Gálatas 3

1 Ó insensatos gálatas, quem vos iludiu? Diante dos vossos olhos Jesus Cristo foi retratado como crucificado!

Foolish Galatians! Who has been enchanting you – you before whose eyes Jesus Christ was depicted on the cross?

2 Só isto eu queria saber de vós: recebestes o Espírito pelas obras da Lei ou pela pregação da fé?

Here is the one thing that I want to find out from you – Did you receive the Spirit as the result of obedience to Law, or of your having listened with faith?

3 Sois vós tão insensatos que, depois de começardes no Espírito, agora terminareis na carne?

Can you be so foolish? After beginning with what is spiritual, do you now end with what is external?

4 Experimentastes tantas coisas em vão? Se é que foi mesmo em vão!

Did you go through so much to no purpose? – if indeed it really was to no purpose!

5 Ora, aquele que vos dá o Espírito e que opera maravilhas entre vós [faz isso] por causa das obras da Lei ou da pregação da fé?

He who supplies you abundantly with his Spirit and endows you with such powers – does he do this as the result of obedience to Law? Or as the result of your having listened with faith?

6 Assim como “Abraão creu em Deus, e foi lhe reputado como justiça”,

It is just as it was with Abraham – he had faith in God, and his faith was regarded by God as righteousness.

7 entendei, pois, que os que são da fé são filhos de Abraão.

You see, then, that those whose lives are based on faith are the sons of Abraham.

8 E a Escritura, prevendo que Deus justificaria os gentios pela fé, prenunciou o Evangelho a Abraão, [dizendo]: Todas nas nações serão abençoadas em ti.

And scripture, foreseeing that God would pronounce the Gentiles righteous as the result of faith, foretold the good news to Abraham in the words – “Through you all the Gentiles will be blessed.”

9 Portanto, os que são da fé são abençoados com o crente Abraão.

And, therefore, those whose lives are based on faith share the blessings bestowed on the faith of Abraham.

10 Pois todos os que são das obras da Lei estão sob maldição, porque está escrito: Maldito todo aquele que não permanecer em todas as coisas que estão escritas no livro da Lei, para fazê-las.

All who rely on obedience to Law are under a curse, for scripture says – “Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all that is written in the book of the Law, and do it.”

11 E é evidente que pela Lei ninguém será justificado, porque: O justo viverá pela fé.

Again, it is evident that no one is pronounced righteous before God through Law, for we read – “Through faith the righteous will find life.”

12 A Lei não provém da fé; porém: Quem fizer estas coisas por elas viverá.

But the Law is not based on faith; no, its words are – “Those who practice these precepts will find life through them.”

13 Cristo nos resgatou da maldição da Lei ao se fazer maldição para o nosso benefício (pois está escrito: Maldito todo aquele que for pendurado em um madeiro.)

Christ ransomed us from the curse pronounced in the Law, by taking the curse on himself for us, for scripture says – “Cursed is anyone who is hanged on a tree.”

14 com a finalidade de que a bênção de Abraão chegasse aos gentios em Jesus Cristo, para que recebêssemos a promessa do Espírito por meio da fé.

And this he did that the blessing given to Abraham might be extended to the Gentiles through their union with Jesus Christ; that so, through our faith, we also might receive the promised gift of the Spirit.

15 Irmãos, estou falando em termos humanos: ainda que seja o pacto de uma pessoa, depois de confirmado, ninguém o anula, nem lhe acrescenta.

To take an illustration, friends, from daily life – No one sets aside even an agreement between two people, when once it has been confirmed, nor do they add conditions to it.

16 Ora, as promessas foram ditas a Abraão e à sua descendência. E não diz: “E às descendências” como que [falando] de muitos, mas sim como a um: “E à tua descendência”, que é Cristo.

Now it was to Abraham that the promises were made, “and to his offspring.” It was not said “to his offsprings,” as if many persons were meant, but the words were “to your offspring,” showing that one person was meant – and that was Christ.

17 Mas digo isto: o pacto foi confirmado anteriormente por Deus; e a Lei que veio quatrocentos e trinta anos depois não o invalida de maneira que anule a promessa.

My point is this – An agreement already confirmed by God cannot be canceled by the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, so as to cause the promise to be set aside.

18 Pois, se a herança é pela Lei, já não é pela promessa; mas foi por meio da promessa que Deus a concedeu gratuitamente a Abraão.

If our heritage is the result of Law, then it has ceased to be the result of a promise. Yet God conferred it on Abraham by a promise.

19 Para que, pois, é a Lei? Ela foi ordenada por causa das transgressões, até que chegasse o descendente a quem a promessa havia sido feita; e foi posta pelos anjos na mão de um mediador.

What, then, you ask, was the use of the Law? It was a later addition, to make people conscious of their wrongdoings, and intended to last only until the coming of that offspring to whom the promise had been made; and it was delivered through angels by a mediator.

20 Ora, o mediador não é de um só, mas Deus é um.

Now mediation implies more than one person, but God is one only.

21 Acaso, pois, a Lei é contra as promessas de Deus? De maneira nenhuma! Pois, se a Lei houvesse sido entregue para que pudesse dar vida, na verdade a justiça teria sido pela Lei.

Does that set the Law in opposition to God’s promises? Heaven forbid! For, if a Law had been given capable of bestowing life, then righteousness would have actually owed its existence to Law.

22 Mas a Escritura prendeu tudo debaixo do pecado a fim de que a promessa fosse dada aos crentes por meio da fé em Jesus Cristo.

But the words of scripture represent the whole world as being in bondage to sin, so that the promised blessing, dependent, as it is, on faith in Jesus Christ, may be given to those who have faith in him.

23 Porém, antes que a fé viesse, estávamos vigiados sob a Lei, e presos, até que a fé fosse revelada.

Before the coming of faith, we were kept under the guard of the Law, in bondage, awaiting the faith that was destined to be revealed.

24 Dessa maneira, a Lei foi nosso tutor em condução a Cristo, para que pela fé fossemos justificados.

Thus the Law has proved a guide to lead us to Christ, in order that we may be pronounced righteous as the result of faith.

25 Mas depois que a fé chegou, já não estamos mais sob um tutor,

But now that faith has come we no longer need a guide.

26 pois todos vós sois filhos de Deus por meio da fé em Cristo Jesus;

For you are all sons of God, through your faith in Christ Jesus.

27 pois todos vós que fostes batizados em Cristo já vos revestistes de Cristo.

For all of you who were baptized into union with Christ clothed yourselves with Christ.

28 Assim, não há judeu nem grego; não há servo nem livre; não há macho nem fêmea. Pois todos vós sois um em Cristo Jesus.

All distinctions between Jew and Greek, slave and free, male and female, have vanished; for in union with Christ Jesus you are all one.

29 E, se vós sois de Cristo, então sois descendência de Abraão, e herdeiros conforme a promessa.

And, since you belong to Christ, it follows that you are Abraham’s offspring and, under the promise, sharers in the inheritance.
