7 Todos los ríos van al mar, y el mar nunca se llena; al lugar de donde los ríos vienen, allá vuelven para correr de nuevo.
All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers flow, there they flow again.
8 Todas las cosas son afanes, más de cuanto se puede decir. Los ojos nunca se hartan de ver, ni los oídos se llenan de oír.
All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
9 Lo que fue, eso será; lo que se hizo, lo mismo se hará; nada hay de nuevo bajo el sol.
That which has been is that which shall be, and that which has been done is that which shall be done; and there is no new thing under the sun.
10 Si hay una cosa de que dicen: “Mira, esto es nuevo”, también esa existió ya en los tiempos que nos precedieron.
Is there a thing of which it may be said, “Behold, this is new”? It has been long ago, in the ages which were before us.
11 No queda memoria de las cosas pasadas, ni recuerdo de las futuras entre los que han de venir.
There is no memory of the former; neither shall there be any memory of the latter that are to come, amongst those that shall come after.
12 Yo, el Predicador, fui rey sobre Israel, en Jerusalén.
I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13 Y me puse en el corazón averiguar y escudriñar, por medio de la sabiduría, todo cuanto se hace debajo del cielo. Esta dura tarea ha dado Dios a los hijos de los hombres, para que se ocupen en ella.
I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.
14 He visto todo cuanto se hace bajo el sol, y he aquí que todo es vanidad y correr tras el viento.
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.
15 Lo torcido no puede enderezarse, y es imposible contar las cosas que faltan.
That which is crooked can’t be made straight; and that which is lacking can’t be counted.
16 Dije para mí esto: “Mira cómo soy grande; soy más sabio que cuantos antes de mí fueron en Jerusalén; inmensa es la sabiduría y ciencia que mi corazón ha visto.”
I said to myself, “Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.”
17 Propuse en mi ánimo conocer la sabiduría, y asimismo la necedad y la insensatez; y aprendí que también esto es correr tras el viento.
I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind.
18 Pues donde hay mucho saber hay mucha molestia; quien aumenta la ciencia, aumenta el dolor.
For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
