Ester 8

1 Naquele mesmo dia deu o rei Assuero à rainha Esther a casa de Haman, inimigo dos judeus: e mardoqueu veio perante o rei; porque Esther tinha declarado o que lhe era.

At that time King Ahasuerus gave the property of Haman the Jews’ enemy to Queen Esther. Mordecai was made one of the king’s personal advisers, for Esther had disclosed his relationship to her.

2 E tirou o rei o seu anel, que tinha tomado a Haman, e o deu a mardoqueu. E Esther ordenou a mardoqueu sobre a casa de Haman.

The king also drew off his signet ring, which he had taken from Haman. He gave it to Mordecai, and Esther placed Mordecai in charge of Haman’s property.

3 Falou mais Esther perante o rei, e se lhe lançou aos pés: e chorou, e lhe suplicou que revogasse a maldade de Haman, o agagita, e o seu intento que tinha intentado contra os judeus.

Then Esther sought another audience with the king and fell at his feet and with tears begged him to avert the evil planned by Haman the Agagite and to frustrate his designs against the Jews.

4 E estendeu o rei para Esther o cetro de ouro. Então Esther se levantou, e se pôs em pé perante o rei,

The king held out to her the golden sceptre, and she arose and stood before him.

5 E disse: Se bem parecer ao rei, e se eu achei graça perante ele, e se este negócio é reto diante do rei, e se eu lhe agrado aos seus olhos, escreva-se que se revoguem as cartas e o intento de Haman filho de Hammedatha, o agagita, as quais ele escreveu para lançar a perder os judeus, que há em todas as províncias do rei.

‘If it seems best to the king,’ she said, ‘and if I have won his favour and he thinks it right, and if I please him, let written orders be given to revoke the dispatches devised by Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote ordering the destruction of the Jews who are in all the king’s provinces.

6 Porque como poderei ver o mal que sobrevirá ao meu povo? e como poderei ver a perdição da minha geração?

For how can I bear to look upon the evil that will come to my people? How can I bear to see their destruction?’

7 Então disse o rei Assuero à rainha Esther e ao judeu mardoqueu: eis que dei a Esther a casa de Haman, e a ele enforcaram numa forca, porquanto quizera pôr as mãos nos judeus.

Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, ‘See, I have given Esther the property of Haman, and they have hanged him on the gallows, because he laid hands upon the Jews.

8 Escrevei pois aos judeus, como parecer bem aos vossos olhos, em nome do rei, e selai-o com o anel do rei; porque a escritura que se escreve em nome do rei, e se sela com o anel do rei, não é para revogar.

Now you write on behalf of the Jews, as seems best to you, in the king’s name and seal it with the king’s signet ring. For a document that is written in the king’s name and sealed with the king’s signet ring cannot be revoked.’

9 Então foram chamados os escrivães do rei, naquele mesmo tempo, e no mês terceiro (que é o mês de sivan), aos vinte e três do mesmo, e se escreveu conforme a tudo quanto ordenou mardoqueu aos judeus, como também aos sátrapas, e aos governadores, e aos maiorais das províncias, que se estendem da Índia até Ethiopia, cento e vinte e sete províncias, a cada província segundo a sua escritura, e a cada povo conforme a sua língua: como também aos judeus segundo a sua escritura, e conforme a sua língua.

On the twenty-third day of the third month (that is the month of Sivan), the king’s secretaries were summoned and as Mordecai instructed an edict was issued to the Jews, to the satraps and provincial governors and the rulers of each of the one hundred twenty-seven provinces from India to Ethiopia in their own script and their own language, and to the Jews in their own script and language.

10 E se escreveu em nome do rei Assuero, e se selou com o anel do rei: e se enviaram as cartas pela mão de correios a cavalo, e que cavalgavam sobre ginetes, e sobre mulas e filhos de éguas.

Mordecai wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus. He sealed it with the king’s signet ring. Dispatches were sent by mounted couriers who rode the swift, noble steeds, bred of the royal studs.

11 Que o rei concedia aos judeus, que havia em cada cidade, que se ajuntassem, e se dispuzessem para defenderem as suas vidas: para destruírem, matarem e assolarem a todas as forças do povo e província que com eles apertassem, crianças e mulheres, e que se saqueassem os seus despojos,

In this way the king permitted the Jews who were in every city to gather together and make a stand for their life, to destroy, to kill, and annihilate all the armed forces of any people or province that might be hostile to them, including their children and women, and to take their goods as plunder

12 Num mesmo dia, em todas as províncias do rei Assuero, no dia treze do duodécimo mes, que é o mês de Adar.

throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus on that thirteenth day of the twelfth month (which is called Adar).

13 E a copia da carta foi que uma ordem se anunciaria em todas as províncias, publicamente a todos os povos, para que os judeus estivessem preparados para aquele dia, para se vingarem dos seus inimigos.

A copy of the edict was to be published as a decree in every province – publicly displayed so that the Jews might be ready for that day and avenge themselves.

14 Os correios sobre ginetes e mulas apressuradamente sairam, impelidos pela palavra do rei: e foi publicada esta ordem na fortaleza de Susan.

So the couriers who rode the swift, noble steeds went out, hastened and impelled by the king’s commands! Meantime the decree had been given out in the royal palace at Susa;

15 Então mardoqueu saiu da presença do rei com um vestido real azul celeste e branco, como também com uma grande coroa de ouro, e com uma capa de linho fino e púrpura, e a cidade de Susan jubilou e se alegrou.

and Mordecai had gone out from the presence of the king in royal garments of violet and white and with a great crown of gold and with a robe of fine linen and purple. The people of Susa shouted and were glad.

16 E para os judeus houve luz, e alegria, e gozo, e honra.

To the Jews there came light and gladness and joy and honour.

17 Também em toda a província, e em toda a cidade, aonde chegava a palavra do rei e a sua ordem, havia entre os judeus alegria, e gozo, convites e dias de folguedo: e muitos dos povos da terra se fizeram judeus; porque o temor dos judeus tinha caído sobre eles.

And in every province and city, wherever the king’s command and decree came, there was gladness and joy among the Jews and a holiday. Many of the peoples of the earth professed to be Jews, for fear of the Jews took possession of them.
