Atos 27
1 E quando foi determinado que tínhamos que navegar para a Itália, entregaram a Paulo e alguns outros prisioneiros, a um centurião, por nome Júlio, do esquadrão imperial.
As it was decided that we were to sail to Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were put in charge of a centurion of the Augustan Guard, named Julius.
2 E embarcando [-nos] em um navio adramitino, estando a navegar pelos lugares [costeiros] da Ásia, nós partimos, estando conosco Aristarco, o macedônio de Tessalônica.
We went on board a ship from Adramyttium, which was on the point of sailing to the ports along the coast of Roman Asia, and put to sea. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, went with us.
3 E no [dia] seguinte, chegamos a Sidom; e Júlio, tratando bem a Paulo, permitiu [-lhe] que fosse aos amigos, para [receber] cuidado [deles].
The next day we put in to Sidon, where Julius treated Paul in a friendly manner, and allowed him to go to see his friends and receive their hospitality.
4 E tendo partido dali, nós fomos navegando abaixo do Chipre, porque os ventos estavam contrários.
Putting to sea again, we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the wind was against us;
5 E tendo passado ao longo do mar da Cilícia e Panfília, viemos a Mira em Lícia.
and, after crossing the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we reached Myra in Lycia.
6 E o centurião, tendo achado ali um navio de Alexandria, que estava navegando para a Itália, nos fez embarcar nele.
There the Roman officer found an Alexandrian ship on her way to Italy, and put us on board of her.
7 E indo navegando lentamente já por muitos dias, chegando com dificuldade em frente a Cnido, o vento, não nos permitindo [continuar por ali], navegamos abaixo de Creta, em frente a Salmone.
For several days our progress was slow, and it was only with difficulty that we arrived off Cnidus. As the wind was still unfavourable when we came off Cape Salmone, we sailed under the lee of Crete,
8 E tendo com dificuldade percorrido sua costa, chegamos a um certo lugar, chamado Bons Portos, perto do qual estava a cidade de Laseia.
and with difficulty, by keeping close in shore, we reached a place called “Fair Havens,” near which was the town of Lasea.
9 E tendo passado muito tempo, e sendo a navegação já perigosa, porque também já tinha passado o jejum, Paulo [os] exortava,
This had taken a considerable time, and sailing was already dangerous, for the Fast was already over; and so Paul gave this warning.
10 Dizendo-lhes: Homens, eu vejo que a navegação vai ser com violência e muito dano, não somente de carga e do navio, mas também de nossas vidas.
‘My friends,’ he said, ‘I see that this voyage will be attended with injury and much damage, not only to the cargo and the ship, but to our own lives also.’
11 Porém o centurião cria mais no capitão e no dono do navio do que no que Paulo dizia.
The Roman officer, however, was more influenced by the captain and the owner than by what was said by Paul.
12 E não sendo aquele porto adequado para passar o inverno, a maioria preferiu partir dali, para ver se podiam chegar a Fênix, que é um porto de Creta, voltada para o lado do vento sudoeste e noroeste, para ali passarem o inverno.
And, as the harbour was not a suitable one to winter in, the majority were in favour of continuing the voyage, in hope of being able to reach Phoenix, and winter there. Phoenix was a Cretan harbour, open to the north-east and south-east.
13 E ao ventar brandamente ao sul, pareceu-lhes que eles já tinham o que queriam; e levantando a vela, foram por perto da costa de Creta.
So, when a light wind sprang up from the south, thinking that they had found their opportunity, they weighed anchor and kept along the coast of Crete, close in shore.
14 Mas não muito depois houve contra ela um vento violento, chamado Euroaquilão.
But shortly afterwards a hurricane came down on us off the land – a north-easter, as it is called.
15 E tendo o navio sido tomado por ele, e não podendo navegar contra o vento, nós deixamos sermos levados [por ele].
The ship was caught by it and was unable to keep her head to the wind, so we had to give way and let her drive before it.
16 E correndo abaixo de uma pequena ilha, chamada Clauda, com dificuldade conseguimos manter o barquinho de reserva;
Running under the lee of a small island called Cauda, we only just managed to secure the ship’s boat,
17 O qual, tendo sido levado para cima, usaram de suportes [para] reforçarem o navio; e temendo irem de encontro aos bancos de areia, eles baixaram as velas e [deixaram] ir à deriva.
and, after hoisting it on board, the men frapped the ship. But, afraid of being driven on to the Syrtis Sands, they lowered the yard, and then drifted.
18 E sendo muito afligidos pela tempestade, no [dia] seguinte jogaram a carga para fora [do navio].
So violently were we tossed about by the storm, that the next day they began throwing the cargo overboard,
19 E no terceiro [dia], com as nossas próprias mãos jogamos fora os instrumentos do navio.
and, on the following day, threw out the ship’s tackle with their own hands.
20 E não aparecendo ainda o sol, nem estrelas havia muitos dias, e sendo afligidos por não pouca tempestade, desde então tínhamos perdido toda a esperança de sermos salvos.
As neither sun nor stars were visible for several days, and, as the gale still continued severe, all hope of our being saved was at last abandoned.
21 E havendo muito [tempo] que não havia o que comer, então Paulo, ficando de pé no meio deles, disse: Homens, vós devíeis ter dado atenção a mim, e não terdes partido de Creta, e [assim] evitar esta situação ruim e prejuízo.
It was then, when they had gone a long time without food, that Paul came forward, and said, ‘My friends, you should have listened to me, and not have sailed from Crete and so incurred this injury and damage.
22 Mas agora eu vos exorto a terdes bom ânimo; porque haverá nenhuma perda de vida de vós, além [somente da perda] do navio.
Yet, even as things are, I beg you not to lose courage, for there will not be a single life lost among you – only the ship.
23 Porque esta mesma noite esteve comigo um anjo de Deus, a quem eu pertenço e a quem eu sirvo;
For last night an angel of the God to whom I belong, and whom I serve, stood by me, and said –
24 Dizendo: Não temas, Paulo; é necessário que tu sejas apresentado a César; e eis que Deus tem te dado [a vida] a todos quantos navegam contigo.
“Have no fear, Paul; you must appear before the Emperor, and God himself has given you the lives of all your fellow voyagers.”
25 Portanto, homens, tende bom ânimo; porque eu creio em Deus que assim será, conforme o que me foi dito.
Therefore, courage, my friends! For I believe God, that everything will happen exactly as I have been told.
26 Mas é necessário que sejamos lançados a uma ilha.
We will, however, have to be driven on some island.’
27 E quando veio a décima quarta noite, sendo lançados de um lado para o outro no [mar] Adriático, por volta da meia noite os marinheiros suspeitaram de que estavam se aproximando de alguma terra [firme].
It was now the fourteenth night of the storm, and we were drifting about in the Adriatic Sea, when, about midnight, the sailors began to suspect that they were drawing near land.
28 E tendo lançado o prumo, acharam vinte braças; e passando um pouco mais adiante, voltando a lançar o prumo, acharam quinze braças.
So they took soundings, and found twenty fathoms of water. After waiting a little, they took soundings again, and found fifteen fathoms.
29 E temendo de irem de encontro a lugares rochosos, lançaram da popa quatro âncoras, desejando que o dia viesse [logo].
Then, as they were afraid of our being driven on some rocky coast, they let go four anchors from the stern, and longed for daylight.
30 E [quando] os marinheiros estavam procurando fugir do navio, e baixando o barquinho de reserva ao mar, como que queriam largar as âncoras da proa,
The sailors wanted to leave the ship, and had lowered the boat, on pretence of running out anchors from the bows,
31 Paulo disse ao centurião e aos soldados: Se estes não ficarem no navio, vós não podeis vos salvar.
when Paul said to the Roman officer and his men, ‘Unless the sailors remain on board, you cannot be saved.’
32 Então os soldados cortaram os cabos do barquinho de reserva, e o deixaram cair.
So the soldiers cut the ropes which held the boat, and let her drift away.
33 E até enquanto o dia estava vindo, Paulo exortava a todos que comessem alguma coisa, dizendo: Hoje já é o décimo quarto dia, em que estais esperando, continuando sem comer, nada tendo experimentado.
In the interval before daybreak Paul kept urging them all to take something to eat. ‘It is a fortnight today,’ he said, ‘that, owing to your anxiety, you have gone without food, taking nothing.
34 Portanto eu vos exorto para que comais alguma coisa, pois é bom para vossa saúde; porque nenhum cabelo cairá de vossa cabeça.
So I beg you to take something to eat; your safety depends on it, for not one of you will lose even a hair of his head.’
35 E tendo dito isto, e tomando o pão, ele agradeceu a Deus na presença de todos; e partindo [-o], começou a comer.
With these words he took some bread, and, after saying the thanksgiving to God before them all, broke it in pieces, and began to eat;
36 E todos, tendo ficado mais encorajados, também pegaram [algo] para comer.
and the men all felt cheered and had something to eat themselves.
37 E éramos todos no navio duzentas e setenta e seis almas.
There were about seventy-six of us on board, all told.
38 E estando saciados de comer, eles tiraram peso do navio, lançando o trigo ao mar.
After satisfying their hunger, they further lightened the ship by throwing the grain into the sea.
39 E tendo vindo o dia, não reconheciam a terra; mas enxergaram uma enseada que tinha praia, na qual planejaram, se pudessem, levar o navio.
When daylight came, they could not make out what land it was, but, observing a creek in which there was a beach, they consulted as to whether they could run the ship safely into it.
40 E tendo levantado as âncoras, deixaram [-no] ir ao mar, soltando também as amarras dos lemes, e levantando a vela maior ao vento, foram de levando [-o] à praia.
Then they cast off, and abandoned the anchors, and at the same time unlashed the gear of the steering oars, hoisted the foresail to the wind, and made for the beach.
41 Mas tendo caído em um lugar onde dois mares se encontram, encalharam ali o navio; e fixa a proa, ficou imóvel, mas a popa estava se destruindo com a força das ondas.
They got, however, into a kind of channel, and there ran the ship aground. The bows stuck fast and could not be moved, while the stern began breaking up under the strain.
42 Então o conselho dos soldados foi de que matassem aos presos, para que nenhum [deles] fugisse a nado.
The advice of the soldiers was that the prisoners should be killed, so that none of them could swim away and make their escape.
43 Mas o centurião, querendo salvar a Paulo, impediu a intenção deles; e mandou que aqueles que pudessem nadar fossem os primeiros a se lançassem [ao mar] e chegassem à terra [firme].
But the Roman officer, anxious to save Paul, prevented their carrying out their intention, and ordered that those who could swim should be the first to jump into the sea and try to reach the shore;
44 E [depois] os demais, uns em tábuas, e outros em pedaços do navio. E assim aconteceu, que todos se salvaram em terra.
and that the rest should follow, some on planks, and others on different pieces of the ship. In these various ways everyone managed to get safely ashore.
