2 Samuel 11

1 Al año siguiente, al tiempo que los reyes suelen salir a campaña, envió David a Joab y con él a sus servidores y a todo Israel, para que devastaran (el país) de los hijos de Ammón y pusieran sitio a Rabbá; David, empero, se quedó en Jerusalén.

At the return of the year, at the time when kings go out, David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem.

2 Una tarde, cuando David se levantó de su cama y se puso a pasear sobre el terrado del palacio real, vio desde el terrado a una mujer que se estaba bañando. La mujer era muy hermosa.

At evening, David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. From the roof, he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to look at.

3 David hizo averiguar quién era aquella mujer. Le dijeron: “Es Betsabee, hija de Eliam, mujer de Urías, el heteo.”

David sent and enquired after the woman. One said, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, Uriah the Hittite’s wife?”

4 Entonces David envió mensajeros y la tomó; y llegada que hubo a su presencia se acostó con ella, apenas purificada de su inmundicia. Luego ella volvió a su casa,

David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in to him, and he lay with her (for she was purified from her uncleanness); and she returned to her house.

5 y habiendo concebido mandó aviso a David, diciendo: “Estoy encinta.”

The woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, “I am with child.”

6 Luego David mandó a Joab esta orden: “Envíame a Urías, el heteo. Y Joab le envió a David.

David sent to Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” Joab sent Uriah to David.

7 Llegado Urías a David, este preguntó cómo estaba Joab y la gente y cómo andaba la guerra.

When Uriah had come to him, David asked him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.

8 Después dijo David a Urías: “Baja a tu casa y lava tus pies.” Y salió Urías de la casa del rey y le siguió la comida de la mesa del rey.

David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” Uriah departed out of the king’s house, and a gift from the king was sent after him.

9 Pero Urías durmió a la entrada de la casa del rey con los demás siervos de su señor, y no bajó a su casa.

But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and didn’t go down to his house.

10 Lo contaron a David, diciendo: “Urías no ha bajado a su casa.” Y dijo David a Urías: “¿No has venido de viaje? ¿Por qué, pues, no has bajado a tu casa?”

When they had told David, saying, “Uriah didn’t go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “Haven’t you come from a journey? Why didn’t you go down to your house?”

11 Urías respondió a David: “El Arca e Israel y Judá viven en tiendas, y mi señor Joab, con los servidores de mi señor, están acampados al raso; ¿e iría yo a mi casa, para comer y beber y acostarme con mi mujer? ¡Por tu vida, y por la vida de tu alma, que no haré tal cosa!”

Uriah said to David, “The ark, Israel, and Judah, are staying in tents; and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open field. Shall I then go into my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing!”

12 Replicó David a Urías: “Quédate aquí también hoy, y mañana te despacharé.” Y se quedó Urías en Jerusalén aquel día y el día siguiente.

David said to Uriah, “Stay here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next day.

13 David lo convidó a comer y beber con él, procurando embriagarlo, mas a la noche salió (Urías) y se acostó para dormir con los siervos de su señor; y no bajó a su casa.

When David had called him, he ate and drank before him; and he made him drunk. At evening, he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but didn’t go down to his house.

14 Al día siguiente David escribió una carta a Joab, y se la remitió por mano de Urías.

In the morning, David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

15 Decía en la carta: “Poned a Urías en aquel punto del frente donde más recio sea el combate, y retiraos de él para que sea herido y muera.”

He wrote in the letter, saying, “Send Uriah to the forefront of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck and die.”

16 Joab, que sitiaba la ciudad, puso entonces a Urías en el lugar donde sabía que estaban los guerreros más valientes.

When Joab kept watch on the city, he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew that valiant men were.

17 Y cuando los hombres de la ciudad hicieron una salida y atacaron a Joab, cayeron del pueblo algunos de los siervos de David, y murió también Urías, el heteo.

The men of the city went out and fought with Joab. Some of the people fell, even of David’s servants; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

18 Luego Joab mandó (un mensajero) e informó a David de todos los detalles del combate,

Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;

19 y dio esta orden al mensajero: “Cuando acabares de contar al rey todos los detalles del combate,

and he commanded the messenger, saying, “When you have finished telling all the things concerning the war to the king,

20 y el rey montando en cólera te pregunte: «¿Por qué os acercasteis a la ciudad para combatirla? ¿No sabíais que desde el muro habían de tirar sobre vosotros?

it shall be that, if the king’s wrath arise, and he asks you, ‘Why did you go so near to the city to fight? Didn’t you know that they would shoot from the wall?

21 ¿Quién mató a Abimelec, hijo de Jerobaal? ¿No fue una mujer que arrojó sobre él desde la muralla la piedra superior de un molino, de modo que murió en Tebes? ¿Cómo, pues, os acercasteis a la muralla?» Tú entonces le dirás: «Quedó muerto también tu siervo Urías, el heteo».”

Who struck Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Didn’t a woman cast an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?’ then you shall say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is also dead.’”

22 Fue, pues, el mensajero, y llegado a David le contó todo lo que Joab le había mandado.

So the messenger went, and came and showed David all that Joab had sent him for.

23 Dijo el mensajero a David: “Esas gentes han tenido una ventaja sobre nosotros. Hicieron una salida contra nosotros al campo y las rechazamos hasta la entrada de la puerta.

The messenger said to David, “The men prevailed against us, and came out to us into the field; and we were on them even to the entrance of the gate.

24 Pero los flecheros tiraron desde la muralla sobre tus siervos, y murieron algunos de los siervos del rey; y también tu siervo Urías, el heteo, quedó muerto.”

The shooters shot at your servants from off the wall; and some of the king’s servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is also dead.”

25 Entonces dijo David al mensajero: “Así dirás a Joab: No te aflijas por este asunto, porque la espada devora una vez a este, y otra vez a otro. Intensifica tu combate contra la ciudad y destrúyela. Y tú mismo, aliéntalo.”

Then David said to the messenger, “Tell Joab, ‘Don’t let this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another. Make your battle stronger against the city, and overthrow it.’ Encourage him.”

26 Cuando la mujer de Urías supo que había muerto su marido Urías, hizo duelo por su señor;

When Uriah’s wife heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.

27 y pasado el duelo, envió David y la recogió en su casa. Ella fue su mujer, y le dio un hijo. Pero lo que David había hecho fue malo a los ojos de Yahvé.

When the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.
