1 ตต: สภาสฺถา: สรฺวฺวโลกา อุตฺถาย ตํ ปีลาตสมฺมุขํ นีตฺวาโปฺรทฺย วกฺตุมาเรภิเร,
The whole council rose and took him to Pilate.
2 สฺวมภิษิกฺตํ ราชานํ วทนฺตํ ไกมรราชาย กรทานํ นิเษธนฺตํ ราชฺยวิปรฺยฺยยํ กุรฺตฺตุํ ปฺรวรฺตฺตมานมฺ เอน ปฺราปฺตา วยํฯ
There they started to accuse him. “We found this man deceiving our nation, telling people not to pay taxes to Caesar, and claiming he is Messiah, a king,” they said.
3 ตทา ปีลาตสฺตํ ปฺฤษฺฏวานฺ ตฺวํ กึ ยิหูทียานำ ราชา? ส ปฺรตฺยุวาจ ตฺวํ สตฺยมุกฺตวานฺฯ
“Are you the King of the Jews?” Pilate asked him. “So you say,” replied Jesus.
4 ตทา ปีลาต: ปฺรธานยาชกาทิโลกานฺ ชคาทฺ, อหเมตสฺย กมปฺยปราธํ นาปฺตวานฺฯ
Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I don't find this man guilty of any crime.”
5 ตตเสฺต ปุน: สาหมิโน ภูตฺวาวทนฺ, เอษ คาลีล เอตตฺสฺถานปรฺยฺยนฺเต สรฺวฺวสฺมินฺ ยิหูทาเทเศ สรฺวฺวาโลฺลกานุปทิศฺย กุปฺรวฺฤตฺตึ คฺราหีตวานฺฯ
But they insisted, saying, “He is inciting rebellion all over Judea with his teachings, from Galilee to right here in Jerusalem.”
6 ตทา ปีลาโต คาลีลปฺรเทศสฺย นาม ศฺรุตฺวา ปปฺรจฺฉ, กิมยํ คาลีลีโย โลก: ?
When he heard this, Pilate asked, “Is this man a Galilean?”
7 ตต: ส คาลีลฺปฺรเทศียเหโรทฺราชสฺย ตทา สฺถิเตสฺตสฺย สมีเป ยีศุํ เปฺรษยามาสฯ
When he discovered that Jesus came under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who was also in Jerusalem at the time.
8 ตทา เหโรทฺ ยีศุํ วิโลกฺย สนฺตุโตษ, ยต: ส ตสฺย พหุวฺฤตฺตานฺตศฺรวณาตฺ ตสฺย กิญิจทาศฺจรฺยฺยกรฺมฺม ปศฺยติ อิตฺยาศำ กฺฤตฺวา พหุกาลมารภฺย ตํ ทฺรษฺฏุํ ปฺรยาสํ กฺฤตวานฺฯ
Herod was very pleased to see Jesus since he had wanted to meet him for a long time. He had heard about Jesus and was hoping to see him perform a miracle.
9 ตสฺมาตฺ ตํ พหุกถา: ปปฺรจฺฉ กินฺตุ ส ตสฺย กสฺยาปิ วากฺยสฺย ปฺรตฺยุตฺตรํ โนวาจฯ
He asked Jesus many questions, but Jesus did not answer him at all.
10 อถ ปฺรธานยาชกา อธฺยาปกาศฺจ โปฺรตฺติษฺฐนฺต: สาหเสน ตมปวทิตุํ ปฺราเรภิเรฯ
The chief priests and religious teachers stood there, angrily accusing him.
11 เหโรทฺ ตสฺย เสนาคณศฺจ ตมวชฺญาย อุปหาสเตฺวน ราชวสฺตฺรํ ปริธาปฺย ปุน: ปีลาตํ ปฺรติ ตํ ปฺราหิโณตฺฯ
Herod and his soldiers treated Jesus with contempt and mocked him. Then they placed a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.
12 ปูรฺวฺวํ เหโรทฺปีลาตโย: ปรสฺปรํ ไวรภาว อาสีตฺ กินฺตุ ตทฺทิเน ทฺวโย เรฺมลนํ ชาตมฺฯ
From that day on Herod and Pilate were friends—before that they had been enemies.
13 ปศฺจาตฺ ปีลาต: ปฺรธานยาชกานฺ ศาสกานฺ โลกำศฺจ ยุคปทาหูย พภาเษ,
Pilate called together the chief priests, rulers, and the people,
14 ราชฺยวิปรฺยฺยยการโกยมฺ อิตฺยุกฺตฺวา มนุษฺยเมนํ มม นิกฏมาไนษฺฏ กินฺตุ ปศฺยต ยุษฺมากํ สมกฺษมฺ อสฺย วิจารํ กฺฤตฺวาปิ โปฺรกฺตาปวาทานุรูเปณาสฺย โกปฺยปราธ: สปฺรมาโณ น ชาต: ,
and told them, “You brought this man before me, accusing him of inciting the people to rebellion. I've carefully examined him in your presence, and do not find him guilty of the charges you have brought against him.
15 ยูยญฺจ เหโรท: สนฺนิเธา เปฺรษิตา มยา ตตฺราสฺย โกปฺยปราธเสฺตนาปิ น ปฺราปฺต: ฯ ปศฺยตาเนน วธเหตุกํ กิมปิ นาปราทฺธํฯ
Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. He has done nothing that demands he should be put to death.
16 ตสฺมาเทนํ ตาฑยิตฺวา วิหาสฺยามิฯ
So I will have him flogged and then release him.”
17 ตโตฺรตฺสเว เตษาเมโก โมจยิตวฺย: ฯ
18 อิติ เหโตเสฺต โปฺรจฺไจเรกทา โปฺรจุ: , เอนํ ทูรีกฺฤตฺย พรพฺพานามานํ โมจยฯ
But they all shouted together, “Kill this man, and release Barabbas to us.”
19 ส พรพฺพา นคร อุปปฺลววธาปราธาภฺยำ การายำ พทฺธ อาสีตฺฯ
(Barabbas had been put in prison for taking part in a rebellion in the city, and for murder.)
20 กินฺตุ ปีลาโต ยีศุํ โมจยิตุํ วาญฺฉนฺ ปุนสฺตานุวาจฯ
Pilate wanted to release Jesus, so spoke to them again.
21 ตถาเปฺยนํ กฺรุเศ วฺยธ กฺรุเศ วฺยเธติ วทนฺตเสฺต รุรุวุ: ฯ
But they kept on shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 ตต: ส ตฺฤตียวารํ ชคาท กุต: ? ส กึ กรฺมฺม กฺฤตวานฺ? นาหมสฺย กมปิ วธาปราธํ ปฺราปฺต: เกวลํ ตาฑยิตฺวามุํ ตฺยชามิฯ
Pilate asked them for the third time, “But why? What crime has he committed? I don't find any reason for executing him. So I will have him flogged and then release him.”
23 ตถาปิ เต ปุนเรนํ กฺรุเศ วฺยธ อิตฺยุกฺตฺวา โปฺรจฺไจรฺทฺฤฒํ ปฺรารฺถยาญฺจกฺริเร;
But they continued insisting with loud shouts, demanding that he be crucified. Their shouting succeeded,
24 ตต: ปฺรธานยาชกาทีนำ กลรเว ปฺรพเล สติ เตษำ ปฺรารฺถนารูปํ กรฺตฺตุํ ปีลาต อาทิเทศฯ
and Pilate gave the sentence they demanded.
25 ราชโทฺรหวธโยรปราเธน การาสฺถํ ยํ ชนํ เต ยยาจิเร ตํ โมจยิตฺวา ยีศุํ เตษามิจฺฉายำ สมารฺปยตฺฯ
He released the man imprisoned for rebellion and murder, but he sent Jesus to be put to death in accordance with their demands.
26 อถ เต ยีศุํ คฺฤหีตฺวา ยานฺติ, เอตรฺหิ คฺรามาทาคตํ ศิโมนนามานํ กุรีณียํ ชนํ ธฺฤตฺวา ยีโศ: ปศฺจานฺเนตุํ ตสฺย สฺกนฺเธ กฺรุศมรฺปยามาสุ: ฯ
As the soldiers led him away, they seized a man called Simon of Cyrene, who had come in from the countryside. They put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.
27 ตโต โลการณฺยมเธฺย พหุสฺตฺริโย รุทโตฺย วิลปนฺตฺยศฺจ ยีโศ: ปศฺจาทฺ ยยุ: ฯ
A large crowd followed him, along with women who were mourning and lamenting him.
28 กินฺตุ ส วฺยาฆุฏฺย ตา อุวาจ, เห ยิรูศาลโม นารฺโยฺย ยุยํ มทรฺถํ น รุทิตฺวา สฺวารฺถํ สฺวาปตฺยารฺถญฺจ รุทิติ;
Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, don't weep for me. Weep for yourselves and your children.
29 ปศฺยต ย: กทาปิ ครฺภวโตฺย นาภวนฺ สฺตนฺยญฺจ นาปายยนฺ ตาทฺฤศี รฺวนฺธฺยา ยทา ธนฺยา วกฺษฺยนฺติ ส กาล อายาติฯ
For the time is coming when they'll say, ‘Happy are those who are childless, and those who never had babies, and those who never nursed them.’
30 ตทา เห ไศลา อสฺมากมุปริ ปตต, เห อุปไศลา อสฺมานาจฺฉาทยต กถามีทฺฤศีํ โลกา วกฺษฺยนฺติฯ
They'll say to the mountains, ‘Fall down on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’
31 ยต: สเตชสิ ศาขินิ เจเทตทฺ ฆฏเต ตรฺหิ ศุษฺกศาขินิ กึ น ฆฏิษฺยเต?
For if they do this to wood that is green, what will happen when it's dried out?”
32 ตทา เต หนฺตุํ ทฺวาวปราธิเนา เตน สารฺทฺธํ นินฺยุ: ฯ
They also took two others who were criminals to be executed with him.
33 อปรํ ศิร: กปาลนามกสฺถานํ ปฺราปฺย ตํ กฺรุเศ วิวิธุ: ; ตทฺทฺวโยรปราธิโนเรกํ ตสฺย ทกฺษิโณ ตทนฺยํ วาเม กฺรุเศ วิวิธุ: ฯ
When they reached the place called the Skull they crucified him together with the criminals, one on his right, and the other on his left.
34 ตทา ยีศุรกถยตฺ, เห ปิตเรตานฺ กฺษมสฺว ยต เอเต ยตฺ กรฺมฺม กุรฺวฺวนฺติ ตนฺ น วิทุ: ; ปศฺจาตฺเต คุฏิกาปาตํ กฺฤตฺวา ตสฺย วสฺตฺราณิ วิภชฺย ชคฺฤหุ: ฯ
Jesus said, “Father, please forgive them, for they don't know what they're doing.” They divided up his clothes by throwing dice for them.
35 ตตฺร โลกสํฆสฺติษฺฐนฺ ททรฺศ; เต เตษำ ศาสกาศฺจ ตมุปหสฺย ชคทุ: , เอษ อิตรานฺ รกฺษิตวานฺ ยทีศฺวเรณาภิรุจิโต 'ภิษิกฺตสฺตฺราตา ภวติ ตรฺหิ สฺวมธุนา รกฺษตุฯ
The people stood and watched and the leaders sneered at Jesus. “He saved others, let him save himself, if he is really God's Messiah, the Chosen One,” they said.
36 ตทนฺย: เสนาคณา เอตฺย ตไสฺม อมฺลรสํ ทตฺวา ปริหสฺย โปฺรวาจ,
The soldiers also mocked him, coming up to him and offering him wine vinegar, saying,
37 เจตฺตฺวํ ยิหูทียานำ ราชาสิ ตรฺหิ สฺวํ รกฺษฯ
“If you're the King of the Jews, then save yourself.”
38 ยิหูทียานำ ราเชติ วากฺยํ ยูนานียโรมีเยพฺรียากฺษไร รฺลิขิตํ ตจฺฉิรส อูรฺทฺเธฺว'สฺถาปฺยตฯ
Above Jesus was a sign on which it was written, “This is the King of the Jews.”
39 ตโทภยปารฺศฺวโย รฺวิทฺเธา ยาวปราธิเนา ตโยเรกสฺตํ วินินฺทฺย พภาเษ, เจตฺตฺวมฺ อภิษิกฺโตสิ ตรฺหิ สฺวมาวาญฺจ รกฺษฯ
One of the criminals hanging there joined in the insults against Jesus. “Aren't you the Messiah?” he asked. “Then save yourself—and us too!”
40 กินฺตฺวนฺยสฺตํ ตรฺชยิตฺวาวทตฺ, อีศฺวราตฺตว กิญฺจิทปิ ภยํ นาสฺติ กึ? ตฺวมปิ สมานทณฺโฑสิ,
But the other criminal disagreed and argued with him, “Don't you fear God even when you're suffering the same punishment?” he asked.
41 โยคฺยปาเตฺร อาวำ สฺวสฺวกรฺมฺมณำ สมุจิตผลํ ปฺราปฺนุว: กินฺตฺวเนน กิมปิ นาปราทฺธํฯ
“For us the sentence is right since we're being punished for what we did, but this man didn't do anything wrong.”
42 อถ ส ยีศุํ ชคาท เห ปฺรเภ ภวานฺ สฺวราชฺยปฺรเวศกาเล มำ สฺมรตุฯ
Then he said, “Jesus, please remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
43 ตทา ยีศุ: กถิตวานฺ ตฺวำ ยถารฺถํ วทามิ ตฺวมไทฺยว มยา สารฺทฺธํ ปรโลกสฺย สุขสฺถานํ ปฺราปฺสฺยสิฯ
Jesus replied, “I promise you today you will be with me in paradise.”
44 อปรญฺจ ทฺวิตียยามาตฺ ตฺฤตียยามปรฺยฺยนฺตํ รเวเสฺตชโสนฺตรฺหิตตฺวาตฺ สรฺวฺวเทโศ'นฺธกาเรณาวฺฤโต
By this time it was around noon and darkness fell over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
45 มนฺทิรสฺย ยวนิกา จ ฉิทฺยมานา ทฺวิธา พภูวฯ
The sun's light was shut out, and the Temple veil was torn in two.
46 ตโต ยีศุรุจฺไจรุวาจ, เห ปิต รฺมมาตฺมานํ ตว กเร สมรฺปเย, อิตฺยุกฺตฺวา ส ปฺราณานฺ ชเหาฯ
Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, I place myself in your hands.” Having said this he breathed his last.
47 ตไทตา ฆฏนา ทฺฤษฺฏฺวา ศตเสนาปติรีศฺวรํ ธนฺยมุกฺตฺวา กถิตวานฺ อยํ นิตานฺตํ สาธุมนุษฺย อาสีตฺฯ
When the centurion saw what had happened he praised God and said, “Surely this man was innocent.”
48 อถ ยาวนฺโต โลกา ทฺรษฺฏุมฺ อาคตาเสฺต ตา ฆฏนา ทฺฤษฺฏฺวา วกฺษ: สุ กราฆาตํ กฺฤตฺวา วฺยาจุฏฺย คตา: ฯ
When all the crowds that had come to watch saw what happened they went home beating their chests in grief.
49 ยีโศ รฺชฺญาตโย ยา ยา โยษิตศฺจ คาลีลเสฺตน สารฺทฺธมายาตาสฺตา อปิ ทูเร สฺถิตฺวา ตตฺ สรฺวฺวํ ททฺฤศุ: ฯ
But all those who knew Jesus, including the women who'd followed him from Galilee, watched from a distance.
50 ตทา ยิหูทียานำ มนฺตฺรณำ กฺริยาญฺจาสมฺมนฺยมาน อีศฺวรสฺย ราชตฺวมฺ อเปกฺษมาโณ
There was a man called Joseph who was good and honest. He was a member of the council,
51 ยิหูทิเทศีโย 'ริมถียนครีโย ยูษผฺนามา มนฺตฺรี ภโทฺร ธารฺมฺมิกศฺจ ปุมานฺ
but he hadn't agreed with its decisions and actions. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea, and was waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God.
52 ปีลาตานฺติกํ คตฺวา ยีโศ เรฺทหํ ยยาเจฯ
Joseph went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.
53 ปศฺจาทฺ วปุรวโรหฺย วาสสา สํเวษฺฏฺย ยตฺร โกปิ มานุโษ นาสฺถาปฺยต ตสฺมินฺ ไศเล สฺวาเต ศฺมศาเน ตทสฺถาปยตฺฯ
Once he'd taken it down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth. He laid Jesus in an unused tomb cut into the rock.
54 ตทฺทินมาโยชนียํ ทินํ วิศฺรามวารศฺจ สมีป: ฯ
It was preparation day and the Sabbath would soon begin.
55 อปรํ ยีศุนา สารฺทฺธํ คาลีล อาคตา โยษิต: ปศฺจาทิตฺวา ศฺมศาเน ตตฺร ยถา วปุ: สฺถาปิตํ ตจฺจ ทฺฤษฺฏฺวา
The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee had followed Joseph and had seen the tomb where Jesus' body had been laid.
56 วฺยาฆุฏฺย สุคนฺธิทฺรวฺยไตลานิ กฺฤตฺวา วิธิวทฺ วิศฺรามวาเร วิศฺรามํ จกฺรุ: ฯ
They returned home and prepared spices and ointments. But on the Sabbath they rested, observing the commandment.
