Eclesiastés 4
1 Volví (a pensar) y vi todas las opresiones que se cometen debajo del sol; y miré a los oprimidos en sus lágrimas, sin haber nadie que los consolase, sujetos a la violencia de sus opresores sin tener consolador.
Then I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold, the tears of those who were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.
2 Por lo cual llamé dichosos a los hombres que ya murieron, más que a los vivos que viven todavía.
Therefore I praised the dead who have been long dead more than the living who are yet alive.
3 Y más dichoso que ambos, a aquel que no ha sido, ni vio las cosas malas que se hacen bajo el sol.
Yes, better than them both is him who has not yet been, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
4 Vi además que todo trabajo y todo esmero que un hombre emplea en sus obras provoca la envidia de su prójimo. También esto es vanidad y correr tras el viento.
Then I saw all the labour and achievement that is the envy of a man’s neighbour. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
5 Cruza el necio sus manos, y come su propia carne (diciendo):
The fool folds his hands together and ruins himself.
6 “Más vale una sola mano llena con reposo, que las dos llenas con trabajo y correr tras el viento.”
Better is a handful, with quietness, than two handfuls with labour and chasing after wind.
7 Reflexioné de nuevo y reparé en otra vanidad debajo del sol:
Then I returned and saw vanity under the sun.
8 Un hombre solo, sin compañero, sin hijo ni hermano, y con todo no cesa de trabajar, ni se hartan de riquezas sus ojos. (No dice): “¿Para quién trabajo yo y me privo de los placeres?” También esto es vanidad y grave molestia.
There is one who is alone, and he has neither son nor brother. There is no end to all of his labour, neither are his eyes satisfied with wealth. “For whom then do I labour and deprive my soul of enjoyment?” This also is vanity. Yes, it is a miserable business.
9 Más valen dos que uno solo; porque así sacan más fruto de su trabajo.
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labour.
10 Pues si caen, el uno puede levantar a su compañero. Mas ¡ay del solo si cae y no hay segundo que le levante!
For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.
11 Del mismo modo si duermen dos juntos, se calientan mutuamente; uno solo ¿cómo podrá calentarse?
Again, if two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one keep warm alone?
12 Y si alguien ataca a uno, los dos le resisten; pues una cuerda triplicada difícilmente se rompe.
If a man prevails against one who is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
13 Más vale un joven pobre y sabio que un rey viejo e insensato, que ya no sabe ponderar los consejos.
Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who doesn’t know how to receive admonition any more.
14 Pues aquel sale de la cárcel y llega a reinar, aunque nació pobre en el reino de este.
For out of prison he came out to be king; yes, even in his kingdom he was born poor.
15 Y vi cómo todos los vivientes debajo del sol iban en pos del joven sucesor, quien en lugar del (rey) se levantaba.
I saw all the living who walk under the sun, that they were with the youth, the other, who succeeded him.
16 Era infinito el número de toda aquella gente, de todos aquellos a cuyo frente él marchaba, y sin embargo los que vendrán después, no se alegrarán por él. También esto es vanidad y correr tras el viento.
There was no end of all the people, even of all them over whom he was—yet those who come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a chasing after wind.
