Ester 1
1 E sucedeu nos dias de Assuero (este é aquele Assuero que reinou desde a Índia até Ethiopia, sobre cento e vinte e sete províncias):
And it came to pass after these things in the days of Artaxerxes, —(this Artaxerxes ruled over a hundred and twenty-seven provinces from India)—
2 Naqueles dias, assentando-se o rei Assuero sobre o trono do seu reino, que está na fortaleza de Susan,
in those days, when king Artaxerxes was on the throne in the city of Susa,
3 No terceiro ano do seu reinado, fez um convite a todos os seus príncipes e seus servos (o poder da Pérsia e Media e os maiores senhores das províncias estavam perante ele),
in the third year of his reign, he made a feast to his friends, and the other nations, and to the nobles of the Persians and Medes, and the chief of the satraps.
4 Para mostrar as riquezas da glória do seu reino, e o esplendor da sua excelente grandeza, por muitos dias, a saber: cento e oitenta dias.
And after this, after he had shewn to them the wealth of his kingdom, and the abundant glory of his wealth during a hundred and eighty days,
5 E, acabados aqueles dias, fez o rei um convite a todo o povo que se achou na fortaleza de Susan, desde o maior até ao menor, por sete dias, no pátio do jardim do palácio real.
when, [I say], the days of the marriage feast were completed, the king made a banquet to the nations who were present in the city six days, in the court of the king’s house,
6 As tapeçarias eram de branco, verde, e azul celeste, pendentes de cordões de linho fino e púrpura, e argolas de prata, e colunas de mármore: os leitos de ouro e de prata, sobre um pavimento de porphyro, e de mármore, e de alabastro, e de pedras preciosas.
[which was] adorned with [hangings] of fine linen and flax on cords of fine linen and purple, fastened to golden and silver studs, on pillars of Parian marble and stone: [there were] golden and silver couches on a pavement of emerald stone, and of pearl, and of Parian stone, and open-worked coverings variously flowered, [having] roses worked round about;
7 E dava-se de beber em vasos de ouro, e os vasos eram diferentes uns dos outros; e havia muito vinho real, segundo o estado do rei.
gold and silver cups, and a small cup of carbuncle set out of the value of thirty thousand talents, abundant and sweet wine, which the king himself drank.
8 E o beber era por lei, que ninguém forçasse a outro: porque assim o tinha ordenado o rei expressamente a todos os grandes da sua casa, que fizessem conforme à vontade de cada um.
And this banquet was not according to the appointed law; but so the king would have it: and he charged the stewards to perform his will and that of the company.
9 Também a rainha Vasthi fez um convite às mulheres, na casa real, que tinha o rei Assuero.
Also Astin the queen made a banquet for the women in the palace where king Artaxerxes [dwelt].
10 E ao sétimo dia, estando já o coração do rei alegre do vinho, mandou a Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, e Abagtha, Zethar, e a Carchas, os sete eunucos que serviam na presença do rei Assuero,
Now on the seventh day the king, being merry, told Aman, and Bazan, and Tharrha, and Barazi, and Zatholtha, and Abataza, and Tharaba, the seven chamberlains, servants of king Artaxerxes,
11 Que introduzissem na presença do rei a rainha Vasthi, com a coroa real, para mostrar aos povos e aos príncipes a sua formosura, porque era formosa à vista.
to bring in the queen to him, to enthrone her, and crown her with the diadem, and to shew her to the princes, and her beauty to the nations: for she was beautiful.
12 Porém a rainha Vasthi recusou vir conforme à palavra do rei, pela mão dos eunucos; pelo que o rei muito se enfureceu, e ardeu nele a sua ira.
But queen Astin hearkened not to him to come with the chamberlains: so the king was grieved and angered.
13 Então disse o rei aos sábios que entendiam dos tempos (porque assim se tratavam os negócios do rei na presença de todos os que sabiam a lei e o direito;
And he said to his friends, Thus has Astin spoken: pronounce therefore upon this [case] law and judgment.
14 E os mais chegados a ele eram: Carsena, Sethar, Admatha, Tarsis, Meres, Marsena, Memuchan, os sete príncipes dos persas e dos medos, que viam a face do rei, e se assentavam os primeiros no reino)
So Arkesæus, and Sarsathæus, and Malisear, the princes of the Persians and Medes, who were near the king, who sat chief [in rank] by the king, drew near to him,
15 Que, segundo a lei, se devia fazer da rainha Vasthi, por não haver feito o mandado do rei Assuero, pela mão dos eunucos?
and reported to him according to the laws how it was proper to do to queen Astin, because she had not done the things commanded of the king by the chamberlains.
16 Então disse Memuchan na presença do rei e dos príncipes: Não somente pecou contra o rei a rainha Vasthi, porém também contra todos os príncipes, e contra todos os povos que há em todas as províncias do rei Assuero.
And Muchæus said to the king and to the princes, Queen Astin has not wronged the king only, but also all the king’s rulers and princes:
17 Porque a notícia deste feito da rainha sairá a todas as mulheres, de modo que desprezarão a seus maridos aos seus olhos quando se disser: Mandou o rei Assuero que introduzissem à sua presença a rainha Vasthi, porém ela não veio.
for he has told them the words of the queen, and how she disobeyed the king. As then, [said he], she refused [to obey] king Artaxerxes,
18 E neste mesmo dia as princezas da Pérsia e da Media dirão o mesmo a todos os príncipes do rei, ouvindo o feito da rainha: e assim haverá assaz desprezo e indignação.
so this day shall the other ladies of the chiefs of the Persians and Medes, having heard what she said to the king, dare in the same way to dishonour their husbands.
19 Se bem parecer ao rei, saia da sua parte um edito real, e escreva-se nas leis dos persas e dos medos, e não se quebrante, a saber: que Vasthi não entre mais na presença do rei Assuero, e o rei dê o reino dela à sua companheira que seja melhor do que ela
If then it seem good to the king, let him make a royal decree, and let it be written according to the laws of the Medes and Persians, and let him not alter [it]: and let not the queen come in to him any more; and let the king give her royalty to a woman better than she.
20 E, ouvindo-se o mandado, que o rei mandar em todo o seu reino (ainda que é grande), todas as mulheres darão honra a seus maridos, desde a maior até à menor.
And let the law of the king which he shall have made, be widely proclaimed, in his kingdom: and so shall all the women give honour to their husbands, from the poor even to the rich.
21 E pareceram bem estas palavras aos olhos do rei e dos príncipes: e fez o rei conforme à palavra de Memuchan.
And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did as Muchæus had said,
22 Então enviou cartas a todas as províncias do rei, a cada província segundo a sua escritura, e a cada povo segundo a sua língua: que cada homem fosse senhor em sua casa, e que se publicasse conforme à língua do seu povo.
and sent into all his kingdom through the several provinces, according to their language, in order that men might be feared in their own houses.
