1 vyavasthaa bhavi. syanma"ngalaanaa. m chaayaasvaruupaa na ca vastuunaa. m muurttisvaruupaa tato heto rnitya. m diiyamaanairekavidhai rvaar. sikabalibhi. h "sara. naagatalokaan siddhaan karttu. m kadaapi na "saknoti|
For the law having a shadow of the good [things] to come, not the very image of the things, can never with the same sacrifices year by year, which they offer continually, make perfect them that draw nigh.
2 yadya"sak. syat tarhi te. saa. m baliinaa. m daana. m ki. m na nyavartti. syata? yata. h sevaakaari. svekak. rtva. h pavitriibhuute. su te. saa. m ko. api paapabodha. h puna rnaabhavi. syat|
Else would they not have ceased to be offered? because the worshippers, having been once cleansed, would have had no more consciousness of sins.
3 kintu tai rbalidaanai. h prativatsara. m paapaanaa. m smaara. na. m jaayate|
But in those [sacrifices] there is a remembrance made of sins year by year.
4 yato v. r.saa. naa. m chaagaanaa. m vaa rudhire. na paapamocana. m na sambhavati|
For it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins.
5 etatkaara. naat khrii. s.tena jagat pravi"syedam ucyate, yathaa, "ne. s.tvaa bali. m na naivedya. m deho me nirmmitastvayaa|
Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, But a body didst thou prepare for me;
6 na ca tva. m balibhi rhavyai. h paapaghnai rvaa pratu. syasi|
In whole burnt offerings and [sacrifices] for sin thou hadst no pleasure:
7 avaadi. sa. m tadaivaaha. m pa"sya kurvve samaagama. m| dharmmagranthasya sarge me vidyate likhitaa kathaa| ii"sa mano. abhilaa. saste mayaa sampuurayi. syate|"
Then said I, Lo, I am come (In the roll of the book it is written of me) To do thy will, O God.
8 ityasmin prathamato ye. saa. m daana. m vyavasthaanusaaraad bhavati taanyadhi tenedamukta. m yathaa, balinaivedyahavyaani paapaghna ncopacaaraka. m, nemaani vaa nchasi tva. m hi na caite. su pratu. syasiiti|
Saying above, Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and [sacrifices] for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein (the which are offered according to the law),
9 tata. h para. m tenokta. m yathaa, "pa"sya mano. abhilaa. sa. m te karttu. m kurvve samaagama. m;" dvitiiyam etad vaakya. m sthiriikarttu. m sa prathama. m lumpati|
then hath he said, Lo, I am come to do thy will. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
10 tena mano. abhilaa. se. na ca vaya. m yii"sukhrii. s.tasyaikak. rtva. h sva"sariirotsargaat pavitriik. rtaa abhavaama|
By which will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
11 aparam ekaiko yaajaka. h pratidinam upaasanaa. m kurvvan yai"sca paapaani naa"sayitu. m kadaapi na "sakyante taad. r"saan ekaruupaan baliin puna. h punaruts. rjan ti. s.thati|
And every priest indeed standeth day by day ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, the which can never take away sins:
12 kintvasau paapanaa"sakam eka. m bali. m datvaanantakaalaartham ii"svarasya dak. si. na upavi"sya
but he, when he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
13 yaavat tasya "satravastasya paadapii. tha. m na bhavanti taavat pratiik. samaa. nasti. s.thati|
henceforth expecting till his enemies be made the footstool of his feet.
14 yata ekena balidaanena so. anantakaalaartha. m puuyamaanaan lokaan saadhitavaan|
For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
15 etasmin pavitra aatmaapyasmaaka. m pak. se pramaa. nayati
And the Holy Spirit also beareth witness to us; for after he hath said,
16 "yato hetostaddinaat param aha. m tai. h saarddham ima. m niyama. m sthiriikari. syaamiiti prathamata uktvaa parame"svare. neda. m kathita. m, te. saa. m citte mama vidhiin sthaapayi. syaami te. saa. m mana. hsu ca taan lekhi. syaami ca,
This is the covenant that I will make with them After those days, saith the Lord: I will put my laws on their heart, And upon their mind also will I write them; [then saith he],
17 apara nca te. saa. m paapaanyaparaadhaa. m"sca puna. h kadaapi na smaari. syaami|"
And their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
18 kintu yatra paapamocana. m bhavati tatra paapaarthakabalidaana. m puna rna bhavati|
Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
19 ato he bhraatara. h, yii"so rudhire. na pavitrasthaanaprave"saayaasmaakam utsaaho bhavati,
Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holy place by the blood of Jesus,
20 yata. h so. asmadartha. m tiraskari. nyaarthata. h sva"sariire. na naviina. m jiivanayukta ncaika. m panthaana. m nirmmitavaan,
by the way which he dedicated for us, a new and living way, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
21 apara nce"svariiyaparivaarasyaadhyak. sa eko mahaayaajako. asmaakamasti|
and [having] a great priest over the house of God;
22 ato hetorasmaabhi. h saralaanta. hkara. nai rd. r.dhavi"svaasai. h paapabodhaat prak. saalitamanobhi rnirmmalajale snaata"sariirai"sce"svaram upaagatya pratyaa"saayaa. h pratij naa ni"scalaa dhaarayitavyaa|
let us draw near with a true heart in fulness of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience: and having our body washed with pure water,
23 yato yastaam a"ngiik. rtavaan sa vi"svasaniiya. h|
let us hold fast the confession of our hope that it waver not; for he is faithful that promised:
24 apara. m premni satkriyaasu caikaikasyotsaahav. rddhyartham asmaabhi. h paraspara. m mantrayitavya. m|
and let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works;
25 apara. m katipayalokaa yathaa kurvvanti tathaasmaabhi. h sabhaakara. na. m na parityaktavya. m parasparam upade. s.tavya nca yatastat mahaadinam uttarottara. m nika. tavartti bhavatiiti yu. smaabhi rd. r"syate|
not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting [one another]; and so much the more, as ye see the day drawing nigh.
26 satyamatasya j naanapraapte. h para. m yadi vaya. m sva. mcchayaa paapaacaara. m kurmmastarhi paapaanaa. m k. rte. anyat kimapi balidaana. m naava"si. syate
For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more a sacrifice for sins,
27 kintu vicaarasya bhayaanakaa pratiik. saa ripunaa"sakaanalasya taapa"scaava"si. syate|
but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which shall devour the adversaries.
28 ya. h ka"scit muusaso vyavasthaam avamanyate sa dayaa. m vinaa dvayostis. r.naa. m vaa saak. si. naa. m pramaa. nena hanyate,
A man that hath set at nought Moses’ law dieth without compassion on [the word of] two or three witnesses:
29 tasmaat ki. m budhyadhve yo jana ii"svarasya putram avajaanaati yena ca pavitriik. rto. abhavat tat niyamasya rudhiram apavitra. m jaanaati, anugrahakaram aatmaanam apamanyate ca, sa kiyanmahaaghoratarada. n.dasya yogyo bhavi. syati?
of how much sorer punishment, think ye, shall he be judged worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
30 yata. h parame"svara. h kathayati, "daana. m phalasya matkarmma suucita. m pradadaamyaha. m|" punarapi, "tadaa vicaarayi. syante pare"sena nijaa. h prajaa. h|" ida. m ya. h kathitavaan ta. m vaya. m jaaniima. h|
For we know him that said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.
31 amare"svarasya karayo. h patana. m mahaabhayaanaka. m|
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
32 he bhraatara. h, puurvvadinaani smarata yatastadaanii. m yuuya. m diipti. m praapya bahudurgatiruupa. m sa. mgraama. m sahamaanaa ekato nindaakle"sai. h kautukiik. rtaa abhavata,
But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were enlightened, ye endured a great conflict of sufferings;
33 anyata"sca tadbhoginaa. m samaa. m"sino. abhavata|
partly, being made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, becoming partakers with them that were so used.
34 yuuya. m mama bandhanasya du. hkhena du. hkhino. abhavata, yu. smaakam uttamaa nityaa ca sampatti. h svarge vidyata iti j naatvaa saananda. m sarvvasvasyaapahara. nam asahadhva nca|
For ye both had compassion on them that were in bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your possessions, knowing that ye have for yourselves a better possession and an abiding one.
35 ataeva mahaapuraskaarayukta. m yu. smaakam utsaaha. m na parityajata|
Cast not away therefore your boldness, which hath great recompense of reward.
36 yato yuuya. m yene"svarasyecchaa. m paalayitvaa pratij naayaa. h phala. m labhadhva. m tadartha. m yu. smaabhi rdhairyyaavalambana. m karttavya. m|
For ye have need of patience, that, having done the will of God, ye may receive the promise.
37 yenaagantavya. m sa svalpakaalaat param aagami. syati na ca vilambi. syate|
For yet a very little while, He that cometh shall come, and shall not tarry.
38 "pu. nyavaan jano vi"svaasena jiivi. syati kintu yadi nivarttate tarhi mama manastasmin na to. sa. m yaasyati|"
But my righteous one shall live by faith: And if he shrink back, my soul hath no pleasure in him.
39 kintu vaya. m vinaa"sajanikaa. m dharmmaat niv. rtti. m na kurvvaa. naa aatmana. h paritraa. naaya vi"svaasa. m kurvvaamahe|
But we are not of them that shrink back unto perdition; but of them that have faith unto the saving of the soul.
