2 Samuel 1

1 Después de la muerte de Saúl, estando David de vuelta de la derrota de los amalecitas, y hallándose ya dos días en Siceleg,

After the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag,

2 sucedió que al tercer día llegó un hombre del campamento de Saúl, rasgados sus vestidos y cubierta su cabeza de polvo; el cual llegado a David se postró en tierra e hizo reverencia.

on the third day, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes torn and earth on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the earth and showed respect.

3 David le preguntó: “¿De dónde vienes?” “He podido escapar del campamento de Israel”, contestó él.

David said to him, “Where do you come from?” He said to him, “I have escaped out of the camp of Israel.”

4 David le dijo: “¿Qué ha sucedido? Cuéntamelo.” A lo que respondió: “Huyó el pueblo de la batalla, y muchos del pueblo han caído y perecieron; también Saúl y su hijo Jonatán han sido muertos.”

David said to him, “How did it go? Please tell me.” He answered, “The people have fled from the battle, and many of the people also have fallen and are dead. Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.”

5 Preguntó entonces David al mozo que le daba la noticia: “¿Cómo sabes que han muerto Saúl y su hijo Jonatán?”

David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?”

6 Respondió el mozo que le traía la noticia: “Yo me hallaba por casualidad en el monte Gelboé, y vi a Saúl arrojado sobre su lanza, cuando los carros y la gente de a caballo le daban ya alcance.

The young man who told him said, “As I happened by chance on Mount Gilboa, behold, Saul was leaning on his spear; and behold, the chariots and the horsemen followed close behind him.

7 Volviéndose él entonces hacia atrás, me vio y me llamó. Yo respondí: “Heme aquí.”

When he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. I answered, ‘Here I am.’

8 Y me preguntó: “¿Quién eres tú?” Le dije: “Soy un amalecita.”

He said to me, ‘Who are you?’ I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’

9 Tras lo cual él me dijo: “Ponte sobre mí y mátame; porque se ha apoderado de mí angustia mortal, y mi vida está aún toda en mí.”

He said to me, ‘Please stand beside me, and kill me, for anguish has taken hold of me because my life lingers in me.’

10 Me puse entonces sobre él y lo maté; porque sabía que no podía vivir después de su caída. Y tomé la diadema que había sobre su cabeza, y el brazalete que tenía en su brazo, y los he traído aquí a mi señor.”

So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.”

11 Entonces asió David sus vestidos y los rasgó, haciendo lo mismo todos cuantos estaban con él.

Then David took hold on his clothes and tore them; and all the men who were with him did likewise.

12 E hicieron duelo y lloraron, ayunando hasta la tarde, por Saúl y por Jonatán, su hijo, y por el pueblo de Yahvé y por la casa de Israel; pues habían caído al filo de la espada.

They mourned, wept, and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.

13 Después dijo David al mozo que le había traído la noticia: “¿De dónde eres?” Respondió: “Soy hijo de un extranjero, amalecita.”

David said to the young man who told him, “Where are you from?” He answered, “I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite.”

14 “David le dijo: “¿Cómo no tuviste temor de extender tu mano para dar muerte al ungido de Yahvé?”

David said to him, “Why were you not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy the LORD’s anointed?”

15 Y llamó David a uno de los jóvenes, al cual dijo: “¡Acércate y mátalo!” Y él lo hirió, y murió (el amalecita),

David called one of the young men and said, “Go near, and cut him down!” He struck him so that he died.

16 mientra David le decía: “Tu sangre caiga sobre tu cabeza; pues tu misma boca ha dado testimonio contra ti, al decir: Yo he dado muerte al ungido de Yahvé.”

David said to him, “Your blood be on your head, for your mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have slain the LORD’s anointed.’”

17 David entonó la siguiente elegía por Saúl y Jonatán, su hijo;

David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son

18 y mandó enseñarla a los hijos de Judá. Es el (canto del) arco, que está escrito en el Libro del Justo:

(and he commanded them to teach the children of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in the book of Jashar):

19 ¡La flor de Israel, traspasada, yace sobre tus alturas! ¡Cómo cayeron los héroes!

“Your glory, Israel, was slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!

20 No lo digáis en Gat; no publiquéis la nueva en las calles de Ascalón, que no se alegren las hijas de los filisteos ni salten de gozo las hijas de los incircuncisos.

Don’t tell it in Gath. Don’t publish it in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

21 ¡Montes de Gelboé, ni rocío ni lluvia vuelvan a caer sobre vosotros! ni seáis campos de primicias. Pues allí fue arrojado el escudo de los héroes, el escudo de Saúl, cual si no fuera ungido con óleo.

You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain on you, and no fields of offerings; for there the shield of the mighty was defiled and cast away, the shield of Saul was not anointed with oil.

22 El arco de Jonatán no disparó flecha sin sangre de traspasados, sin grasa de valientes; ni tornó vacía la espada de Saúl.

From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, Jonathan’s bow didn’t turn back. Saul’s sword didn’t return empty.

23 ¡Saúl y Jonatán, amables y hermosos, inseparables en la vida y en la muerte! ¡Más ligeros que las águilas, más fuertes que los leones!

Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives. In their death, they were not divided. They were swifter than eagles. They were stronger than lions.

24 Hijas de Israel, llorad a Saúl, quien os vestía de rica escarlata, y colocaba adornos de oro sobre vuestro ropaje.

You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you delicately in scarlet, who put ornaments of gold on your clothing.

25 ¡Cómo cayeron los héroes en el campo de batalla! ¡Cómo fue traspasado Jonatán sobre tus alturas!

How the mighty have fallen in the middle of the battle! Jonathan was slain on your high places.

26 La angustia me oprime por ti, oh hermano mío, Jonatán! Tú eras toda mi delicia; tu amor era para mí más precioso que el amor de las mujeres.

I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan. You have been very pleasant to me. Your love to me was wonderful, surpassing the love of women.

27 ¡Cómo han caído los héroes! ¡Cómo han perecido las armas del combate!

How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war have perished!”
