Mateus 22
1 Então Jesus voltou a lhes falar por parábolas, dizendo:
Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables.
2 O reino dos céus é semelhante a um rei que fez uma festa de casamento para o seu filho;
‘The kingdom of heaven,’ he said, ‘may be compared to a king who gave a banquet in honour of his son’s wedding.
3 e mandou a seus servos que chamassem os convidados para a festa de casamento, mas não quiseram vir.
He sent his servants to call those who had been invited to the banquet, but they were unwilling to come.
4 Outra vez ele mandou outros servos, dizendo: “Dizei aos convidados: ‘Eis que já preparei meu jantar: meus bois e animais cevados já foram mortos, e tudo está pronto. Vinde à festa de casamento’”.
A second time he sent some servants, with orders to say to those who had been invited “I have prepared my meal, my cattle and fat beasts are killed and everything is ready; come to the banquet.”
5 Porém eles não deram importância e foram embora, um ao seu campo, e outro ao seu comércio;
They, however, took no notice, but went off, one to their farm, another to their business;
6 e outros agarraram os servos dele, e os humilharam e os mataram.
while the rest, seizing his servants, ill-treated them and killed them.
7 O rei Então enviou os seus exércitos, destruiu aqueles homicidas, e incendiou a cidade deles.
The king, in anger, sent his troops, put those murderers to death, and set their city on fire.
8 Em seguida, disse aos seus servos: “Certamente a festa de casamento está pronta, porém os convidados não eram dignos.
Then he said to his servants “The banquet is prepared, but those who were invited were not worthy.
9 Ide, pois, às saídas dos caminhos, e convidai à festa de casamento tantos quantos achardes.
So go to the cross-roads, and invite everyone you find to the banquet.”
10 Aqueles servos saíram pelos caminhos, e ajuntaram todos quantos acharam, tanto maus como bons; e a sala da festa de casamento se encheu de convidados.
The servants went out into the roads and collected all the people whom they found, whether bad or good; and the bridal-hall was filled with guests.
11 Mas quando o rei entrou para ver os convidados, percebeu ali um homem que não estava vestido com roupa adequada para a festa de casamento.
But, when the king went in to see his guests, he noticed there a man who had not put on a wedding-robe.
12 Então lhe perguntou: “Amigo, como entraste aqui sem ter roupa para a festa?” E ele emudeceu.
So he said to him “My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding-robe?” The man was speechless.
13 Então o rei disse aos servos: “Amarrai-o nos pés e nas mãos, e lançai-o nas trevas de fora. Ali haverá pranto e o ranger de dentes”.
Then the king said to the attendants “Tie him hand and foot, and put him out into the darkness outside, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.”
14 Pois muitos são chamados, porém poucos escolhidos.
For many are called, but few chosen.’
15 Então os fariseus foram embora, e se reuniram para tramar como o apanhariam em cilada por algo que dissesse.
Then the Pharisees went away and conferred together as to how they might lay a trap for Jesus in the course of conversation.
16 Depois lhe enviaram seus discípulos, juntamente com os apoiadores de Herodes, e perguntaram: Mestre, bem sabemos que tu és verdadeiro, e que com verdade ensinas o caminho de Deus, e que não te importas com a opinião de ninguém, porque não dás atenção à aparência humana.
They sent their disciples, with the Herodians, to say to him, ‘Teacher, we know that you are an honest person, and that you teach the way of God honestly, and are not afraid of anyone; for you pay no regard to a person’s position.
17 Dize-nos, pois, o que te parece: é lícito dar tributo a César, ou não?
Tell us, then, what you think. Are we right in paying taxes to the Emperor, or not?’
18 Mas Jesus, entendendo a sua malícia, disse: Por que me tentais, hipócritas?
Perceiving their malice, Jesus answered, ‘Why are you testing me, you hypocrites?
19 Mostrai-me a moeda do tributo. E eles lhe trouxeram um denário.
Show me the coin with which the tax is paid.’ And, when they had brought him a coin,
20 E ele lhes perguntou: De quem é esta imagem, e a inscrição?
he asked, ‘Whose head and title are these?’
21 Eles responderam: De César. Então ele lhes disse: Dai, pois, a César o que é de César, e a Deus o que é de Deus.
‘The Emperor’s,’ they answered, at which he said to them, ‘Then pay to the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor, and to God what belongs to God.’
22 Quando ouviram isso, eles ficaram admirados; então o deixaram e se retiraram.
They wondered at his answer, and left him alone and went away.
23 Naquele mesmo dia chegaram a ele os saduceus, que dizem não haver ressurreição, e perguntaram-lhe,
That same day some Sadducees came up to Jesus, maintaining that there is no resurrection. Their question was this, –
24 dizendo: Mestre, Moisés disse: Se um homem morrer sem ter filhos, seu irmão se casará com sua mulher, e gerará descendência ao seu irmão.
‘Teacher, Moses said – “should a man die without children, the man’s brother will become the husband of the widow, and raise a family for his brother.”
25 Ora, havia entre nós sete irmãos. O primeiro se casou, e depois morreu; e sem ter tido filhos, deixou sua mulher ao seu irmão.
Now we had living among us seven brothers; of whom the eldest married and died, and, as he had no family, left his wife for his brother.
26 E da mesma maneira também foi com o segundo, o terceiro, até os sete.
The same thing happened to the second and the third brothers, and indeed to all the seven.
27 Por último, depois de todos, a mulher morreu.
The woman herself died last of all.
28 Assim, na ressurreição, a mulher será de qual dos sete? Pois todos a tiveram.
At the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be out of the seven, all of them having been married to her?’
29 Jesus, porém, lhes respondeu: Errais, por não conhecerdes as Escrituras, nem o poder de Deus.
‘Your mistake,’ replied Jesus, ‘is due to your ignorance of the scriptures, and of the power of God.
30 Porque na ressurreição, nem se tomam, nem se dão em casamento; mas são como os anjos no céu.
For at the resurrection there is no marrying or being married, but all who rise are as angels in heaven.
31 E sobre a ressurreição dos mortos, não lestes o que Deus vos falou:
As to the resurrection of the dead, have you not read these words of God –
32 Eu sou o Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Isaque, e o Deus de Jacó? Deus não é dos mortos, mas sim dos vivos!
“I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”? He is not the God of dead people, but of living.’
33 Quando as multidões ouviram [isto], ficaram admiradas de sua doutrina.
The crowds, who had been listening to him, were greatly struck with his teaching.
34 E os fariseus, ao ouvirem que ele havia feito os saduceus se calarem, reuniram-se.
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they collected together.
35 E um deles, especialista da Lei, tentando-o, perguntou-lhe:
Then one of them, a Student of the Law, to test him, asked this question –
36 Mestre, qual é o grande mandamento na Lei?
‘Teacher, what is the greatest commandment in the Law?’
37 E [Jesus] lhe respondeu: Amarás ao Senhor teu Deus com todo o teu coração, com toda a tua alma, e com todo o teu entendimento:
His answer was, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.
38 este é o grande e primeiro mandamento.
This is the great first commandment.
39 O segundo, semelhante a este, [é]: Amarás o teu próximo como a ti mesmo.
The second, which is like it, is this – You must love your neighbour as you love yourself.
40 Destes dois mandamentos dependem toda a Lei e os Profetas.
On these two commandments hang all the Law and the prophets.’
41 E, estando os fariseus reunidos, Jesus lhes perguntou,
Before the Pharisees separated, Jesus put this question to them –
42 dizendo: Que pensais vós acerca do Cristo? De quem ele é filho? Eles lhe responderam: De Davi.
‘What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?’ ‘David’s,’ they said.
43 [Jesus] lhes disse: Como, pois, Davi, em espírito, o chama Senhor, dizendo:
‘How is it, then,’ Jesus replied, ‘that David, speaking under inspiration, calls him “lord,” in the passage –
44 Disse o Senhor a meu Senhor: “Senta-te à minha direita, até que eu ponha os teus inimigos debaixo de teus pés”.
“The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies beneath your feet”?
45 Ora, se Davi o chama Senhor, como é seu filho?
Since, then, David calls him “lord,” how is he David’s son?’
46 E ninguém podia lhe responder palavra; nem ninguém ousou desde aquele dia a mais lhe perguntar.
No one could say a word in answer; nor did anyone after that day venture to question him further.
