Eclesiastes 1
1 Palavras do Pregador, filho de Davi, rei em Jerusalém.
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king of Israel in Jerusalem.
2 Futilidade das futilidades! - diz o Pregador - futilidade das futilidades! Tudo é fútil!
Vanity of vanities, said the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
3 Que proveito tem o homem de todo o seu trabalho que ele trabalha abaixo do sol?
What advantage [is there] to a man in all his labor that he takes under the sun?
4 Geração vai, e geração vem; porém a terra permanece para sempre.
A generation goes, and a generation comes: but the earth stands for ever.
5 O sol nasce, e o sol se põe; e se apressa ao seu lugar onde nasceu.
And the sun arises, and the sun goes down and draws toward its place;
6 O vento vai ao sul, e rodeia para o norte; continuamente o vento vai rodeando e voltando aos lugares onde circulou.
arising there it proceeds southward, and goes round toward the north. The wind goes round and round, and the wind returns to its circuits.
7 Todos os rios vão para o mar, e contudo o mar não se enche; ao lugar onde os ribeiros correm, para ali eles voltam a correr.
All the rivers run into the sea; and yet the sea is not filled: to the place whence the rivers come, there they return again.
8 Todas [estas] coisas são [tão] cansativas, que ninguém consegue descrever; os olhos não ficam satisfeitos de ver, nem os ouvidos se enchem de ouvir.
All things are full of labor; a man will not be able to speak [of them]: neither shall the eye be satisfied with seeing, neither shall the ear be filled with hearing.
9 O que foi, isso será; e o que se fez, isso será feito; de modo que nada há de novo abaixo do sol.
What is that which has been? the very thing which shall be: and what is that which has been done? the very thing which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
10 Existe algo que se possa dizer: Vê isto, que é novo? Isso já existia nos tempos passados, que foram antes de nós.
[Who is he] that shall speak and say, Behold, this is new? it has already been in the ages that have passed before us.
11 Não há lembrança das coisas que já aconteceram; e das coisas que vão acontecer, também delas não haverá lembrança entre aqueles que vierem depois.
There is no memorial to the first things; neither to the things that have been last shall their memorial be with them that shall at the last [time].
12 Eu o Pregador, me tornei rei sobre Israel em Jerusalém.
I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13 E dei meu coração a investigar e pesquisar com sabedoria sobre tudo o que acontece abaixo do céu; esta cansativa ocupação Deus deu aos filhos dos homens, para que nela fossem forçados.
And I applied my heart to seek out and examine by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven, for God has given to the sons of men an evil trouble to be troubled therewith.
14 Vi todas as obras que são feitas abaixo do sol, e eis que tudo é futilidade e aflição de espírito.
I saw all the works that were wrought under the sun; and, saw, all were vanity and waywardness of spirit.
15 O que é torto não pode ser endireitado; o que está em falta não pode ser contado.
That which is crooked can’t be made straight: and deficiency can’t be numbered.
16 Eu falei ao meu coração, dizendo: Eis que eu me tornei grande, e aumentei em sabedoria, sobre todos os que tinham sido antes de mim em Jerusalém; e meu coração experimentou uma abundância de sabedoria e conhecimento.
I spoke in my heart, saying, Behold, I am increased, and have acquired wisdom beyond all who were before me in Jerusalem: also I applied my heart to know wisdom and knowledge.
17 E dei meu coração para entender sabedoria, e para entender loucuras e tolices; e percebi que também isto era aflição.
And my heart knew much—wisdom, and knowledge, parables and understanding: I perceived that this also is waywardness of spirit.
18 Porque na muita sabedoria há muito aborrecimento, e aquele que aumenta em conhecimento aumenta em angústia.
For in the abundance of wisdom is abundance of knowledge; and he that increases knowledge will increase sorrow.
